Good Morning, it’s Monday, February 19, 2007 and this is your first early morning briefing.
Currently in draft form only, there’s a report that may find its way from the FCC to Congress that suggests the Commission should be given the authority to regulate violence on television in much the same way indecency is regulated. The draft report also suggests the FCC’s authority should reach beyond just the broadcasters, and regulate cable and satellite television on this issue as well. The Commission Chairman Kevin Martin and Michael Copps are both pushing for the draft to get the necessary three votes within the FCC to bring it to Congress. The proposed regulation raises many questions including defining violence in general, defining violence as it applies to children, whether or not the regulations would include all television or exclude news and documentaries, and would Saving Private Ryan ever be allowed on television again?
