Good morning. It’s Monday, February 13, 2006 and this is your first early morning Kids! briefing.

It’s Toy Fair Week in New York City:

Cartoon Network Enterprises has awarded Bandai America Incorporated the master toy license for Ben 10, the network’s newly-launched animated action-adventure series.  In July Bandai America will launch its Ben 10 product lineup, including a variety of action figures, vehicles, playsets and role-play toys.  Cartoon Network is also pursuing a licensing program to extend the brand into other categories such as apparel, interactive, publishing and video. 

The LEGO Group and Lucasfilm Ltd. have agreed to extend the license deal for the Star Wars franchise through 2011.  Under the agreement LEGO will to continue to design/release Star Wars themed LEGO sets based on the films as well as the animated series currently in development.  Star Wars was the LEGO Group’s first licensed property when LEGO and Lucasfilm inked the first agreement back in 1999.

On the licensing front, aside from the Star Wars expansion, LEGO will introduce:

  • Six Batman sets through a deal with Warner Bros.
  • Under a master construction toy rights deal with Nickelodeon, three SpongeBob SquarePants sets and two Avatar: The Last Airbender sets.
  • For preschoolers LEGO Duplo adds two characters from Thomas & Friends, Harold the Helicopter and Cranky the Crane, as and two Bob the Builder characters, Sumsy and Scrambler.

This year LEGO will also introduce additions of sets based on its own themes:

  • Mindstorms NXT which includes 32 bit microprocessor and Bluetooth among other features and is PC/Mac compatible (August 2006)
  • EXO-Force is a fantasy/adventure/role-play set “inspired by Manga animation” which combines evil robots with young machine pilots.
  • And new sets for the existing City, Racers, Knight’s Kingdom and Bionicle sets and figures.

DreamWorks Animation SKG has named MGA Entertainment, Inc as master toy and games licensor for its Shrek franchise.  Under the two-year deal MGA has the rights to develop Shrek-themed products for launch in spring 2007, in conjunction with the theatrical release of the third Shrek movie.  MGA plans to produce products across various categories including Dolls and Collectible Figures, Plush, Youth Electronics, Games, Puzzles and Room Decor.

Speed Racer it turning 40 and as part of the celebration Speed Racer Enterprises has teamed up with Art Asylum, Inc. to create a product line based on of the classic Speed Racer animated TV series including toys, collectibles, animated promos, and music.  Art Asylum will create animated promos launching this summer, followed by DVD’s that will be packaged with the new toy line, set for release in fall 2006.  A follow-up soundtrack will be released 4Q 2006, with all new music from current name artists. 

DC Direct unveils both its collectible statues and busts, and a new line created in partnership with Weta Limited, all based on the Warner Bros. movie Superman Returns.  The film is due for release June 30, 2006.  The DC Direct/Weta collectibles were art directed for Weta by Superman Returns director Bryan Singer and includes limited edition, polystone statues that depict moments from the movie.  Under their agreement between DC Direct will distribute product to the US Specialty market and comic book retailers, and Weta will distribute in Australia and New Zealand, while also serving collectors on the internet.  Weta Limited is the merchandise division of Weta Workshop.

Airborne Entertainment has inked an exclusive deal with Harmony Gold that will make the anime series Robotech available to mobile phones from spring 2006.  The Robotech wireless content will feature wallpapers, ringtones and ringbacks, which will be followed shortly by a mobile game.  Airborne Entertainment is a subsidiary of CYBIRD Co., Ltd.

Upper Deck has teamed up with Nike to launch The LeBrons’ figure line based on the TV ads. The line launches this Wednesday via Upper Deck’s online store.  To support the effort, Upper Deck will release 750 sneak-peek versions of the Athlete LeBron figure on Wednesday to coincide with NBA All-Star week.  Each of the vinyl figures will mirror what LeBron will be wearing at the game – red special edition Nike Zoom LeBron III shoes and L23 gear.  Upper Deck plans to release the full series of the four characters (Athlete, Business, Kid and Wise LeBron) in April, with just 1,000 individually numbered pieces of each character to be sold at hobby and specialty shops. 

MORE KIDS STUFF

Union Entertainment and Top Cow Productions have entered into a long-term deal that grants Union the exclusive rights to develop video game titles based on Top Cow’s library of comic book properties. In addition, Union and Top Cow will partner to create new properties that will be developed as comics, video games and feature films. Terms of the deal were not disclosed.  Already in production is The Darkness, with Union in development on other Top Cow properties, including Witchblade, Magdalena, Aphrodite IX, Hunter/Killer and Wanted.  These titles are not for younger kids.

EXECUTIVE MOVES

Don Hahn has been named the interim head of Disney Feature Animation, according to an email sent to employees by new Disney Studios Chairman Dick Cook.  Hahn, a Producer with WDFA, will head up the division until the Disney/Pixar acquisition is completed.

A little game of musical chairs over at Sony BMG Music Entertainment and when the needle is lifted its CEO, Andrew Lack and Chairman of the Board, Rolf Scmidt-Holtz will be sitting in each other’s chair.  Both men were key players in establishing the now 18-month old Sony BMG Music Entertainment joint venture, which will continue to be governed by a Board of Directors consisting of six representatives of Bertelsmann and Sony.  In his new position as CEO, Schmidt-Holtz will have overall management responsibility for the company.  As Chairman of the Board, Lack will lead the company’s public policy and industry initiatives, and take on operating responsibility and oversight for Sony BMG’s feature film business.  The senior management team will also include the CFO, Kevin Kelleher, and a COO who will be appointed shortly.
