~ MORE GOOD STUFF ~

This fall, former NBC News anchor and author Tom Brokaw heads a new series on the Military Channel titled The Brokaw Files debuting October 16 at 10p.  The series highlights stories from Brokaw’s broadcasting career from Ronald Reagan’s final interview in office to a modern-day look at Normandy’s beaches 40 years after D-Day.  Each episode offers new interviews and perspectives from Brokaw as well as personal stories he’s never shared relating to each piece.  The Brokaw Files is produced exclusively for the Military Channel by NBC News’ Peacock Productions. 

TLC and Discovery Fit & Health go back to school in the new series, High School Moms that debuts on TLC this Sunday at 8p with an encore airing on Discovery Fit & Health August 16 at 8p.  The six-part series goes inside Florence Crittenton High School in Denver that caters to teen moms or moms-to-be as they balance schoolwork and diapers.   High School Moms is produced for both TLC and Discovery Fit & Health by Rize USA. 

In another new series, TLC will go inside the religion and lifestyle of the Amish/Mennonites when Breaking Amish premieres September 9 at 10p.  The series follows five young people who have chosen to leave their Amish/Mennonite communities to pursue their dreams of a new life in New York City.  The nine-episode series is produced by Hot Snakes Media for TLC.

Logo examines adoption on a different level with the new docu-series The Baby Wait from DiGa’s Tony DiSanto and Liz Gateley, the television producers and MTV execs behind Teen Mom and 16 and Pregnant among other series.  The Baby Wait focuses on the adoption journey with emphasis on the period where the birth mom has the option to take her child back from the prospective adoptive family.  Each episode follows a new adoption case offering perspectives from the birth mom and the adoptive couple.   The one-hour six-episode series premieres October 30 at 10p.

A second season of docu-series Be Good Johnny Weir debuts on Logo September 17 at 10p.  The series tags along with Johnny Weir, the three-time US National Figure Skating Champion and World Medalist in ten half-hour episodes.  The series is produced and co-financed by Original Media.

MTV approved a second season of Snooki & JWoww and the network also set the sixth season premiere of Jersey Shore on October 4 at 10p.  MTV will also bow the new scripted series Underemployed on October 16 and new docu-series Catfish on November 12 that is paired with the second season of World of Jenks.  MTV further renewed the hidden-camera series Money From Strangers for a second season.

Exclusive to Cynopsis: MTV2 handed a second season to Nitro Circus Live, the series featuring the 17-time X Games medalist Travis Pastrana and his crew who participate in acts that are part extreme sports and part daredevil tricks.  The second season of Nitro Circus Live will be back on the network in early 2013.  On the heels of the second season pickup of the series, this Wednesday the group’s first feature length film, Nitro Circus The Movie 3-D opens.  Tonight, MTV2 will promote the upcoming second season of the series and the movie with a Nitro Circus Live season one marathon hosted by Travis and his crew from 4p to 7p.  Then on Tuesday, Travis and the Nitro Circus will celebrate the premiere of their movie at LA Live in Los Angeles giving fans autographs and photos as well as a special motocross demonstration.  Footage from Tuesday’s event will appear in a new episode of MTV2’s What’s Good airing this Thursday at 11p. 

National Geographic Channels (NGC) renewed its series Wicked Tuna for a second run.  The series, produced by Pilgrim Studios, sails with New England fishermen who catch bluefin tuna.  The new season is set to premiere in the US and internationally in early 2013.

~ DISTRIBUTION, CARRIAGE & CLEARANCE ~

NBC Sports Group made a multi-year deal to extend coverage of the French Open.  The deal has NBC Sports covering the Grand Slam tennis event through 2024 and the deal also includes expanded digital rights and 10 more hours of coverage on NBC. 

Steve Bellamy, founder of the Tennis Channel and the Ski Channel is adding a third sports-themed VOD network to his repertoire as the Surf Channel launches in mid-September, per THR.  The Surf Channel will feature beach, water and board sports programming and be available free-to-consumer via cable, satellite, telco and digital.  Distribution has been secured with Comcast, Cox Communications, DirecTV, Dish Network and Filmon.com making the new network available to 20 million US households at launch.

~ PRODUCTION & DEVELOPMENT ~

Syfy inked a deal with filmmaker M. Night Shyamalan (The Sixth Sense, Signs, Unbreakable) and TV EP/show-runner Marti Noxon (Buffy the Vampire Slayer, Mad Men, Fright Night) to produce a scripted pilot project, Proof.  Shyamalan and Noxon will co-write the project and be the EPs.  Ashwin Rajan, head of Shyamalan’s Blinding Edge label will also be an EP.  Universal Cable Productions will produce with Shyamalan directing the pilot.  The plot of Proof centers on the son of a billionaire tech genius who offers a large reward for anyone who can find proof of life after death. 

