Good morning. It’s Monday, February 5, 2007 and this is your first early morning Kids! briefing.
Turner Broadcasting is expected to pay $1 million to the City of Boston and nearby cities as restitution for the response and actions related to the terror scare last week triggered by Cartoon Network’s Adult Swim guerilla marketing campaign to promote Aqua Teen Hunger Force. In addition to a public apology posted on the Adult Swim web site, Turner Broadcasting purchased two full page ads in the Boston Globe and Boston Herald, with a further apology from Chairman/CEO Phil Kent for the incident.
NEW PRODUCTION & DEVELOPMENT
Universal has picked up the rights to Simon Bloom, the Gravity Keeper, the first in a series of fantasy/physics-based young-adult novels by author Michael Reisman, per Hollywood Reporter. Gary Ross and Allison Thomas along with Gotham Group’s Ellen Goldsmith-Vein will produce the live-action movie version of the book, which is set to be published by Penguin in August 2007. This is Reisman’s first book; his regular job is as a script reader for companies including Nickelodeon.
Just about every fan blog is reporting that writer/director David Goyer, who co-wrote the screenplay for Batman Begins, is no longer going to write and direct The Flash feature film, based on the DC Comics property, for Warner Bros. On his own blog, Goyer says, “… I am sad to say that my version of The Flash is dead at WB,” he continues on to say that the two could not reach an agreement on what would “make for a cool Flash [animated] film.”
Also parting ways are writer Joss Whedon and Warner Bros. The two had been working on a movie version of Wonder Woman, also based on a DC Comics’ property. On his blog, Whedon wrote, “I’m no longer slated to make Wonder Woman. What? But how? My Chest … so tight! Okay, stay calm and I’ll explain as best I can. It’s pretty complicated, so bear with me. I had a take on the film that, well, nobody liked. Hey, not that complicated.” Read: creative differences.
MORE KIDS STUFF
It’ll be singer/actor Justin Timberlake who will serve as the host of Nickelodeon’s 20th annual Kids’ Choice Awards, according to AP. The 2007 Kids Choice Awards will air on the network live from LA on March 31, 2007. Timberlake has three of the Kids Choice Awards statues of his own, which he won for favorite musical group, when he was in the ‘N Sync (1999) and he was recognized twice for his phenomenal burps (2003, 2006).
The fifth season of Mutual of Omaha’s Wild Kingdom will premiere on Animal Planet beginning Sunday, March 11, 2007 at 7p. The first episode is a special titled Magnificent Moments, which features featuring highlights of the most memorable moments of the classic Wild Kingdom series from the 1960s, 70s and 80s. The special will be followed by new regular episodes of the series. The series is produced for Animal Planet by JWM Productions.
Warner Bros. has launched the website for the CGI animated Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles feature film ( http://tmnt.warnerbros.com/). Slated for release on March 23, 2007, the movie features the voices of Patrick Stewart, Sarah Michelle Geller and Kevin Smith among others.
In other TMNT news, 4Kids Entertainment Home Video in association with FUNimation Entertainment will release Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles Fast Forward: Future Shellshock on DVD February 6, 2007. The 2-disc DVD set includes 13×30′ episodes of season one of the new animated series, which bowed fall 2006 in the 4Kids TV Saturday morning programming block on Fox.
Crocs, Inc. has completed a license deal with Nickelodeon to introduce an exclusive, limited edition line of Crocs footwear featuring the networks characters including Dora the Explorer and SpongeBob SquarePants. The line is slated to be available at retail in the US in summer 2007
