Anne Sweeney, Co-Chair, Disney Media Networks and President, Disney/ABC Television Group announced Ben Sherwood is returning to ABC as President/ABC News succeeding David Westin in the position. Ben, who will report to Sweeney, will oversee all editorial and business facets of ABC’s News Division encompassing all ABC News programs on ABC Television Network, ABC News Radio, ABC News.com and ABC News NOW. Previously, Ben had worked at ABC News, first as an associate producer and producer for PrimeTime when he joined in 1989, then later as Executive Producer of ABC’s Good Morning America from 2004 to 2006. Since then, Ben has written numerous journalistic and non-fiction essays published in The New York Times, The Washington Post, Newsweek among other publications and he has authored two novels, The Man Who Ate the 747 (2000) and The Death and Life of Charlie St. Cloud (2004). His other novel, The Man Who Ate the 747 is also being adapted into a major motion picture and a Broadway musical. NBC Universal and Comcast on Friday agreed to a 90-day extension involving their proposed joint venture valued at $30 billion. News of the extension was delivered to the Securities and Exchange Commission through a filing referred to as a pro-forma renewal of the deal. Both Comcast and NBCU had the option of backing out of the deal a year after it was made, unless both sides agreed to an extension for government approvals. Last Friday marked the one year anniversary of the announced agreement in addition to the original filing of the 8K, a form required by the government when public companies make changes involving such moves as mergers and acquisitions that could affect investors. The government has yet to give its final assent to the joint venture and the FCC’s decision could be pitched into early next year, though both companies would like the deal to close by the end of this month. NBCU’s and Comcast’s deal is speculated to be approved though the deal is likely to come with many conditions. NBC cut its full season order of action drama Chase from 22 episodes to 18.
