BBC Worldwide Americas sold more than 200 hours of programming to PBS affiliates across the US following the company’s third annual BBC Showcase Syndication event in New Orleans attended by 59 public television programmers.  Some of the BBC Worldwide titles offered to PBS stations for first and second window programming opportunities include Hustle, Ashes to Ashes, Worst Week of My Life and Black Books in addition to premiere options on Outnumbered, Electric Dreams, Lark Rise to Candleford and Antiques Roadshow among other titles.

~ PRODUCTION & DEVELOPMENT ~

FX handed a pilot order for a superhero drama, Powers centered on two homicide detectives working on cases involving people with extraordinary abilities.  The project is based on a graphic novel series by Brian Michael Bendis and Michael Avon Oeming.

NBC’s casting updates for three pilot projects:

  • Don Johnson makes a possible comeback to television in the NBC drama pilot A Mann’s World.  Johnson stars as a straight Beverly Hills hairstylist and salon owner, who now in his 50s, is struggling to keep pace and be relevant in the midst of a young, Hollywood crowd. The character is further described as similar to Warren Beatty’s character in the feature film Shampoo.  Warner Bros. is behind the project created by Michael Patrick King (Sex and the City).  Johnson last appeared in HBO’s Eastbound and Down and was a regular cast member in the series Just Legal in 2005.  NBC also tapped Taylor Kinney (Vampire Diaries) as a young, hip stylist at the salon.
  • NBC tagged Russell Hornsby (Lincoln Heights) and Bitsie Tulloch (Quarterlife) for its drama pilot Grimm, created as a fantasy-style cop drama incorporating characters from Grimm’s Fairy Tales.  David Greenwalt (Profit) and Jim Kouf (Angel) developed the project about a cop named Nick (David Giuntoli) who starts to see some humans as animals/beasts and decides his destiny is to protect society from them. Hornsby will play Nick’s partner and Tulloch his love interest.  Sean Hayes and Todd Milliner are also executive producing.
  • David Krumholtz (Numb3rs) landed a co-starring role on NBC’s 1963 period drama pilot Playboy.  Krumholtz will play the general manager of the Playboy Club in Chicago who is described as a young Albert Brooks-type bottom line guy.  Already cast in Playboy are Amber Heard, Naturi Naughton and Laura Benanti as Playboy bunnies.  Additionally, Krumholtz is working on a half-hour, single-camera comedy for FX titled Igotchaback about an aspiring music industry manager who is repping an aging rap star. Krumholtz is executive producing and may star in the project.

Comedian T.J. Miller cast in one of the leading roles in CBS’ comedy pilot, The Assistants.  T.J. will play “D.J.” one of four assistants who are hired by a celebrity couple; the other three co-stars have not been cast yet.  Tucker Cawley (Everybody Loves Raymond, Parks and Recreation) will executive produce with Eric and Kim Tannenbaum of The Tannenbaum Co.  CBS Studios is also producing.

For Shonda Rhimes’ latest pilot project for ABC titled Damage Control, about real-life PR expert Judy Smith, Tony Goldwyn was added to the cast.  The project is about a crisis management pro (Kerry Washington) and her dysfunctional staff.  Goldwyn’s character is President Fitzgerald Grant.  Other actors previously cast in Damage Control include Guillermo Diaz, Columbus Short, Henry Ian Cusick and Katie Lowes.  Rhimes and Betsy Beers will serve as executive producers with Judy Smith as co-executive producer.  ABC Studios is producing.

Casting Call: BET Networks teaming with star choreographer LaurieAnn Gibson and the executive producers of Making The Band for the casting of a new dance competition show for BET.  The Laurieann Gibson Project is searching for the next big dance star who will win $50,000.  Two more auditions are scheduled for March 2 in New York and March 5 in Los Angeles.  Visit www.bet.com/laurieanncasting  for more details on the auditions.
