~ PRODUCTION & DEVELOPMENT ~

ABC okayed a new pilot from Shonda Rhimes, creator of the network’s series Grey’s Anatomy and Private Practice and the new series Off the Map, slated to premiere January 12 at 10p. The new untitled project is about the personal life and career of a professional fixer and her dysfunctional staff. The lead character is based on the well-known crisis management consultant Judy Smith who has worked with such clients as Monica Lewinsky and Michael Vick through their public scandals. Rhimes wrote the pilot and will serve as executive producer along with Betsy Beers. Smith will also be a co-executive producer.

Additionally, ABC is developing a US version of the Canadian series Being Erica which presently airs on ABC’s sister cable network, SOAPnet. ABC Studios will produce the US adaptation and Maggie Friedman was tapped to write the US edition as well as be executive producer. David Fortier and Ivan Schneeberg who head the Toronto-based Temple Street Productions, the company behind the original series, will also executive produce the upcoming ABC version. SOAPnet will premiere the third season of the original Canadian series on January 26 and it also debuted in Canada this past fall. Currently, Being Erica airs in close to 160 countries globally. SOAPnet also will be replaced as a network by Disney Junior at the end of 2011.