In other Syfy news, the network approved a new series pilot called High Moon, an adaptation of the novel, The Lotus Caves by John Christopher.  Production on the 90-minute pilot will likely commence in Vancouver this fall by Reunion Pictures.  The Halmi Company will distribute the project worldwide outside of Canada.  High Moon is set in the future where countries of Earth have established colonies on the Moon to mine its resources. 

Nat Geo WILD commissioned the series Spoiled Rotten Pets hosted by Beth Stern, who is also the host of the HGTV series Mom Caves and the author of Oh My Dog.  The new series features examples of pets that are completely spoiled by their owners.  Pictures This Television is producing the six-part series which begins production in September.

A trio of new series will be joining VH1’s lineup:  Grand River Singers Project follows a young adult choir; Black Ink is about a prosperous Harlem tattoo shop; and Miss You Much is a pop culture show hosted by Catherine Reitman.  Miss You Much is joining returning series Best Week Ever for a new Friday night block beginning in January.  In addition, VH1 picked up a feature-length documentary Something From Nothing: The Art of Rap from Ice-T for its Rock Doc franchise.  VH1 is also working on a miniseries VH1’s 100 Greatest Kid Stars. 

FOX reports Lukas Haas (Inception, 24, Witness) and newcomer Saxon Sharbino have joined the cast of Touch as series regulars and Greg Ellis (Pirates of the Caribbean: At World’s End, 24) was cast in a recurring role for the series’ second season.  Touch returns on FOX October 26 at 8p and is produced by Chernin Entertainment and Tailwind Productions in association with 20th Century Fox Television. 

Former Law & Order star, Annie Parisse is joining FOX’s midseason thriller The Following as a series regular.  The Following stars Kevin Bacon as past FBI agent Ryan Hardy who is brought in as a consultant when serial killer Joe Carroll (James Purefoy) escapes and begins a new killing spree.  Parisse will play FBI Specialist Debra Parker who is brought in to lead the investigation of Carroll and his followers.  The Following is from Bonanza Productions Inc. in association with Outerbanks Entertainment and Warner Bros. Television.

Two are added to the second season of ABC’s Once Upon a Time: Irish actor Colin O’Donoghue (The Tudors) is joining as villain Captain Hook and Michael Raymond-James (True Blood) is joining in a recurring role though details have not been revealed.  Once Upon a Time debuts September 30 on ABC.

Actress Charisma Carpenter (Buffy the Vampire Slayer, Angel) will host a new series, I Survived Evil (wt) for Investigation Discovery.  The 10-episode series features stories from victims who fought back against their attackers and survived.  I Survived Evil (wt) is produced by Cineflix Inc. for Investigation Discovery and is slated to premiere this month.

~ INTERNATIONAL HAPPENINGS ~

Mexico’s arts and entertainment channel, Canal 22 Internacional will premiere the new series, Mucho Corazon and dedicate the month of August to programming focusing on Chiapas: Paraiso Del Sureste Mexicano.  Muncho Corazon debuts August 13 and each episode examines the secrets of the inhabitants of Chiapas.  The series airs on Tuesdays, Thursdays and Saturdays at 1a; Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays at 10p as well as weekly encores on Mondays at 130a and on Sundays at 1030p.

US-based distributor, The Television Syndication Company (TVS) opened a new rep office in Singapore to do business with its Asian clients.  TVS Asia is a joint initiative with Sunrise Entertainment Pte Ltd. where Sunrise will manage the new business under the guidance of TVS.  The new structure will also have Sunrise formally aligning itself with the TVS US office.

Thursday A18-49 Analysis:  NBC rocked Thursday night winning at 11.9/35 among A18-49, according to final primetime national ratings from Nielsen.  NBC’s Summer Olympics coverage at 8p posted an 8.1/27 and CBS’ repeat comedies came in second at an average of 1.4/5.  During 9p, the Summer Olympics on NBC excelled at 11.5/32 and CBS claimed #2 again with Big Brother at 2.0/5.  NBC’s Summer Olympics’ ratings rose to a 14.6/39 at 10p and Univision moved into second place with La Que No Podia Amar at 1.8/5.

Peter Seymour was appointed to the newly-created role as EVP/CFO with Disney/ABC Television Group as announced by Anne Sweeney, Co-Chair, Media Networks and President, Disney/ABC Television Group, to whom he will report.  This move consolidates financial leadership for the entertainment portfolio under the Disney/ABC Television Group including the ABC Television Network, ABC Studios, ABC Owned Station Group, Disney Channel, Disney XD, Disney Junior, Disney Domestic Television, ABC Family, Radio Disney and Hyperion Publishing.  Peter will also retain his oversight of strategy development for The Walt Disney Company’s worldwide broadcasting and cable programming entities in addition to his management of research, customer relationship management, media planning and franchise management. 

Indianapolis-based advertising agency, Young & Laramore hired Cory Furman, Peter Johansen and Zac Neulieb in newly-created positions.  Effective immediately, Cory joins as Brand Action Strategist, Peter as Art Director and Zac as Graphic Designer.
