Cynopsis: DIGITAL

01/12/09

Good morning, it’s Monday, January 12, 2009, and this is your first early morning digital briefing.

The Cable News Network that Ted Turner built is increasingly becoming known for its live streaming of news events (ever since it dropped its paid wall, that is.) Couple CNN.com with the hottest social network and you could really have something. CNN and Facebook will team up to deliver a live webcast of Barack Obama’s inauguration on Jan. 20 via the CNN Live portal. An application running on CNN Live will enable Facebook members to watch and interact with their friends during the historic address; comments will show up live on the app as well as on your Facebook page. (Facebook members can click here to RSVP.) Despite the early start time (10 am ET/7 am PT,) CNN is expecting huge simultaneous streaming numbers and is currently selling video and banner ads to the event.

Anne Sweeney, co-chair of Disney Media Networks and President of Disney-ABC Television Group, highlighted the importance of the user interface when developing and distributing content for new platforms. Sweeney said ABC “might be” developing a widget powered by Intel’s CE 3100 multimedia chip geared to help viewers interact with and view episodes of Good Morning America and Lost on multiple platforms. ABC utilized online video to help maintain viewer interest during season breaks last season with Lost Missing Pieces, which filled in narrative gaps from the first 3 seasons and provided glimpses into future storylines.

Lifetime‘s has revamped the entertainment section of its website, myLifetime.com, adding a new blog called Celebrity Limelight, focusing on entertainment news and gossip. The blog is written by Carla Hay, Entertainment Producer for myLifetime.com.

~ INNOVATORS & START-UPS ~

Online media service Boxee officially entered public Alpha opening its service to all Mac, Ubuntu (the hottest version of Linux) and Apple TV users. The missing link for the iTunes-focused Apple TV device, Boxee enables streaming of many other popular online services on your television including Hulu, Netflix, YouTube, CNN, Revision3, CBS and Comedy Central. Boxee also added support of Joost, MTV Music and the BBC’s iPlayer (available only from the UK) and released a new API to allow third party developers port their services to the interface.

The performer of YouTube’s all-time leading hit Evolution of Dance (109 million views and counting) hopes lightning can strike twice. Judson Laipply unveils the sequel today on self improvement site PeopleJam entitled – you guessed it, Evolution of Dance 2. This time there’s a UGC contest, the Evolution of Dance-Off, sponsored by Saveology.com.

Internet-based online movie service CinemaNow announced an integration with Plano, TX-based Prodea Systems’ Digital Lifestyle Command Center designed to push digital media from the home network to multiple devices including televisions and digital picture frames. The platform was devised to help telcos, cable operators and other broadband service providers to deliver content and other services to subscribers including home network management and security camera monitoring.

~ TECHNOLOGY DEALS, MERGERS AND SKIRMISHES ~

Outgoing FCC Chairman Kevin Martin requested that more funding be allocated for the government’s tapped-out coupon program during his final address at CES and suggested that the coupon’s 90-day expiration date be extended to avoid “customer confusion.”  Martin also announced the creation of a new International TV White Spaces and Fellowship and Training Initiative in which FCC engineers will work with international regulators to solve technical issues associated with the use of internet-based products and services on unused broadcast spectrum.

A total of 63 TV stations in 22 markets reaching approximately 35% OF U.S. TV Households plan to launch mobile DTV services in 2009 according to the Open Mobile Video Coalition (OMVC). The new technology, being adopted by many of the major television station groups in the U.S., will provide live, local and national over-the-air digital television to consumers via next-generation portable and mobile devices at both pedestrian and vehicular speeds.

