MSNBC and Keith Olbermann parted ways on Friday as Olbermann signed off as host of his nightly Countdown show for the last time on live TV.  What at first seemed like sudden news, NYT reports Olbermann and MSNBC have been in negotiations for weeks to end their relationship.  The deal was completed on Friday which prompted Olbermann to make his final good-bye to viewers on Friday’s show.  Apparently, MSNBC and Olbermann have a separation agreement in place which includes restrictions on when Olbermann can next host another television show for another network and when he can grant interviews about the decision to sever his relationship with MSNBC.  The deal though puts no limitations on Olbermann if he wanted to move to radio or to an online format.  According to sources, Olbermann’s deal is not unlike the one Conan O’Brien had a year ago with NBC when he left The Tonight Show.

Beginning tonight, MSNBC is moving The Last Word with Lawrence O’Donnell forward to the former Countdown spot at 8p and The Ed Show will move to the 10p time period.  The Rachel Maddow show will continue to air live at 9p.  In addition, Cenk Uygur, contributor and host of the web show The Young Turks will fill in as host for the 6p hour vacated by The Ed Show.

TLC is renewing Cake Boss: Next Great Baker hosted by Buddy Valastro for a second season set to premiere later this year.  The first season 90-minute finale airs tonight at 9p followed by a new season launch of 19 Kids and Counting at 1030p. Cake Boss: Next Great Baker is from High Noon Entertainment.

WFN: World Fishing Network is launching new seasons of ten fishing shows this month and next:

  • Lost Lake – WFN Original series with 10 episodes opens January 31 at 9p; airs Mondays at 9p
  • Getting School’d with JP DeRose – WFN Original series with 13 episodes premieres February 2 at 730p; airs Wednesdays at 730p

NBC is moving forward with the Wonder Woman pilot from David E. Kelley.  The project had been brought to NBC once before though the network had passed on it at that time.  Late last week, NBC also picked up a musical series about the making of a Broadway play from Steven Spielberg called Smash.  The project has Craig Zadan and Neil Meron (Chicago, Hairspray) on board along with Marc Shaiman and Scott Wittman to write original songs for the series; Theresa Rebeck would write the script with Spielberg as executive producer.  NBC also nodded approval for a half-hour romantic comedy pilot titled I Hate That I Love You from Jhoni Marchenko (Will & Grace). The plot is about a straight couple who introduce two lesbian friends to one another which results in instant attraction and a pregnancy.  And, NBC handed a pilot order to an hour-long drama Mann’s World from Michael Patrick King (Sex and the City) about a celebrity hair stylist living in L.A.

At CBS, the network ordered a cop drama pilot stemming from collaboration between Robert DeNiro and crime writer Richard Price about six NYC rookie cops who are learning the job while trying to lead normal lives.  Tribeca Productions will produce the projected titled Rookies with DeNiro and his partner Jane Rosenthal as executive producers.  CBS Television Studios is producing.

FOX okayed the pilot Exit Strategy starring Ethan Hawke and written by David Guggenhein with Alex Kurtzman and Roberto Orci producing via 20th Television.   Hawke will portray Eric Shaw in the action drama about a CIA extraction team.
