Cynopsis: Kids!

01/11/10

Good morning. It’s Monday, January 11, 2010, and this is your first early morning Kids briefing.

Will season four be the last for Disney Channel‘s live-action series Hannah Montana?  Could be  only time will tell, which is to say the network won’t confirm that just yet.  What we do know is that physical production of Hannah Montana is slated to wrap this year with season four, according to a network spokesperson.  Furthermore new Hannah Montana episodes and specials from season three and four will premiere on the network now through spring 2011.  The third season finale is currently set to bow on Disney Channel (and DVD) in March 2010 and will be followed by season four, which will include 2×60 special episodes.  Season three ends with Miley Stewart/Hannah Montana (played by Miley Cyrus) trying to decide if she wants to stay in LA and continue to live her double life as a regular kid and pop star, or return home to Tennessee.  Cyrus, who is now 17, has a number of projects in the works at Disney including with its TV, music, consumer products, publishing and movie divisions.

Marvel Entertainment filed suit against the heirs of long-time Marvel comic book artist Jack Kirby on Friday to end the family’s ongoing effort to reclaim copyright to those Marvel characters, including some of its most popular super heroes, Kirby created/co-created.  In September 2009 the Kirby heirs sent 45 notices to Marvel seeking copyright termination for characters including the X-Men and Fantastic Four.  In the notices the heirs assert that from 2014  2019 various rights supposedly transferred to Marvel will revert back to them.  The Marvel suit rejects those claims as baseless, saying that like other artists and writers during the time period, Kirby’s work for Marvel were works for hire, thus making Marvel the sole copyright owner.  As of last week Marvel Entertainment is a wholly-owned subsidiary of The Walt Disney Company.

NEW PRODUCTION & DEVELOPMENT

India’s DQ Entertainment (DQE) is developing a series of non-verbal, 3D animated short films for TV based on Charlie Chaplin’s movies and his characters.  With a production budget of US$11.5 million, the 104×6 kid and family-targeted short films will be produced (in color) and distributed by DQE in collaboration with France’s Method Animation and MK2.

Gossip Girl’s Blake Lively joins the cast of Warner Bros.’ live-action feature film Green Lantern, playing Carol Ferris, opposite Ryan Reynolds as Green Lantern (AKA Hal Jordan), per THR.  Directed by Martin Campbell, the Green Lantern movie is slated to begin shooting this March with a scheduled release date of June 17, 2011.  The movie is based DC Comics’ superhero Green Lantern.  Lively also starred in Warner Bros.’ The Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants feature films and Warner Bros.’ upcoming movie The Town, directed by and starring Ben Affleck.

Actor Stuart Townsend exits Paramount‘s Kenneth Branagh-directed feature film Thor due to creative differences, per the AP.  Relative newcomer Joshua Dallas will now play the role of Fandral, which was to be played by Townsend.  Now scheduled for release on May 6, 2011, production on Thor is just beginning.

MORE KIDS STUFF

BKN New Media SL, Spain-based sister company of the UK company of the same name, enters into a new toy distribution deal with Simba Espana for Spain, Portugal and Andorra for the animated series Zorror Generation Z.  The first season of Zorro Generation Z, which includes 26×30 episodes and two movies, has already aired in Spain on RTVE’s Clan TV and Telecinco.  TVE plans to debut season two of the series when it is available, with SIC Portugal set to launch season one this year.

InternetSafety.com announces a major upgrade to its Safe Eyes family-targeted internet management software, designed to enable parents to filter online TV and movie content based on standard TV and movie ratings.  Parents will be able to block kids’ access to explicit music lyrics, deploy filters on major search engines and receive daily or weekly reports on kid’s online activities by email.  The filtering software can be used on Hulu, iTunes and the websites of major networks including ABC, NBC, CBS and Fox.

American Greetings Properties (AGP) expands its partnership with Alicom Licensing to include tow of AGP’s properties, Care Bears and Holly Hobbie.  The deal grants Alicom the merchandising rights to grow the properties in Denmark, Finland, Iceland, Norway and Sweden.

Amulet Books, an imprint of Abrams, inks a deal with Lucasfilm, Ltd. to feature Yoda n a new middle school novel titled The Strange Case of Origami Yoda.  Written by Tom Angleberger, the book revolves around Dwight, a “total loser,” who somehow provides his sixth-grade classmates with particularly useful advice via an origami Yoda finger puppet; like the date of a pop-quiz, who has a crush on whom, and moments of potential humiliation.  How does Dwight do it?  That’s what Tommy, a hipper classmate, wants to know and sets to finding out how a dork like Dwight is pulling this stunt off.

Turner CN Enterprises enters into new and renewed licensee deals for Ben 10 in the UK.  Among the ten new Ben 10 licensees include: Party licensee Mask-arade signs on to produce paper masks; Publishing International Ltd is developing Ben 10 sound books; Itzme will launch digitally enhanced Ben 10 wall coverings (supported by the business website www.itzme.eu.com); Little star Creations releases property branded headphones this month.  Additionally, Turner CN Enterprises is also working with Premier Portfolio to development products for travel retail including airlines, airport shops and ferries.  Meanwhile, Master toy licensee Bandai is developing new exclusive Ben 10 product lines for the UK.
