  • February 21: Glee will air its winter finale at 8p; new episodes of Glee are back April 10 at 8p

This fall, Tribune’s talk show The Bill Cunningham Show will air on The CW at 3p nationwide, replacing Dr. Drew’s Lifechangers which is currently airing in the same afternoon time slot.  Cunningham, who is a Cincinnati-based nationally syndicated talk radio deejay has been hosting the conflict-style talk show based at Manhattan’s Penn Station since September.  The show is presently carried on Tribune’s owned TV stations in all 19 markets in addition to three other stations.          

HISTORY’s season three bow of Swamp People on Thursday at 9p drew in 4.7 million total viewers, a +21% hike over the season two premiere in addition to 2.5 million among both A18-49 and A25-54.   The network also premiered new series Mudcats following at 10p which delivered 3.0 million total viewers; 1.4 million with A18-49; and 1.6 million among A25-54. 

On February 7, National Geographic Channel premiered Doomsday Preppers at 9p and 10p which tallied close to 4.3 million total viewers and 2.3 million with A25-54 over the two-hour period.  The series’ debut gave the network its highest-rated Tuesday night telecasts ever. Doomsday Preppers, with ten total epsiodes airs on Tuesdays at 9p.

Pop singer and film star icon, Whitney Houston, 48 died on Saturday in Beverly Hills, CA.  Ms. Houston was in Los Angeles to attend a pre-Grammy Awards party hosted by Clive Davis, the founder of Arista Records and the man considered to be her pop mentor.  Throughout her singing career, Ms. Houston used her lush, three octave singing range to achieve hit after hit and her 1987 album “Whitney” became the first female album to debut at #1 on the Billboard Charts.   Ms. Houston won numerous awards for her singing talent including six Grammys Awards.  In 1992, she transitioned to becoming a movie star starting with her first film role in The Bodyguard, followed by other starring roles in Waiting to Exhale (1995) and The Preacher’s Wife (1996).  Ms. Houston also played the role of the Fairy Godmother in a TV movie version of Cinderella (1997) for which she was nominated for a Primetime Emmy Award and most recently she had a role in the upcoming film Sparkle currently in post-production and considered a comeback vehicle for the singer and actress.  Ms. Houston also won a Primetime Emmy in 1986 for her Outstanding Individual Performance in a Variety or Music Program for The 28th Annual Grammy Awards on CBS.  From her marriage to Bobby Brown, Ms. Houston has one surviving daughter, Bobbi Kristina now 18.   Ms. Houston is also survived by her mother.  In addition to her many awards, BET honored Ms. Houston with a Lifetime Achievement Award in 2001.  Debra L. Lee, Chairman/CEO of BET Networks released this statement upon: “We are all simply heartbroken by the sudden passing of Whitney Houston.  She was among the greatest artists of our time. She was an icon, trailblazer, international phenomenon — an incomparable talent that will forever be missed. Our prayers and condolences go out to her daughter, mother and her entire family. We will always love her.”

Several networks will be honoring the late Whitney Houston with specials tonight and later this week:  BET’s 106 & Park will pay tribute to the singer’s life and legacy in a three-hour episode beginning at 6p tonight; Lifetime is airing The Bodyguard tonight at 8p; VH1 has three specials including the VH1 News Special: Whitney Houston: Death of a Diva tonight at 930p, and on Thursday the VH1 News Presents Whitney Houston’s Greatest Moments at 11p as well as next week’s special 100 Greatest Women in Music that will include an updated salute to Ms. Houston; VH1 Classics will air the tribute Whitney A-to-Z on Tuesday at 1p and again at 8p; and OWN: Oprah Winfrey Network will offer the two-hour special Remembering Whitney: The Oprah Interview this Thursday at 9p.

~ PRODUCTION & DEVELOPMENT ~

Real-life spouses and producers Ben Falcone and Melissa McCarthy (Bridesmaids) sold an untitled comedy pilot to CBS.  The project will star Falcone who will also co-write and McCarthy (who also stars on CBS’ Mike & Molly) will serve as EP.  The plot is about a 37-year old single guy (Falcone) who loses everything in the real estate collapse and finds himself back home in the house he grew up in and living with his parents.  Larry Dorf is also a co-writer.

