On the heels of the last week’s news relating the departure of Ellen DeGeneres as judge on FOX’s American Idol, the show is purportedly adding Jennifer Lopez and Steven Tyler as judges to join veteran judge Randy Jackson. Lopez’s contract is supposedly final and Tyler’s is soon to be completed. Two season judge Kara DioGuardi will also not be back. Additionally, and as reported last week, producer Nigel Lythgoe is returning as executive producer to the show. FOX is expected to declare these American Idol changes officially during the TCA press tour this week.
At Friday’s TCA press tour, NBC Universal Television Entertainment Chairman Jeff Gaspin reportedly confirmed the company signed a new agreement essentially sharing Piers Morgan with CNN in the position of Larry King’s replacement as host of the 9p hour. CNN apparently made an offer to Morgan though the deal is not yet finalized. The CNN show would tape on both coasts in New York and Los Angeles. CNN has not officially made the pronouncement public.
TNT approved new seasons of three of its drama series: The Closer for a 15-episode seventh season, the new Rizzoli & Isles for a 13-episode sophomore season and Leverage will be back for a fourth season with 15 total episodes. All three series will return with new seasons next year.
Bravo’s spin-off series Top Chef Just Desserts premieres September 15 at 11p and later will move to its regular time period of 10p on Wednesdays starting September 22. In this competition series, 12 top pastry chefs battle to see who can create the sweetest concoctions. Gail Simmons, who has been a judge on Top Chef for seven seasons, will serve as host for this new series, joined by judges Johnny Iuzzine, Hubert Keller and Dannielle Kyrillos. The winning pastry chef will receive $100,000 provided by Godiva Chocolatier, a feature in Food & Wine magazine and other prizes. Magical Elves produces.
