~ MORE STUFF ~

HBO has good news and bad news.  The bad news is the network announced it will end its long-running series Entourage next summer. HBO plans on ordering a curtailed final season, perhaps only six episodes, in an effort to complete the show in 2011. The good news is HBO will be debuting its new drama Boardwalk Empire, produced by Martin Scorsese on September 19.

In a new half-hour series this fall, TLC explores the rarely seen world of plural families as Sister Wives premieres on September 26 at 10p. The series introduces viewers to a husband with multiple wives and their combined 13 children as they attempt to live in a world that shuns their chosen lifestyle. Each episode reveals the inner relationships of a polygamist household and the unexpected closeness between the wives. Sister Wives is produced for TLC by Advanced Medical Productions.

In more news from TLC, the network set the premiere date for Sarah Palin’s Alaska on November 14 at 9p. The docu-series is executive produced by Mark Burnett. In one episode, Kate Gosselin, star of TLC’s Kate Plus 8 along with her kids meet Palin during a camping trip in Alaska.

Animal Planet ordered 10 extra episodes of its new series Confessions: Animal Hoarding after launching the series three weeks ago. The new episodes will air during first quarter 2011. The series is produced for Animal Planet by GRB Entertainment.

E! expands its popular Fashion Police specials into a weekly series hosted by Joan Rivers. The series will serve up a summary each week of celebrity fashions with critiques of who succeeded and who failed. Fashion Police will debut August 30 at 10p with a special one-hour event covering the Primetime Emmy Awards followed by the series’ move to its regular time period starting September 10 at 1030p. Rivers will continue hosting Fashion Police specials associated with the top awards events next year including the Oscars, Golden Globes, SAGs and Grammys. Fashion Police is produced by Comcast Entertainment Studios with Melissa Rivers as Co-Executive Producer.

A&E Network set the premiere date of Teach: Tony Danza for October 1 at 10p. The seven-episode, one-hour series follows actor Danza as he becomes a first-year teacher at Philadelphia Northeast High School, the city’s largest urban high school. Prior to becoming a prolific television actor, Danza earned a degree in History Education. The series will document Danza’s trials and rewards as he teaches a 10th grade English class in addition to helping the football team, the band and the debate team as well as organizing a successful fundraiser for the school. Teach: Tony Danza is produced for A&E by Boutique TV, Inc.

National Geographic Channel (NGC) announced several updates on
current and new series:

  • NGC renewed its series Locked Up Abroad for a fifth season with 10 new episodes slated to premiere in 2011. Additionally, NGC’s season finale of Locked Up Abroad: Panama airing last Wednesday at 10p, averaged a 0.45 rating among A25-54, making it the highest-rated episode since the current season’s premiere. Over the last season, Locked Up Abroad averaged a 0.46 rating with A25-54 and 574,000 total viewers each episode. RAW Television produces.
  • Dog Whisperer with Cesar Millan will premiere is seventh season on October 8 featuring Howie Mandel. MPH Entertainment produces.
  • Explorer: The Third Man Factor will air this special episode of Explorer based on the book, The Third Man Factor: Surviving the Impossible by John Geiger which uses science to investigate the phenomenon of people on the brink of death who claim the presence of a helper who leads them toward survival. NGT produces.
  • Humanly Impossible II will return with a new four-episode season uncovering more amazing human abilities and the science behind them. Atlas Media produces.
  • Taboo VI is back for a seventh season in hi-def taking viewers around the world to explore rituals and customs that are acceptable in some cultures but forbidden, illegal or taboo in others. Each one-hour episode examines one taboo topic. Beyond Productions produces.
  • Ancient X-Files is a new four-part series discovering historic mysteries by looking at unusual artifacts of the ancient world. Wag TV produces.

Planet Green premieres the new original series Dean of Invention as part of its primetime block VERGE, starting October 22 at 10p. In this new eight-episode series, Dean Kamen, the famous inventor who holds 400+ patents including the Segway, the insulin pump and more will become an investigator in search of technologies of the future. The network follows Kamen and correspondent Joanne Colan as they explore emerging technologies in the works today to improve the life of mankind tomorrow. Dean of Invention is produced for Planet Green by @radical.media.

G4 has a new series on tap that counts down the world’s top three toughest of everything in That’s Tough!, opening October 20 at 830p. In each of the eight, half-hour episodes, That’s Tough ushers viewers around the globe looking at a variety of categories to find out which is the “toughest” from elite military special forces to which mountain is the hardest to scale and which bank robber is the most fearless. That’s Tough! is from Super Delicious, LLC.

Next Tuesday, Retirement Living TV (RLTV) premieres a new travel show Stanley On The Go at 8p hosted by media personality Stanley Siegel. Stanley On The Go travels with Stanley across five continents as he looks at sights in an unexpected way, such as the Eiffel Tower in Paris though through the eyes of Guy de Maupassant. In upcoming episodes, Stanley escorts viewers to Pamplona, Spain for the annual Running of the Bulls to Patagonia, Chile among other destinations.

