AT&T‘s stranglehold on service for the coveted iPhone will likely end tomorrow when it’s widely expected Apple will announce that Verizon will also begin selling the iPhone. Verizon has sent out press invites to a Tuesday Jan. 11 event in NY, while the Wall Street Journal has reported that Verizon has indeed landed the deal with Apple. Verizon is the largest cellular network in the U.S., AT&T the second. According to Nielsen, Apple commands 27% of the SmartPhone market – some experts say its share could double with Verizon on board. “Leaked figures last month suggested that while Verizon grew its SmartPhone sales from 2.7m to 3.3m in the third quarter of 2010, AT&T’s iPhone sales alone grew from 2.7m to 5.7m following the introduction of the iPhone 4 in the summer,” The Guardian wrote in an article. ~ MULTIPLATFORM CONTENT NEWS ~
Fox Filmed Entertainment will offer digital screeners for its Fox Searchlight SAG-nominated flicks Black Swan, 127 Hours, and Conviction for free download via iTunes to the guild’s voting members. They’ll need a special access code to download the films. Traditionally, movie studios have sent physical DVDs of “for your consideration” picks to voting members of various academies and guilds. But in recent years, studios have sought digital solutions. Fox said its also talking to Oscar members about iTunes downloads. The SAG awards will be presented Jan. 30. MTV‘s hit series Jersey Shore garnered its highest ratings ever for its season three premiere last week, delivering 8.45 million total viewers. The show averaged an 8.3 rating/6.5 million viewers in the 12-34 demo to become MTV’s most watched series telecast ever. While tablets and SmartPhones dominated most of the CES headlines, a good old-fashioned automobile took center stage on Friday. In a keynote, Ford CEO Alan Mulally introduced the automaker’s first all-electric car called the Focus Electric, hitting roads in 2013. The car will reportedly recharge in three to four hours and Ford has teamed up with Best Buy and Leviton to sell home charging stations that will likely cost about $1500. Mulally did not reveal the cost for the car, but did say he thinks electric cars like the Focus will pave the way for hydrogen vehicles in the future. More connected TV news came out of Las Vegas – Orb Networks introduced new software for blu-rays and Playstations to route online programming to those devices. Orb says the software can be controlled with a Smartphone app or a computer. The service is priced at $19.99. One of the hottest areas in the digital ad business is real-time bidding, but less than one-third of Web publishers offered it on their ad inventory last year, according to a report from eMarketer sourcing real-time media management platform DataXu and events company DigiDay. However, about 44% of publishers will offer real-time bidding this year, the report said. Most publishers offer display ads in a real-time fashion rather than rich media. That may keep real-time bidding as a remnant play for a while. However, agencies said they would shift about 18% of their ad network allocations this year to demand-side platforms, suggesting growth is coming fast. On Monday the ad network Casale Media will have integrated Nielsen PRIZM segmentation into its 3000-site ad network. This integration should make it easier for marketers to access offline segmentation data in one interface for online campaigns. Contextual advertising firm Vibrant grew its worldwide staff last year by 25% to 250 and plans to continue hiring this year, the company said. It reaches 144 million unique users across its network, according to comScore. Marketing agency Double 7 launched last week and says it’s focused on helping brands create media campaigns rooted in strong storytelling. The company has a team of 18 filmmakers and media specialists who have worked with entities such as Ubuntu Education Fund (South Africa) and Arizona State University on narrative media for brands. The TV everywhere model appears to be taking a new wrinkle – a tablet wrinkle. At CES Friday Samsung said Comcast and Time Warner cable customers will be able to access their cable services on both the Samsung Smart TV and the Samsung tablet. Via the Time Warner partnership, subscribers can also access their recorded DVR content in another room from the Samsung Smart TV without needing another set-top box. Comcast customers can access Comcast’s Xfinity TV service on Samsung tablets and Smart TVs. The news follows Comcast’s announcement that it would offer live and VOD programming on tablets powered by Apple and Android, underscoring the importance of tablets in the company’s TV Everywhere play. Samsung is also still working on Google TV angles, according to published reports. The company plans to introduce a blu-ray DVD player that’ll use Google’s software, according to Dow Jones, while Reuters reports that the TV maker is engaged in talks about making a Google-branded connected TV. If Samsung rolls out GoogleTV on its sets, such a deal could breathe new life into Google TV, which took a beating when it stumbled in early launches late last year. ~ TRENDS, RESEARCH, ETC. ~
Social games are big business – 19% of consumers now play them online and the market is worth nearly a billion dollars, said a new study from Econsultancy based on a survey of 2000 consumers. Brands such as McDonalds, Volvo and Disney have been active in this space. ~ GADGETS & APPS ~
During a keynote panel at CES, tech giant Cisco shared details of its new “Videoscape” networking system that purports to help service providers deliver content to any device. “We have an opportunity, along with service providers and our partners, to reinvent the entire TV experience,” said Cisco CEO John Chambers during the event. The Videoscape solution is targeted to pay TV providers, like a Comcast or Echostar, and would help them ferry a vast array of Web, TV, mobile and other content via broadband to whatever device the consumer is using. Fastpoint Games inked a deal with Sony Online Entertainment that brings the massively multiplayer game Everquest II to Facebook. Players can earn points through Facebook to use inside of the game, bringing a broader type of integration to Facebook, Fastpoint said. At TCA, PBS said its iPhone and iTouch app is also being offered in the App Store, Apple’s desktop version of the iTunes app marketplace. The PBS app features more than 300 hours of free video, including full-length shows. The network also rolled out its Antiques Roadshow game app that lets users appraise and bid on antiques. ~ EXECUTIVE MOVES ~
Once again, Steve Jobs took a symbolic salary last year of $1, according to a regulatory filing, the same salary he’s drawn each year since returning as CEO of Apple in 1997. He does, however, own 5.5 million shares of the hugely profitable computer giant whose revenues hit $65.2 billion last year.
