Good morning. It’s Monday, February 20, 2006 and this is your first early morning Kids! briefing.
Video game publisher/developer Atari on Friday announced the “implementation of its corporate action plan.” The restructuring comes as no surprise with less-than-stellar financial results, followed by the egress of its CFO, Diane Baker, who had been with the company for just weeks. The company also confirmed that it will cut its workforce by 20%, including selling off Atari’s US in-house studio. Prior to the announcement, Chairman/CEO Bruno Bonnell gave an interview to the UK videogame-trade magazine MCV in which he foreshadowed the restructuring explaining, “… we had decided in December [2005] that we should refocus our creativity efforts on external studio, rather than internal development.”

In the UK, Turner’s Toonami channel is getting an overhaul with a new on-air look and a growing cartoon programming grid that will include live-action shows beginning Monday, March 6. On the same day the network moves to channel 602 on Sky EPG, which will put it right next to Cartoon Network UK. Live action series joining the K6-12 targeted channel include Life With Derek, Blue Water High (an Australian series), and Parker Lewis Can’t Lose as well as Backyard Science and Stencil, a daily sports show that will focus on surfing/skateboarding/BMX/break dancing. To support the channel overhaul Mediacom has purchased time (30 and 60 second spots) on kid-focused channels including Nickelodeon and Trouble. Toonami will simultaneously launch a new website. In other Turner UK news, March 6 will also see the launch of Boomerang +1, which will be followed by the debut later this year of the Cartoon Network Too channel.
As we emerge from 2006 American International Toy Fair week here in NYC, there’s news from Japan that The Computer Entertainment Supplier’s Association, organizers of the Tokyo Games Show, will hold the event on September 22-24, 2006, at the Chiba Prefecture’s Makuhari Messe convention centre. This time around the show will include a mobile game area. Attendance at the show is expected to set a new record; last year’s fall show had more than 170,000 visitors, up from an all-time low in fall 2001 of just under 130,000. As in the past, the first day will be trade only.
The UK’s ITV has renewed its rights to Miffy and Friends in addition to taking four 30-minute holiday specials from Holland’s Telescreen Distribution. Miffy will air both on its new digital CiTV and on its terrestrial network. Latin America’s Cartoon Network and Greece’s Alter Channel also purchased the cartoon K2-5 series. The show will also be released by Rubinstein in Benelux by Warner Home Video in Scandinavia. Telescreen Distribution holds the European, Middle Eastern, African and South American rights to Miffy and Friends according to C21.
MARKETING/LICENSING
JAKKS Pacific, Inc. has signed a worldwide licensing agreement with MGM Consumer Products to develop, manufacture and distribute a line of toys based on the Rocky franchise, as in the movies Rocky, Rocky II, Rocky III, Rocky IV, Rocky V and the upcoming movie Rocky Balboa (aka Rocky VI). JAKKS’ Boys Action division will develop collectible action figures, play sets, accessories, role-play items and sports toys based on Rocky and the other characters from the movies, to coincide with the 30-year anniversary and DVD release of Rocky, which will be followed by the holiday 2006 theatrical release of Rocky Balboa.

On its homepage and in an email to newsletter subscribers, Cherry Skateboards founder Emilie Oliver announced that come April 1 of this year, “Due to personal and financial reasons,” the company, the sole female-owned skateboard company, will close its doors. Oliver, both a skateboarder and designer, established the Colorado-based company in 2003 as a place where female designers could develop board graphics and apparel designs. As well, the company supported other female-centric boarding events including the Vans Warped Tour and Op Girls Learn To Ride competitions as well as skating clinics and schools. Oliver hopes to keep the website operating as a girl skate site with more information on that TBA. How ironic that the company has to shutter now, just as women are shining at the Olympics.