Becki Newton (Ugly Betty) will star in a comedy pilot ordered by FOX titled The Goodwin Games.  The plot is about a father who wills his fortune to his three children only if they agree to his terms.  Newton will play one of the leads.  She also is ready to begin her recurring role on CBS’ How I Met Your Mother.  HIMYM’s Carter Bays, Craig Thomas and Chris Harris are all writers and EPs on The Goodwin Games. 

Roseanne Barr and John Goodman (both former stars of Roseanne) are reuniting on the previously-announced multi-camera comedy pilot for NBC called Downwardly Mobile.  The project is co-created by Barr and she stars as the head of a mobile home park where she acts as the surrogate mother to the residents.  Goodman will play one of the residents.  Eric Gilliland (Roseanne) is the other co-creator. 

Workplace comedy series Sullivan and Son was given an approving nod from TBS.  The comedy stars comedian Steve Byrne and is executive produced by Vince Vaughn, Peter Billingsley and showrunner Rob Long.  Byrne will also serve as producer on the series which is produced by Vaughn’s Wild West Picture Show Productions in association with Warner Horizon Television.  TBS has ordered 10 episodes which are slated to debut this summer.

Upcoming period drama Gilded Lilys on ABC from EP Shonda Rhimes cast Blythe DannerMadeline Zima and Sarah Bolger also landed roles in the drama set in 1895 about New York’s first luxury hotel.  

HBO’s Boardwalk Empire tapped Stephen Root to join the drama’s cast in the recurring role as Gaston Means, a forger, swindler and murder suspect who became a Special Investigator for the US Dept. of Justice under Attorney General Harry Daugherty (Christopher McDonald).

Known best for his film roles, Ryan Phillippe has joined the cast of CBS’ drama pilot previously titled Golden Boy.  The project from Nicholas Wootton and Greg Berlanti tracks one cop’s meteoric rise from officer to detective to police commissioner. 

James Wolk (Lone Star) landed a role on USA Network’s six-episode drama series Political Animals set in Washington, D.C. from Greg Berlanti.  USA Network will roll out the new series this summer.  Wolk is currently appearing in ABC’s Happy Endings.

Thursday A18-49 Analysis:  FOX was rock steady Thursday delivering a 4.0/11 among A18-49, according to final national ratings from Nielsen.  FOX hit #1 at 8p with American Idol at 5.8/16 followed by CBS’ comedies The Big Bang Theory and Rob at an average of 4.5/13.  ABC’s Grey’s Anatomy topped at 9p with a 4.0/10 and CBS’ Person of Interest was next at 3.3/9.  CBS had a turn in first place during 10p with The Mentalist at 3.0/8 and ABC slid to second place with Private Practice at 2.2/6.

Former producer of HBO Documentary Films, Julie Anderson was hired by WNET, parent company of New York’s public television stations THIRTEEN and WLIW21 and operator of NJTV to become Executive Producer/Documentaries and Development for THIRTEEN.  Julie will manage documentary limited series in addition to single documentaries and develop new programming ideas.  Julie will also be involved in fundraising, supervising production and post-production, delivery and distribution as well as broadcast and non-broadcast issues of production.  She will report to Stephen Segaller, VP/Programming.

Jim Barnum advances to VP/Deputy General Counsel for Hubbard Broadcasting, Inc. where he will additionally serve in this role for the company’s operating companies.  Jim will continue to offer legal advice to Hubbard Broadcasting’s management team and its news operations in the areas of programming content and intellectual property matters, labor and employment areas as well as compliance with state and federal regulations. 

Under a new expansion, Media Storm has opened a new West Coast office in Los Angeles.  Jill Rosenbaum was appointed as Director/Strategy to lead the new office and spearhead new business efforts in Hollywood.  Jill will work with Co-Founder/Managing Partner, Craig Woerz and Managing Director/Operations and Development, Dene Callas in addition to her counterparts in the agency’s South Norwalk, CT and New York City offices.  Furthermore, Media Storm was named agency of record for Open Road Films.
