~ MORE GOOD STUFF ~

Members of the Screen Actors Guild (SAG) and the American Federation of Television and Radio Artists (AFTRA) jointly voted at nearly 94% in favor to pass new three-year contracts involving television and theatrical productions.  Under the terms of the new contracts, SAG and AFTRA members receive a 6% pay raise equal to 2% for each year of the contract, in addition to a 10% increase in employer contributions to the pension and health plans.  The contract, which goes into effect from July 1, 2011 to June 30, 2014, also expands coverage of new media production.

Showtime renewed its comedy Californication for a fifth season, ordering 12 new episodes.  The renewal announcement follows the series’ fourth season launch on January 9 resulting in the best-ever debut with more than a million total viewers for the night.  Production of the new episodes will begin this spring with David Duchovny continuing in the lead as Hank Moody.

Spanish-language cable channel Galavision Network premieres its new half-hour show Detras del Saber (Behind Knowledge) on January 24 at 830p.  Galavision’s new show examines the latest advancements in science and technology with host Jose Ramon Blanch.

Animal Planet airs its annual Puppy Bowl VII on Super Bowl Sunday, February 6 beginning at 3p, featuring frolicking puppies from rescue shelters nationwide recruited with help from Petfinder.  The seventh year of the Puppy Bowl will sport new additions such as chicks on the sidelines and chicken cheerleaders and all-new puppy cam technology.  Fans of Puppy Bowl can also look for intimate moments between the pups with the new Kiss Cam.  At half-time, a new edition of the Bissell Kitty Half-Time Show will include an acoustic solo performance from John Fulton, the host of Animal Planet’s upcoming new series Must Love Cats opening on February 12 at 8p.

FX scheduled the series finale of Rescue Me for September 6, 2011, a date coinciding near the 10th anniversary of 9/11 which also highlights the origins of the drama series.  The inspiration for Rescue Me’s storyline by series’ star Denis Leary was the New York City firefighters who were dealing with the physical and emotional trauma after the event.  FX decided to not position the series conclusion on September 11, because network president John Landgraf said “there are more solemn and appropriate things to do on the day.  The weeks surrounding the day seemed to be the appropriate place to do it.”

A&E Network’s original series debut of Beyond Scared Straight last Thursday at 10p drew in a record 3.7 million total viewers and 2.2 million among A18-49 as well as 2.1 million with A25-54.  The episode opener has become the most-watched original series launch in the network’s history.

~ DISTRIBUTION, CLEARANCE & CARRIAGE ~

After extending their retransmission-consent negotiations a second time on Friday, Time Warner Cable and Sinclair Broadcasting reached a deal in principle on Saturday afternoon involving the continued carriage of Sinclair’s 28 stations.  The final deal is expected to be completed in the next seven days.

In advance of NATPE 2011, Entertainment Concepts International approved a second season of its syndicated series Treasure Hunter’s Roadshow.

~ PRODUCTION & DEVELOPMENT ~

Showtime Networks, Major League Baseball Productions and 2010 World Series champs San Francisco Giants, are collaborating on a new series about professional baseball.  The series will chronicle the players, coaches and team staff of the San Francisco Giants as they defend their World Series title throughout the 2011 MLB season.  Production on the untitled series has started and will be shot over ten months in various locations during off-season then in Scottsdale, AZ for Spring Training and within the ball club during the regular season.  The series will open with a preview episode on MLB’s Opening Day in April followed by a run of regularly scheduled episodes during the latter half of 2011.  The show will expand on the Showtime Sports current roster of programming including Inside the NFL, Inside NASCAR and more.

ABC gave a pilot order for a single-camera comedy Suburgatory from writer Emily Kapnek (NBC’s Parks and Recreation, HBO’s Hung). Warner Bros. Television is behind the satirical perspective about life in the suburbs through the eyes of a typical New Yorker.

CBS picked up two pilots:

  • Sarah Michelle Gellar is readying a return to television in a project titled Ringer from writers Eric Carmelo and Nicole Snyder about a disturbed young woman on the run who hides out by living the life of her rich twin sister.
  • The second pilot is an untitled drama from writer Susannah Grant (The Soloist) about a highly-ambitious surgeon whose life is changed when his ex-wife dies and teaches him about life from the hereafter.

Last week, ABC picked up a remake of Charlie’s Angels and executive producer Leonard Goldberg reported successfully approached 80-year old veteran actor Robert Wagner to be the voice of Charlie.

TNT has a drama project in the works from John Sacret Young and Robert Redford’s Wildwood Enterprises about a Southern family involving flashbacks from 20-40 years before. Young and Redford will serve as executive producers along with Bill Holderman.
