~ MORE GOOD STUFF ~

On Sunday at the Television Critics Association tour, ABC revealed the upcoming eighth season of series Desperate Housewives will be its last.  Marc Cherry created the series which is produced by ABC Studios.  ABC further said the season 13 celebrity cast of Dancing with the Stars will be unveiled in a live announcement August 29 during an episode of Bachelor Pad.  Show hosts Tom Bergeron and Brooke Burke will host the live event.  Dancing with the Stars returns September 19 at 8p with a two-hour premiere.  On September 20, a one-hour Dancing with the Stars: Meet the Cast will air followed by the debut of Dancing with the Stars the Results Show at 8p.

FOX detailed several announcements Friday morning at its Television Critics Association Press Tour in Los Angeles:

  • New competition series The X Factor, hosted by Steve Jones, will premiere over two nights on September 21 and 22 at 8p both nights. The X Factor is from Syco Television and FremantleMedia North America.  Pepsi, the premier partner of the show, said the winner (s) of the first season will be featured in a Pepsi commercial slated to air on NBC during Super Bowl XLVI next February.
  • Seth MacFarlane (Family guy, American Dad) is partnering with Carl Sagan’s creative team who worked on the original Cosmos series – writer/producer Ann Druyan and astrophysicist Steven Soter to develop the new 13-episode docu-series, Cosmos: A Space-Time Odyssey.  The new series is hosted by astrophysicist Neil deGrasse Tyson and will be added to FOX’s schedule in 2013. Cosmos Studios is producing.
  • Trace Adkins and Kristin Chenoweth will co-host the second annual American Country Awards, airing live on FOX from Las Vegas on December 5 at 8p.

Soon after launching its second season this summer, TNT renewed Rizzoli & Isles for a third season from Warner Horizon Television.  TNT ordered 15 episodes of the series scheduled to premiere in summer 2012.  The series’ current second season episodes air on Mondays at 10p through September 12.  The series will be back with new episodes to finish season two in November and December.

At the Television Critics’ Association press tour on Saturday, FX president John Landgraf released several updates, including news of his contract renewal for three more years. Other network announcements include:

  • FX Canada will launch with Rogers Media on November 1 as a digital service carrying FX original series, US acquired movies and series and other original Canadian programming and sports events.
  • FX renewed the comedy Wilfred starring Elijah Wood for a second season; the comedy Louie for a third season with 13-episodes; and It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia was picked up for seasons eight and nine.  The Sunny renewal deal also includes an option for a tenth season.
  • FX Productions made a three-year exclusive TV deal with production company RCG which is operated by Sunny stars/executive producers Rob McElhenney, Charlie Day and Glenn Howerton.

Season four of MTV’s Jersey Shore, with the cast in Italy, opened Thursday night with a record 8.8 million total viewers and posting an 8.2 rating among P12-34.  The season launch tallied the largest audience ever for an MTV season premiere and also a +4% bump over the season three debut of Jersey Shore on January 6, 2011 with 8.45 million total viewers.  Among P12-34, the season four premiere averaged 6.5 million viewers, the same amount as the third season debut.

Last Wednesday’s season finale of National Geographic Channel’s Lock Up Abroad at 10p, delivered 1.0 million with the A25-54 demo as well as 1.6 million total viewers.

~ DISTRIBUTION, CLEARANCE & CARRIAGE ~

In another theatrical film acquisition deal, FX picked up the commercial television premiere rights to 20th Century Fox’s Rise of the Planet of the Apes, opening this past weekend with $54.0 million at the domestic box office.  FX also acquired Warner Bros.’ Crazy Stupid Love.

RLTV, the network targeting adults 50+ made a carriage agreement with Massillon Cable TV Inc. for the channel to be on Massillon’s Basic Plus service.

Thursday A18-49 Analysis: CBS had the winning lineup Thursday night at 1.8/6 with the A18-49 viewers, according to final national ratings from Nielsen.  ABC opened primetime at 8p in first place with Wipeout at 2.0/7 while FOX’s So You Think You Can Dance and Univision’s Teresa each delivered a 1.7/6 to share #2. CBS took over at 9p with Big Brother at 2.8/8 and Univision was next with La Fuerza del Destino at 1.7/5.  ABC was back in the winner’s seat during 10p with Rookie Blue at 1.3/4 and CBS’ The Mentalist repeat and NBC’s Law & Order: SVU encore tied for #2 at 1.1/3 apiece.
