In Unchained Reaction, a new six-episode series for Discovery Channel, Adam Savage and Jamie Hyneman of Mythbusters will executive produce and serve as judges.  The series will follow two diverse teams as they compete while building an elaborate chain reaction contraption.  Unchained Reaction, produced by Discovery Studios and BermanBraun will premiere on Discovery Channel in March. 

Season three of Treme will premiere on HBO later this year.  The series had not been included in HBO’s spring scheduling plans.  Treme’s second season debuted to 605,000 viewers.

Upfront 2012 Update: Vme has set May 16 at 3p for its Upfront in New York where the network will highlight its content targeting the Hispanic family from adults, women, men, youth and kids.  Hispanic television network, Estrella TV will hold its Upfront at Gotham Hall in New York on May 17 at 12p.

NATPE 2012:

FremantleMedia Enterprises (FME) made several deals across Latin America just prior to NATPE.  A sampling of the deals include:

  • Season 11 of American Idol will be available pan-regionally through a deal with Sony Pictures Entertainment Networks Latin America and to terrestrial outlets in Suriname and Trinidad and Tobago.  Sony will also air season six of America’s Got Talent; season four of Celebrity Apprentice; and season four of Live From Abbey Road.
  • The tween horror/comedy series My Babysitter’s A Vampire, with season one and two from FME’s Kids & Family Entertainment unit sold to Televisa in Mexico and Canal 13 in Chile.
  • Netflix picked up seasons one and two of the BBC series Merlin and the drama Satisfaction.
  • Ocean Mysteries and the special March of the Dinosaurs was acquired by Mexico’s Once TV.
  • Lifestyle series Baking Made Easy was sold to Fox Life in Latin America.
  • Globosat in Brazil picked up three shows from chef Jamie Oliver including Jamie’s Great Britain, Jamie Cooks Summer and Jamie’s Dream School.
  • Season eight and nine of Project Runway will air pan-regionally on Turner (Glitz).  Turner Broadcasting also acquired the Spike TV titles Auction Hunters in season two; 1000 Ways To Die in season five; and Deadliest Warriors in season three in additional to Work of Art in season two; Wild Justice: California in season two; and Web Therapy.
  • 1000 Ways To Die in season one and two was picked up by UCTV in Chile along with the British classic comedy Benny Hill.

Entertainment One is bringing the anthology series Femme Fatales to NATPE.  The series reveals stories of ruthless and powerful women.

Docu-series I Almost Accidentally Killed Myself will be represented at NATPE by Rive Gauche Television

~ DISTRIBUTION, CARRIAGE & CLEARANCE ~

Disney-ABC Domestic Television offered an update on clearances for the new nationally syndicated talk show Katie starring Katie Couric.  To date, Katie is now cleared in 93% of the US and will air in 95 of the top 100 markets starting this September.  The live one-hour talk show will air on the ABC Owned station group as well as other broadcast groups including Allbritton Communications, Belo Corporation, Cox Media Group, Gannett Broadcasting, Granite, Griffin, Hearst Television, LIN Broadcasting, McGraw-Hill, Media General, Meredith, Raycom, Scripps Howard Broadcasting, Sinclair and Young Broadcasting, among others.

The joint venture of Lionsgate-TISA Television International (Television Internacional Sur America) made an exclusive deal to represent at least 20 new theatrical films from New Films International in Latin America.  The agreement gives Lionsgate TISA Television International with exclusive rights across all platforms including free, pay, PPV, VOD and mobile.  Film titles involved in the deal include 7 Club, A Novel Romance, Age of Kali, American Cowslip, Brother’s Justice and Burning Palms among other titles.

Telco Productions said WCBS-TV in New York has cleared the half-hour weekly program, What America Things with Scott Rasmussen for fall 2012. 

Peter Rodgers Organizations (PRO) picked up the domestic rights for the one-hour series Conan: The Adventurer with 22 episodes and the one-hour series Acapulco H.E.A.T with 48 episodes.

~ PRODUCTION & DEVELOPMENT ~

ABC approved the one-hour drama, 666 Park Ave. from Alloy Entertainment, the producers of three series on The CW including The Vampire Diaries, The Secret Circle and Gossip Girl.  Warner Bros. Television is also producing 666 Park Ave. which is based in the book series by Gabriella Pierce.   The plot centers on an unsuspecting Midwestern couple that relocates to New York City and is hired to be the resident managers of a building on the Upper East Side.  The building is populated with residents who have made deals with the devil to fulfill their deepest ambitions and desires.  

Anne Heche (Men in Trees, Hung) makes a comeback to series television as producer and star of NBC’s comedy pilot Save Me.  Heche will play a woman who, following an accident, believes she is channeling God. 

Still in its first season, ABC’s Revenge adds Courtney B. Vance to the cast playing a high-powered defense attorney. 

NBC’s single-camera comedy pilot Isabel which already stars Marcia Gay Harden and Sophia Schloss added Alex Desert (Becker) as co-star, per THR.  Sphere Media Plus is producing the pilot based on the Canadian comedy Le Monde de Charlotte whose adaptations rights were picked up by NBC last fall.

Thursday A18-49 Analysis:  FOX led Thursday at 3.9/10 with the A18-49 viewers, according to final national ratings from Nielsen.  FOX’s American Idol ruled the 8p hour at 5.7/15 with CBS’ comedies The Big Bang Theory and Rob next at an average of 4.4/12.  ABC won at 9p with Grey’s Anatomy at 3.5/8 and CBS’ Person of Interest was the runner up at 3.2/8.  CBS ended up in #1 spot at 10p with The Mentalist at 3.0/8 and ABC followed with Private Practice at 2.1/5.

~ EXECUTIVE MOVES ~

A+E Networks elevated Nancy Alpert and Maggie Reilly-Brooks to SVPs/Legal and Business Affairs. Both Nancy and Maggie additionally hold the titles of Deputy General Counsel. 

Litton Entertainment promoted Meg LaVigne to President/Television.  Meg has held several management roles at Litton including VP/Communications and the VP/Sales and Strategy of Litton News Source.  In her new position, Meg will head all departments with the division encompassing development, sales, marketing, creative services and news. 

Michael Maniaci advanced to Director/Development at the Manhattan-based production company, Pipeline 39 Entertainment.  Michael will head the development slate for the company while reporting to Vinnie Kralyevich, President/CEO. 

Effective immediately, Cordillera Communications named Dan Stein as Director/Programming and Operations.  Based in St. Paul and reporting to Terrance Hurley, President, Dan will be involved in operations, research, programming, business analysis, contract negotiations and more.  Furthermore, Dan will work closely with Cordillera Interactive and assist Jay Small, President in the areas of business analysis, third-party vendor relationships and research. 

Island Def Jam Music Group upped Gabe Tesoriero to SVP/Media and Artist Relations.  Gabe will be based in New York where he will head media, publicity and artist relations efforts for the company’s roster of artists including Kanye West, Rihanna, Nas and The Roots among others.

Weigel Broadcasting Co. appointed Maura McDonough Cope as VP of the Me-TV Network.  Presently, Maura is the GSM of the Milwaukee-based Weigel stations and starting immediately she will transition to her new position at Me-TV.
