Good morning. It’s Monday, August 2, 2004, and this is your first early morning briefing.
CBS won the night on Thursday, with an overall 3.4/10 A18-49 according to Nielsen Media Research. This was the big night for the DNC with Kerry’s speech, though you’d be hard pressed to tell that by the numbers. CBS and NBC led at 10p with a very modest 2.1/6, followed by ABC’s 1.5/4. Combined, the three networks drew 15.97 million viewers from 10-11pm. PBS, which provided DNC coverage throughout primetime (8-11p) last week, averaged on Thursday an estimated 3.3 million viewers. Leading up to the DNC at 10p, CBS’ live broadcast of Big Brother (3.4/12 A18-49) and a repeat of CSI (4.6/14), dominated the night. WB debuted Blue Collar TV at 8pm adn earned a 2.0/7 A18-49 rating, though did better among the key women demos, ranking #2 or #3 in each: W18-34 2.5/9 (#2 in the tp), W18-49 2.4/8 (#3), W25-54 2.4/7 (#2).
Getting back to the DNC for a moment, there were approx 24.4 million viewers watching Kerry’s speech on Thursday night, 15.9 million of them were broadcast viewers, the remaining were watching cable news networks: CNN 4 million, Fox News 2.6 million and MSNBC 2.2 million. As far as the coverage for the four days – CNN averaged 2.3 million viewers, Fox News 2.0 million and MSNBC 1.3 million.
Premiering Tonight: Balderdash (bal*der*dash): on PAX at 830p
The Atlanta based Cox family, more specifically Barbara Cox Anthony and her sister Anne Cox Chambers, are looking to take Cox Enterprises which controls Cox Communications private in a $7.9 billion plan. The plan calls for the family to pay $32 for each common share, up 16% vs. the end of day price on Friday on the NYSE, though down 20% from the first of the year. The move still has to be approved by the Board of Directors of Cox Communications
Coming to NBC this winter is a new reality show which looks for new faces (or bodies) to don the pages of the Sports Illustrated Swimsuit Edition. Sports Illustrated’s Fresh Faces Competition culls the would-be models from online applications and casting calls. Viewers will chose the finalists. SI: Swimsuit Edition has chosen new models in a similar way in previous years (Michelle Lombardo won last year’s Fresh Faces competition), but this will be the first time it will be seen on television. According to The New York Times, the edition is due out February 15, 2005, and the show is expected to air in the weeks immediately preceding the newsstand date.
Court TV has ordered a play to be aired as a movie called The Exonerated (Court TV / @Radical.Media), about six people on death row, all convicted of crimes they did not commit. Actors signed on include Susan Sarandon, Brian Dennehy, Aidan Quinn, Danny Glover, David Brown Jr., and Delroy Lindo, according to Variety. Each will also do this project for a small percentage of what they would usually get paid, because of the subject matter (anti-capital punishment). The 95m movie is scheduled to air in early 2005
Family Guy returns to Fox with two mini-marathons scheduled to air opposite the Olympics on August 18 and 25, 8-10p. The network has also scheduled other mini-marathons as competition to NBC during the Summer Games, including nights of Simple Life, The Casino, Bernie Mac and Cops.
Continuing in their reality show meets soap synergy strategy at CBS, a current houseguest from Big Brother will appear on The Young & the Restless on August 30. On August 26, the Big Brother houseguests will compete for an unknown prize, and the winner will be brought blindfolded to the set of Y&R. This isn’t the first extra role performed by a reality show player on Y&R – most recent Colby from Survivor was on, as was Robbyne Manning from UPN’s America’s Next Top Model and Reichen Lehmkuhl from Amazing Race.
Travel Channel’s July 28 episode of World Poker Tour: Jack Binion World Poker Open, a repeat episode airing from 9-11pm, delivered the network’s highest rating in the channel’s history with a 1.56 HH Rtg with 1,157 million viewers. It was also the net’s 2nd highest demo rating among A25-54 with a .9 Rtg.
Premiering on September 18 on Fox Sports Net is Fuel’s 54321 Weekly Update, which will also air on Fox’s Sports sister net, Fuel. Originally slated as a daily news/sports program, the show has been re-tooled as a weekly, covering primarily sports related news from the previous week, with a look toward the upcoming week, according to Hollywood Reporter. You’d think his 15 minutes would be over by now, but William Hung, the derailed singer from American Idol, says he has an album due out shortly before Christmas, he’s shooting a Cantonese movie which co-stars Hong Kong headliner Nancy Sit Ka-yin Sit, and that “singing and entertainment are now my first priority.” Oh brother.
Spike TV will launch a new reality series on October 12 at 10p titled The Club. The show will be set at a dance club in Las Vegas called ICE, according to Hollywood Reporter. The show is about this club competing with the major Las Vegas casinos, and the day in and day out running of ICE, as well as his frequent patrons. Two major sponsors have signed on, which of course includes valuable product placement – Heineken and Allied Domecq Spirits, who will provide liquor to the club. Other sponsorships are expected. The History Channel presents This Day in History: 1865: The Confederate cruiser C.S.S. Shenandoah receives word from a British vessel that the Civil War has ended. Captain James I. Waddell, on a mission targeting Union whalers in the Pacific, was unwilling to believe earlier reports of the South’s surrender. After continuing to seize and burn Union vessels in the north Pacific, Waddell finally confirmed these reports with a passing British ship and surrendered the Shenandoah to British authorities in London.