~ TRENDS, RESEARCH, ETC.  ~

Technologies made possible by advances such as the OMVC standard must be harnessed for educational applications as well, points out educational foundation The Joan Ganz Cooney Center at Sesame Workshop. The group released a new study which found that mobile learning technology may represent the next frontier for educators if effective educational content and support is developed for these new platforms. Findings and recommendations of Pockets of Potential: Using Mobile Technologies to Promote Children’s Learning include the call for:

  • Government investment in R&D to assess the impact mobile technologies have on children’s learning and development
  • Establishment of a Digital Teachers Corps to prepare educators how to use digital media
  • Creation of a White House Initiative on Digital Learning
  • Introduction of mobile devices in schools, beginning with an experimentation phase in which teachers are trained for integrating interactive mobile media

~ GADGETS & APPS ~

Remember Palm, the one-time champion of the PDA market? Don’t bury the brand just yet - the company finally unveiled its long-awaited smartphone, the Palm Pre, last week at CES. A winner of this year’s CNET Best of Show award, the Pre is designed to take the best of both the Blackberry and iPhone, combining a 3.1 inch touchscreen allowing, users to pinch and expand photos and web pages, with a full QWERTY keyboard women with two-inch nails can operate. It also offers Wi-Fi connectivity, a 3 megapixel camera, GPS capability and - like the T-Mobile G1 – integration with the Amazon Music Store for direct MP3 purchases. The Pre, due out during the first half of 2009, will run on a brand new WebOS designed to synch with Microsoft Outlook and other productivity software.

Netbooks, cheap mini laptops that ship with the ability to connect to the internet via Wi-Fi or Teleco’s wireless broadband networks, generated much buzz this week at CES. To counter Acer’s $100 Aspire One (available from Radio Shack w/a 2 year, $60/mo. agreement with AT&T,) Dell slashed the price of its Mini 9 to $100 (also with a 2 year AT&T agreement) and unveiled the Mini 10, due out in March 2009. The Mini 10 runs on an Intel Atom processor to power a built-in TV tuner capable of HD 720p resolution.

Popular online communications service Skype launched a mobile version optimized for Android-powered devices including the T-Mobile G1 in the U.S. “Skype lite” allows users to make Skype-to-Skype calls for no extra charge (outside of data plan charges), send or receive instant messages and make Skype calls to landlines or mobile phones at competitive rates.

For the second year in a row, Eye-Fi claimed the prize in the ninth annual Last Gadget Standing SuperSession sponsored by NetShelter, as determined by the crowd’s reception on Saturday. This year Eye-Fi demoed the new Eye-Fi Video Card, which allows users to wirelessly upload videos and share videos in real time, over the internet. The emWave Personal Stress Reliever, a portable biofeedback tool from HeartMath that helps users “reduce stress, balance emotions and increase performance,” won in an online vote at the Last Gadget Standing site.

~ EXECUTIVE MOVES ~

New York-based commercial production company Zero 2 Sixty and their design, effects and post partner Guerilla FX , have signed Director/Cinematographer George Billard for exclusive U.S. spot representation and for the creation of interactive content.

~ WEBSITE OF THE DAY ~

The big news here in the Pacific Northwest over the weekend was the likely demise of Hearst’s Seattle Post-Intelligencer. (Hearst announced it is looking for a buyer for the paper – good luck with that – or that it may even consider turning Seattle’s oldest daily into a digital-only edition.) Things are tough over for traditional news organizations and we are all worse off for it. One area that has been hit the hardest by news budget cutbacks is international reporting. Enter GlobalPost.com, a brand new international-focused news and syndication service launching today that gives new definition to the term lean and mean. GlobalPost has cobbled together a network of 60 correspondents who are already “embedded” in 46 countries around the globe. The start-up has tracked down well-established stringers who are gainfully employed elsewhere and agreed to pay them $1,000/month plus a share in the company. Because it’s a digital publication, each writer is being equipped with a new cigarette packet-sized Mino HD Flip camcorder so they can complement their dispatches with video whenever possible. The site, which also features plenty of vivid photography contributed by freelancers, will make money by selling ads and signing syndication agreements with other news sites a la Politco.com, according to GlobalPost CEO and co-founder Philip S. Balboni. “We need to instill a sense of entrepreneurship in our employees and correspondents that I think is essential to the future of journalism,” said Balboni. “If we can do well, we’ll do well together and the spirit of independent reporting will survive.”
