Interactive TV specialist FourthWall Media is announcing a new integration deal with Rovi Corp. Monday morning to offer an EBIF-standards compliant Enhanced TV solution to Rovi interactive guide customers throughout North and South America. (Rovi acquired Gemstar-TV Guide’s IPG assets about 2 years ago and enjoys roughly 90% of the IPG market in the U.S.) Under the agreement, Rovi will make an initial set of pre-integrated, customizable TV Widgets from FourthWall available to cable operators, including eBay on TV, Yellow Pages on TV, News, Weather, and various pro and college Sports widgets. The integrated solution will also enable MSOs to launch third party EBIF applications without having to perform separate integrations, perhaps finally setting the stage for real iTV development in the U.S.
MacMillian book titles returned to the Amazon Kindle book store after the two parties reached a new pricing agreement that will allow the publisher to charge as much as $14.99 for new releases.
Sports Illustrated is planning to webcast several days of this year’s Swimsuit edition shoot as part of a campaign launched in conjunction with the Las Vegas Convention and Visitors Authority. Ustream will handle the live video beginning Feb. 9 with a noon (PT) Q&A with this year’s cover model. SoBe is sponsoring the group’s Facebook page.

Facebook has upgraded its photo uploader software that will require the installation of a browser plug-in. The new uploader, which is rolling out gradually over the coming weeks, supports a wider range of formats including .jpg, .gif, .bmp and .png. The site currently receives some 2.5 billion photo uploads a month.
Perhaps realizing that innovative content may ultimately drive e-reader sales, Amazon has posted a want ad for a “Kindle Unique Content Specialist.” The position blends vendor management with creative and technical aspects of product development.

YouTube re-launched its Ad Blitz site allowing viewers to vote for their favorite Super Bowl commercials.
In a legal filing late Thur. the Dept. of Justice indicated that Google‘s newly revised settlement with authors and publishers to create a huge digital bookstore made up of out-of-print or “orphan” books is much improved but that it still needs work. The DOJ notes that the agreement would give Google a monopoly on a vast number of titles in multiple formats. The Dept. also remains unconvinced that foreign authors, who may have had their works licensed in English speaking countries, are adequately represented in the revised settlement.
Global mobile content retailer Mobile Streams has partnered with IMImobile, a global service to provide IMI with a data service in 21 countries in Africa and the Middle East.
While fear of Over-the-Top services remains palpable among multichannel TV providers, the threat may not be crucial just yet, according to a new Parks Associates‘ study. Parks’ “All Eyes on Video” report found that only 5.5 million homes would be open to canceling pay TV due in part to the availability of online video. At the same time, one-half of these households are also considering a switch to a new pay-TV provider, indicating the primary threats to Pay TV distributors are still their traditional competitors. Just 0.5% of broadband households (350,000 homes) had pay TV, cancelled it, and now watch five or more hours of online video per week. The households likely to “cord cut” watch a sizeable 10 hours of online video each week – much higher than typical video consumers. They also express strong interest in having online access to pay-TV channels, indicating a healthy demand for TV Everywhere-type services. Offline video consumption is also higher among these potential cord cutters. Their median number of DVD rentals from the last six months is 18, compared to two rentals among other households. They’re getting their video fix, they’re just relying on other mediums and models.
The worldwide converged mobile device market (a.k.a. smartphones) reached new record levels during Q4 ’09 as vendors shipped a total of 54.5 million units, up 39.0% from the same quarter a year ago according to IDC. For the full year, vendors shipped a total of 174.2 million units in 2009, up 15.1% from the 151.4 million units in 2008. Converged mobile devices accounted for 15.4% of all mobile phones shipped in 2009, up slightly from 12.7% in 2008. Nokia remained the leader in the smartphone arena, ending the quarter with roughly the same market share it had a year ago.

Tales2Go has partnered with major audio publishers including Recorded Books, Audio Bookshelf, Audio Holdings and August House to create a new iPhone app that offers access to more than 800 children’s stories, many read by the authors themselves. The subscription-based app ($24.99 annually,) also allows kids to stream their own audio stories through the platform. Tales2Go plans to roll out Blackberry, Palm Pre and Android versions of the app in the coming months.
Hallmark‘s greeting card division has launched a new free iPhone app around popular e-card personalities hoops&yoyo (a pink cat and a green bunny invented in 2001.) The app features a variety of Bingo-style games, with integrations to Twitter, Facebook and other networks. Mssrs. hoops&yoyo have been featured in more than 200 flash animations and 50 million e-cards to date, according to Hallmark.
Ryan O’Hara has left his post as President of TV Guide Network and TVGuide.com to take an unnamed position in New York, a post he has held since 2005. Recent hire Diane Robina, EVP of Development, Acquisitions and Programming Strategy, will help fill the leadership void.
Internet and social networking services are playing an increasingly important role on Super Bowl Sunday, according to a pre-game survey conducted by ComScore. Super Bowl advertisers put much effort into their social media campaigns this year and are counting on lots of residual value from online video replays of the spots they paid $2.5 million or more to feature yesterday. However Pepsi went out on a limb this year, forgoing a spot in the big game in favor of its social “Pepsi Refresh” initiative. The idea is to create grass roots branding recognition by giving away $20 million to fund health, arts & culture, food/shelter, environmental, educational or community projects. RefreshEverything.com is the hub of the campaign, where fans can go to submit ideas and vote for their favorite grant applications. Postings can be submitted as written grant proposals or as video postings. Awards range from $5k to $250k.
