A&E Television Networks canceled premiere plans for its eight-part miniseries The Kennedys on the HISTORY Channel. Production on the miniseries is complete and was scheduled to premiere this spring. AETN said while the miniseries was “produced and acted with the highest quality, after viewing the final product in its totality, we have concluded this dramatic interpretation is not a fit for the HISTORY brand.” A network spokesperson also said the content of the miniseries was apparently not historically accurate and did not pass the network’s standards. The multi-million dollar production is considered to be the most expensive program ever for the network and is the first scripted miniseries for HISTORY. Greg Kinnear led the cast as John F. Kennedy, Katie Holmes as Jacqueline Bouvier Kennedy, Barry Pepper as Robert F. Kennedy and Tom Wilkinson as Joe Kennedy. Joel Surnow developed the miniseries which was produced by Asylum Entertainment and Muse Entertainment. The Kennedys will still air in Canada beginning March 6 and will also launch globally.

A&E Network set the premiere date for its original scripted drama series, Breakout Kings for March 13 at 10p. The new action drama is about an unusual partnership between the US Marshals’ office and a group of convicts as they work together to catch fugitives on the run. Matt Olmstead and Nick Santora, writers/producers on the former series Prison Break, are the creators/writers and executive producers on Breakout Kings, produced by Fox 21 and Chernin Entertainment.

A&E also renewed its original, real-life series Storage Wars for a second season, ordering 20 episodes. Production on the new season has started with the new episodes bowing in second quarter 2011. Presently, the first season is averaging 2.3 million total viewers and new episodes air on Wednesday nights. The series is produced by Original Productions, a FremantleMedia Company.

Lifetime is launching several new reality series next month:

  • One Born Every Minute, a one-hour series following expectant mothers in their final stage of pregnancy inside the maternity ward at Riverside Methodist Hospital in Columbus, Ohio. The series premieres February 1.
  • Seriously Funny Kids, the previously announced series hosted by Heidi Klum, debuts following One Born Every Minute on February 1.
  • Quad Squad (wt) follows a set of identical quadruplet sisters during their last year of high school in Minnesota. It bows February 9.
  • Glamour Belles is a workplace docu-series set inside a small town pageant gown shop in Union City, Tennessee. This series also premieres February 9.

AMC will premiere its original series The Killing on April 3 at 10p. The Killing, from writer/executive producer/showrunner, Veena Sud (Cold Case) is inspired by the Danish television series titled Forbrydelsen and relates the story of a murdered young girl in Seattle and the following police investigation. AMC is airing thirteen, one-hour episodes for the first season. The Killings is produced by Fox Television Studios and executive produced by Mikkel Bondesen for Fuse Entertainment.

HBO set the premiere date for its new series Game of Thrones, based on the fantasy book series by George R.R. Martin, for April 17. Game of Thrones stars Sean Bean, Emilia Clark and Peter Dinklage. HBO further said its miniseries Mildred Pierce, headlined by Kate Winslet, Guy Pearce and Evan Rachel Wood debuts March 27.

MTV’s third season premiere of Jersey Shore last Thursday night tallied 8.45 million total viewers and delivered a 4.2 rating among A18-49. This season opener becomes MTV’s most-watched series telecast ever. Additionally, the season premiere averaged an 8.3 rating and 6.5 million viewers with P12-34.

The network has ordered five, one-hour episodes slated to premiere in second quarter 2011.

Hallmark Channel adds a new daily cooking show helmed by chef Emeril Lagasse that is slotted into the network’s Hallmark Channel Home daytime block. The show premieres in fourth quarter 2011 and is produced in association with Martha Stewart Living Omnimedia, Inc.

Starz is moving forward with a second full season of its series Spartacus. The network said on Friday it will recast the lead character, previously played by Andy Whitfield who was diagnosed with non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma last March.

HBO approved a new comedy series titled Girls from Lena Dunham who also stars in the project. Production begins this spring in New York about a group of underemployed 20-something women juggling life in New York City. Judd Apatow and Jenni Konner will executive produce Girls.

The only grandchild brings the two families together. Andrew Reich and Ted Cohen wrote the pilot which is based on their own personal lives. Warner Bros. Television is producing.

TLC is expected to not renew the Mark Burnett-produced Sarah Palin’s Alaska series for a second season, reports EW. The series has averaged 3.2 million viewers and it is likely last night’s two-hour finale was the show’s last episode.
