Cynopsis

01.11.10

Good morning! It’s Monday, January 11, 2010, and this is your first early morning briefing.   And as always, if you prefer to watch this morning’s news instead of reading it, click here.

Tonight’s Premieres:
ABC’s Live Well HD Network: Save My Planet
WFN: World Fishing Network: Hookin’ Up with Mariko Izumi at 730p
Telemundo:  Perro Amor at 9p
Investigation Discovery: Disappeared at 10p
Slice Network: Love Incorporated at 10p
Travel Channel: Anthony Bourdain: No Reservations at 10p
VH1: Fantasia: For Real at 10p; Let’s Talk About Pep at 1030p

NBC Entertainment President Jeff Gaspin announced the network is taking The Jay Leno Show off the air in primetime as of February 12. At the TCA Winter Press Tour, Gaspin said outright, the decision to pull Leno’s primetime show was due to the pressure received from affiliates to make a change and the talk of possible preemptions if the show remained on the air. Gaspin indicated there is not a solid plan for the 10p time slot going forward, though emphasized, “My goal right now is to keep Jay, Conan and Jimmy as part of our late night line up. I have spoken to all of them and proposed that the Jay Leno show move to 1135p, Conan move to 1205a and Jimmy to late night at 105a,” said Gaspin. “As much as I would like to tell you it’s a done deal, we know that’s not true.” Gaspin finished by saying the talks are ongoing.

Clokey first created Gumby as a student project at the University of Southern California in the early 1950s, dubbing it Gumbasia. Later, he made shorts featuring Gumby and his horse friend Pokey for the Howdy Doody Show and other TV series over the years. Gumby’s look was a combination of the cowlick hair style sported by Clokey’s late father and his wife suggested Gumby have the body like a gingerbread man. Through the years, Gumby inspired numerous toys, revival TV series and satires including the memorable 1980s Saturday Night Live sketch with Eddie Murphy.

~ PRODUCTION & DEVELOPMENT ~

Following The Tudors run, Showtime will continue with another dynastic period series, this time set in Renaissance Italy. The premium network ordered ten episodes of The Borgias about the powerful Italian family with Jeremy Irons tapped to star as the patriarch. Neil Jordan is creating the project and executive producing and Michael Hirst, creator of The Tudors, will write and also executive produce. Production on The Borgias will begin this spring with a 2011 planned premiere. Canadian-European Treaty is co-producing.

Showtime also ordered ten episodes of the comedy series Episodes headlined by Matt LeBlanc about a fictional hit TV show from overseas that is adapted for the US with LeBlanc cast to star.

ABC approved a new drama series called Scoundrels based on the New Zealand series Outrageous Fortune. The project, from ABC Studios, was given an eight-episode order and is due to premiere this summer. The plot is about a family of small-time criminals and when the dad is sent to prison with a long sentence, mom tries to curb her kids thieving habits, making them go straight. Richard Levine and Lyn Greene penned the script and will executive produce and serve as showrunners; Francie Calfo also executive produces. Michael Larkin and Michael Goldstein are attached as co-executive producers.

On the heels of David Hasselhoff’s announcement he is leaving NBC’s America’s Got Talent, Howie Mandel takes his place. Mandel joins judges Piers Morgan and Sharon Osbourne for the show’s fifth season.

Though not official, Ted Koppel is talking with ABC News about rejoining the network as anchor of the Sunday morning show This Week, replacing George Stephanopoulos who left recently to co-anchor Good Morning America. Koppel previously anchored Nightline for ABC, leaving the show in 2005. Currently, Koppel is a commentator for BBC America and NPR. ABC News said several candidates are being considered for the This Week position, including ABC’s Terry Moran and Jake Tapper as well as PBS’ Gwen Ifill.
