Yes, it has all of the same information as before and a little bit more, but hopefully it’s easier to navigate, easier to grab our editions through RSS or share/email them with others, watch Cynopsis in our daily video form, subscribe and/or unsubscribe, find our Facebook, LinkedIn and Twitter home pages, flip through our archives, and find news on our homepage that was not included within our editions. OWN: The Oprah Winfrey Network picked up the rights to air the independent documentary film Family Affair written and produced by Chico David Colvard. The film is the first of many to be part of OWN’s Documentary Film Club, established to highlight inspiring and entertaining documentary films. Recently, Family Affair, exploring the family history of Colvard, attracted acclaim during its world premiere at the 2010 Sundance Film Festival. Late on Friday, NBC Universal and Sony Pictures Television finalized an agreement giving the upcoming weekday syndicated show The Nate Berkus Show a slot on NBC’s 10 O&Os. Apparently, terms of the deal include paying Sony an undisclosed amount as well as allowing Sony a portion of the advertising revenue. The Nate Berkus Show, produced by Harpo Productions, Inc., launches this fall and is helmed by design guru Nate Berkus who has been a frequent guest on The Oprah Winfrey Show since 2003. The show will now be available on NBC stations in New York, Los Angeles, Chicago, Philadelphia, Dallas, San Francisco, Washington, D.C., San Diego, Miami and Hartford. ~ PRODUCTION & DEVELOPMENT ~
Spike TV is working with Thom Beers and Philip Segal of Original Productions, on a new weekly 30m series that would become the network’s first late-night series. The yet-to-be-titled show, sporting two hosts and various correspondents, will feature a combo of talk and comedy with “manformation” for today’s males. The show would also highlight everyday guys who have found themselves in extraordinary situations such as a former stock broker who becomes a Green Beret. More details about the show will be forthcoming later. Spike TV also announced a third season pick up for the series 1000 Ways to Die also produced by Original Productions, a FremantleMedia Company. ABC Family handed a 10-episode order to the 30m multi-camera comedy Melissa & Joey, headlined by Melissa Joan Hart and Joey Lawrence. The series will premiere this year and centers on Mel, a former wild child of a political family who is now a politician. Following a scandal involving her sister and brother-in-law, Mel takes charge of her young niece and nephew and hires Joe (Lawrence) as her live-in “manny.” The comedy is written by David Kendall and Bob Young who also serve as executive producers along with Paula Hart, Melissa Joan Hart and Joey Lawrence. CNN’s senior political correspondent Candy Crowley will become the anchor of CNN’s hour-long Sunday morning political interview and analysis show, State of the Union. Crowley will begin her new anchor stint this Sunday at 9a, taking over from chief national correspondent John King who launched the program a year ago. King will soon anchor a new weekday 7p program on CNN premiering this month. Crowley began with CNN in 1987. ABC okayed a single-camera comedy titled How to Be a Better American from ABC Studios and writers/executive producers Steven Cragg and Brian Bradley (Scrubs). The plot is about a father who tries to better himself and drags his reluctant family along. Furthermore, ABC late last week approved an untitled multi-camera comedy written and helmed by writer/comedian Dana Gould. Warner Bros. Television and 3 Arts will produce the project centered on Dana (Gould) a high school guidance counselor and father of two young kids who is torn between his father’s version of parenting and his wife’s very liberal ideals. Gould executive produces with Tom Lassally and Dave Becky of 3 Arts. CBS gains a game show pilot after FOX declined the project based on the British game show The Cube. Neil Patrick Harris, star of CBS’ How I Met Your Mother was tapped to host the pilot and will be one of the show’s executive producers. TBS gave a cast-contingent pilot order to a 60m comedy Glory Daze from director Walt Becker. The plot is about four frosh guys in the 1980s who pledge a fraternity at a Wisconsin college. Becker will write the pilot along with Michael LeSieur. ~ RATINGS ~

EMAILS TO THE EDITOR: (this section will run just today unless we receive new comments; one additional comment rec’d over the weekend is below) In response to this Editorial in the 1/28/10 edition of Cynopsis: NATPE 2010, in my opinion … as I walk around NATPE every year, people always stop and ask me, “So, what’s the buzz? What’s the big story this year?” Typically there’s one major story breaking the first morning that has everyone chattering and prognosticating all week. Unfortunately, in the last handful of years at NATPE, the big story that first day has been … well, NATPE. Convention floor vs. suites (which is now ballroom vs. suites), what buyers didn’t come this year, overall attendee levels, and the mortality of this annual gathering. It’s easy to say “NATPE is on its way out,” “surely this will be the last year” and “do we really need a NATPE?” And yet, it’s still here. Yes, it’s different than it was 10 years ago, which is different than it was 20 years ago. It’s much smaller, but this year it was also very focused. Those who came to Las Vegas did so with a purpose and a direction to get things done, and they did. The NATPE Board would like to guide and strengthen NATPE with a digital agenda, though on its own NATPE is evolving in another direction – international, as evidenced in part by the strong and large contingency from Latin America. On the third day of the convention this year, most of the people I know who work on the domestic side have headed home. Those still here are the internationals, taking meetings, making deals. Next year’s convention is in Miami, further bolstering the international attendance from Latin America and Puerto Rico, and there is chatter the Europeans will find their way to Florida as well. That being the case, wouldn’t it be interesting if NATPE could fully evolve into essentially a US-based MIPCOM, a market known for the intense focus of buyers and sellers, and one where a lot of deals are done. If NATPE can find its sea legs in Miami, then perhaps US buyers will find a reason to return to this annual show. And by the way, the guys suggesting a strict T-shirt and shorts dress code for the Miami conference, I concur. But that’s just my opinion. (Maybe you agree, maybe you think I’m an idiot, or a combination of the two. If you’d like to comment, please do and I’ll post a representative group here starting tomorrow. Send your comment to me at [email protected] and put Email to the Editor in the subject line.) Newest Comment in response: I’ve attended and maintained a booth at NATPE in Las Vegas, San Francisco, New Orleans and Las Vegas again. Once back in Las Vegas after New Orleans, NATPE lost its luster, not completely because of the host location, but because of the NATPE organization as a whole. After watching tumbleweeds in aisles for 3 years, I like many others became incensed at NATPE’s brazen “everybody’s here” mentality. Go to the MIPs – those are the events where everybody attends. Rick and his crew are out of touch with the independents, forgetting us is a mistake. Their arrogance is an overpriced, under attended event that has met with anger from the larger sales community. Small focused conferences and well orchestrated big conventions are where business gets done. Our business is changing – too bad NATPE thinks changing to Miami will mask its more serious flaws. — Richard Propper/President Solid Entertainment, Co-Founder WESTDOC
