Cyn opsis: Kids!

12/18/06

Good morning. It’s Monday, December 18, 2006 and this is your first early morning Kids! briefing.

Sony Pictures Entertainment set another industry record this weekend with the release of The Pursuit of Happyness, which pushed the studio’s domestic box office receipts for 2006 to upwards of $1.6 billion, the biggest North American take in a single year ever.  SPE trumped its own record set in 2002.  This year has been quite the year for the studio -13 of the 27 movies it released debuted at number one, each drawing opening weekends of $20+ million, and surpassed $3 billion in worldwide ticket sales for its first time.

Warner Bros. Entertainment has unveiled plans to make an $87 million equity investment for 10% of SCi Entertainment Group plc, a video game publisher and parent company of Eidos Interactive.  Additionally, Warner Bros. Home Entertainment Group and SCi have inked a licensing and distribution deal for games based on Warner Bros. Entertainment properties.  Under the deal Warner Bros. Interactive Entertainment granted SCi licenses for the comic book versions of Batman, the Looney Tunes, select Hanna-Barbera titles and TV properties including Loonatics Unleashed, Legion of Super Heroes and The OC.  Meanwhile, Eidos and Warner Bros. Home Entertainment Group has entered into a primary distribution pact under which Warner Bros. Home Entertainment Group will provide warehousing, logistics, merchandising and media buying services in the US to Eidos.

Nintendo has introduced a voluntary Wii Remote wrist strap replacement program (try saying that 10 times fast).  The move comes following reports that wrist strap on some of the Wii Remotes have broken during use, allowing for the unit to take flight from the users hand and sending it hurling towards TVs, onlookers, light fixtures, drinking glasses, and so on.  Users looking to replace the original strap that came with the unit for a newer version must first establish which version of the strap their unit has, because while the Wii consoles have only been available since mid November in the US, the units that shipped from early December already have the newer strap.  Photos of both straps, how to replace a strap and other information, including safety tips, can be found at http://www.nintendo.com/home.

In related news, Nintendo in Japan has ordered a recall of 200,000+ AC adapters of its DS and DS Lite game units.  Nintendo says that the AC adapters can overheat and potentially cause burns, but that there have been no injuries reported.  The recall is currently limited to those DS and DS Lite units sold in Japan and not to units that were shipped out of the country.

Entertainment Rights Plc (ER) has entered into a deal to acquire U.S.-based Classic Media Holdings, Inc. for $210 million. Under the agreement, ER plans to further exploit Classic Media’s existing catalogue to create new revenue streams including the expansion of Classic’s licensing, music and new technology opportunities. ER’s kids/teens/family portfolio of characters and brands, which already features Postman Pat, Rupert Bear and Transformers among others, will grow to include Classic Media’s properties such as Casper the Friendly Ghost, Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer, VeggieTales, Lassie, and The Lone Ranger to name a few. When the deal is completed the group’s combined portfolio will include some 8,700 episodes of programming targeted to a range of demos including preschoolers, kids, teens and families.

NEW PRODUCTION & DEVELOPMENT

Peace Arch Entertainment has picked up the distribution rights outside the US for A West Texas Children’s Story.  Produced by Whitsett Hill Entertainment and directed by Brad Isaacs, who also penned the script, the movie is a coming of age story that follows young teens that set out on an adventure.  On their journey the kids meet up with a range of characters through whom they learn more and more about themselves, each other and the world around them.  The movie just completed production in New Mexico and is being likened to other coming of age films such as Stand By Me and Paper Moon.

MARKETING/LICENSING

Digital music download sales for 2006, specifically through the first 49 weeks of 2006, are up by +67% over 2005, accounting for 525+ million downloads in 2006, up by 173 million over 2005, according to a new Nielsen SoundScan report.  While digital downloads have historically increased year-to-year, this year’s increases were not as significant as in 2005 which grew in download sales by 150% over 2004.

  • For 2006 to date, 54 individual tracks have sold 500,000+ units (only 22 tracks reached that milestone in 2005)
  • As for digital album sales, 29.7 million albums were downloaded so far this year, doubling the category from 2005.
  • 11 albums have sold 100,000+ units digitally this year, whereas only 3 surpassed the 100,000+ mark in 2005.

Nielsen SoundScan tracks digital download sales from more than two-dozen US providers, including digital music retailers. Nielsen SoundScan data coverage represents 95+% of the digital music sales market.

Walt Disney Internet Group has re-launched the UK and French Toontown Online massively multiplayer online (MMO) game websites.  Both the UK and French versions include the introduction of ToonClub, a kid-targeted online community area that offers weekly new updates, special events, competitions, downloads and so on.  In addition new and current subscribers will receive a Toontown welcome package that includes a user guide, poster and stickers as well as ToonClub Magazine, a quarterly publication for members that is set to debut in spring 2007.