Bravo’s series debut of The Real Housewives of D.C. last Thursday at 9p attracted 1.0 million A18-49 viewers and 1.6 million total viewers. Following at 10p, the season one finale of Bethenny Getting Married? drew even higher numbers at 1.1 million among A18-49 and 1.9 million total viewers.

Lorene Yarnell, who with former partner Robert Shields made up the mime/dance/comedy team Shields and Yarnell, died on July 29 at her home in Sandefjord, Norway. She was 66. Along with Mr. Shields, her husband at the time, Ms. Yarnell headlined the television variety show Shields and Yarnell which aired on CBS in 1977-1978. Ms. Yarnell and Mr. Shields later starred together in “Broadway Follies” in 1981 at the Nederlander Theater in New York. The show closed after one performance following poor reviews. Ms. Yarnell also appeared in the Mel Brook 1987 film Spaceballs playing the robot Dot Matrix. Later in the mid-1980’s Ms. Yarnell and Mr. Shields divorced. Survivors include her fourth husband, Bjorn Jansson and a brother.

~ PRODUCTION & DEVELOPMENT ~

A&E Network approved a four-hour special television event titled Beyond Scared Straight! from executive producer Arnold Shapiro and based on his Oscar and Emmy-winning documentary Scared Straight!. The new four-part series premieres in Winter 2011 and will document innovative approaches to juvenile crime prevention in prisons across the nation. The stand-alone one-hour episodes will each profile a different US prison program and follow four or five at-risk teens and pre-teens. Beyond Scared Straight! is produced by Arnold Shapiro Productions for A&E.

A&E Network also ordered a documentary pilot titled The Unexplained from producer/director Doug Liman (The Bourne Ultimatum, Mr. and Mrs. Smith). The documentary will take a look at strange phenomena and real-life paranormal experiences. Air Extreme is producing for A&E.

Science Channel is teaming with film/TV star Wilmer Valderrama and his company WV Enterprises and executive producer Tom Forman of RelativityREAL to produce Bugging Out, a new series offering an up-close look at the amazing world of insects. The series will premiere in 2011. Before that, Science Channel will air a special preview of the series on October 19 at 9p.

Science Channel further announced it made an exclusive development deal with science fiction writer Nick Sagan, the son of astrophysicist and television host Carl Sagan. The network’s production team will work with Sagan as he hosts and develops upcoming series and specials for Science Channel.

MTV offers up two new scripted original series next year:

  • Teen Wolf, a new adaptation of the original hit film, begins production in October on 12 one-hour episodes in Atlanta. Teen Wolf is a co-production with MGM.
  • Skins, a new US version of the hit UK series featuring an ensemble cast of teens, begins production later this month on 10 one-hour episodes in Toronto. Skins was created by the father-son team, Bryan Elsley and Jamie Brittain at Stormdog Films. Elsley will write and executive produce the US adaptation.

MTV additionally announced a new cast mate is on board its series Jersey Shore as Snooki’s long time friend, Deena Nicole Cortese has joined the series currently in production in Seaside Heights, NJ.

Jane Badler, who played a part on the original V series is joining the cast of ABC’s present series V as a recurring guest star. Badler’s character Diana is the mother of Anna (Morena Baccarin) who is the new leader of the Vs. Badler’s role begins during the season two premiere. V is produced by HDFilms in association with Warner Bros. Television.

Investigation Discovery has two half-hour reality competition series set in prisons in development: one is tentatively titled Talent Behind Bars, a talent-based competition series from producer Mark Burnett described as similar to FOX’s American Idol. The show will feature people who have been convicted of non-violent crimes giving them a chance to show off their talent and maybe get a break in life. Investigation Discovery has a new development deal with Mark Burnett. The second half-hour series, Dancing Behind Bars, is like ABC’s Dancing with the Stars featuring the dancing moves of inmates.

Casting Call: Sean De Simone Casting and QVC are seeking new hosts to join the shopping network’s current on-air team based at the network’s suburban Philadelphia studios. Prospective hosts should have a background in television, internet broadcasts, radio, trade shows or live events. Ideal candidates must be energetic, intelligent and enthusiastic with a natural curiosity and have a passion and drive for sales in addition to being a quick thinker and good listener. Hosts should be friendly, credible, entertaining, sincere and sophisticated with a sense of style and fashion. Thursday  A18-49 Analysis: UNIV had the winning lineup Thursday night at 1.7/6 A18-49, according to final national ratings from Nielsen. CBS opened primetime in the lead with Big Brother at 2.4/9 while ABC’s Wipeout and UNIV’s Hasta que el Dinero Nos Separe tied for #2 at 1.9/7 each. At 9p, UNIV won with Soy Tu Duena at 2.2/7 followed by a tie between ABC’s Rookie Blue and FOX’s So You Think You Can Dance at 1.8/6 apiece. Then at 10p, CBS’ The Mentalist repeat had the edge at 1.3/4 and a third tie for second place occurred between ABC’s Boston Med and UNIV’s La Rosa de Guadalupe with both at 1.2/4.
