Cynopsis: Sports
02/06/12

Good morning. It’s Monday, February 6, 2012, and this is your first early morning Sports briefing.

A tight Super Bowl matchup, seemingly plucked away yet again by the Giants, should deliver NBC with record numbers for the game, and please the bevy of advertisers who threw down their cash for the game.

Which brand hit the uprights? Multiple agencies monitored reaction and engagement to the game, and here are some of their winners. According to Ace Metrix, Doritos scored with the top two ads in the entire broadcast: the Sling Baby spot dominating the competition with a 677 Ace Score while runner -up Man’s Best Friend had a 645 Ace Score. Other winners were Coke’s Superstition spot, Honda’s Matthew’s Day Off and Skechers’ Go Run Mr. Quiggly. The organization found that H&M delivered with the least liked ad of the game with an Ace Score of 450.

Going by overall buzz, and monitoring the number of mentions in the social media universe that took place during the game, the top brand according to the CNBC/Collective Intellect Super Sunday Ad Tracker was Chevrolet, followed by Doritos, The Avengers, The Hunger Games, Volkswagon, Coca Cola, Budweiser, G.I. Joe, Century 21 and H&M.

On the Air

On Friday, the NFL announced a boost to the amount of primetime games set for next season, with NFL Network receiving an additional five games to its Thursday night package. The new 13-game lineup will run from weeks 2 through 15 (skipping only week 12) and all 32 NFL teams will now have a primetime slot somewhere in the season. In addition, NFL is launching a new Spanish-language version of NFL RedZone channel for the fall as well.

NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell is mulling an end to the Pro Bowl. Goodell took to the airwaves over the weekend, telling ESPN’s Mike and Mike in the Morning that if the league can’t figure out how to improve the game, he would consider eliminating it. “I really didn’t think that was the kind of football that we want to be demonstrating for our fans,” he said on the show. “And you heard it from the fans. The fans were actively booing in the stands. They didn’t like what they were seeing.”

NBA TV announced fans had selected Tuesday’s Thunder/Warriors game as this week’s featured contest for Fan Night presented by Sprint. The game will tip off at 10:30p and was decided by online vote at nba.com, NBA’s Facebook page, and Yahoo.com. Rick Kamla and Steve Smith will begin coverage beginning at 6:30p ahead of the Jazz/Pacers at 7p.

FUEL TV’s preliminary-card telecast for UFC on FOX 2 drew a 0.35 household rating and an average of 144,000 viewers, according to reports.

The NHRA Full Throttle Drag Racing Series announced its 2012 television schedule with ESPN through 23 races that will feature Sunday night prime-time slots on ESPN2 or ESPN for nearly every event. All six of the sport’s playoff events are slated to offer eliminations coverage in prime time and more than 100 hours of original programming dedicated to the season.

The IOC locked down a deal for Japanese broadcast rights to the 2014 and 2016 Olympics in a $472 million deal that delivers the games to a national consortium that includes state broadcaster NHK and the National Association of Commercial Broadcasters of Japan.

Cardinals top play-by-play announcer Dan McLaughlin is reportedly set to return for his 15th season in the booth for Fox Sports Midwest following a drunk driving arrest at the end of last season, according to St. Louis Today.

Sponsorship & Promotion

EA Sports is looking to double the fun for the launch of Madden 13, with the company expanding last year’s successful 32-player tournament for the famed cover into a 64-man field. The game’s Facebook page posted that the first round will now pit two players from the same team against each other before facing players from other teams. The full bracket is set to be announced on ESPN’s SportsNation on March 7th.

The Super Bowl ads got personal yesterday, with reports that a Chevrolet commercial featuring the Silverado taking a shot at Ford was not well received by the rival car maker. Yahoo! reports that Ford sent General Motors a cease and desist letter to pull the ad, and also put pressure on NBC to cut it from the commercial lineup although NBC did not choose to do so.

Digital Fields

Somebody got trigger happy over at the New York Giants, when the team’s site accidently posted that the team was the Super Bowl champions on Saturday, and prompting a backlash of fans afraid that the site would jinx the team. Comcast SportsNet New England’s Michael Giardi first reported the mistake.

The Knicks are launching a new free mobile application for fans that will integrate Knicks online community platform KnicksNow.com and offer fans live scores and in-game statistics, as well as player bios, schedule and ticket purchase links.

The Main Event

Connecticut/Louisville in a Bog East battle on ESPN at 7p.
