In addition, Univision News, a unit of Univision Communications Inc. will host its first ever Meet the Candidate events featuring the Democratic and Republican presidential candidates.  These forums will allow both candidates to address topics and issues that are relevant to the Hispanic community in Spanish and English.  The two events, moderated by anchors Jorge Ramos and Maria Elena Salinas will take place sometime before Election Day in front of a live audience and will be hosted in partnership with Facebook.  Both Governor Romney and President Obama have confirmed their participation and details of the two events will be released soon.

KSL-TV, the NBC affiliate in Salt Lake City, UT owned by Bonneville International Corporation which in turn is owned by The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints announced it will not broadcast new sitcom, The New Normal when it premieres this fall.  The New Normal is set to launch on NBC September 11 and is about a single mother who becomes a surrogate for a gay couple.  “After viewing the pilot episode of The New Normal, we have made the decision to keep it off our fall schedule,” Jeff Simpson, CEO of Bonneville International, said to Deseret News. “For our brand, this program simply feels inappropriate on several dimensions, especially during family viewing time.”  KSL-TV is also the station which opted to not broadcast NBC’s short-lived drama The Playboy Club which was canceled after three episodes last fall.

This Wednesday, HGTV debuts a new primetime series, Buying and Selling at 9p featuring identical twins, Drew and Jonathan Scott who also star in Property Brothers.  In their new series, Jonathan will renovate a home to sell while Drew will help the seller’s find a new property, oversee the sale of the renovated home and help them buy a new house.  A third season of Property Brothers will premiere on HGTV in January.  Buying and Selling and Property Brothers are both produced by Cineflix.

Last Thursday, GSN debuted new original series The American Bible Challenge which has delivered the network’s highest audience ever with 2.3 million total viewers for the night and 1.7 million total viewers for the premiere episode at 8p.  Hosted by Jeff Foxworthy, The American Bible Challenged is produced by RelativityREAL for GSN.

Also on Thursday, USA Network aired back-to-back season finales of Burn Notice and Suits.  At 9p, Burn Notice tallied 5.0 million total viewers; 1.9 million A25-54; and 1.7 million with A18-49 while Suits at 10p, attracted 4.5 million total viewers; 2.0 million with A25-54; and 1.9 million among A18-49.

Actress Rosemary Rice, best remembered for her role on an early TV family drama, Mama, died August 14 at her home in Stamford, CT at the age of 87.  Ms. Rice starred as eldest daughter, Katrin on the program that broadcast live on CBS in the early days of television from 1949-1957. The television series also starred Dick Van Patten as the brother, Nels.  Mama was recorded on kinescopes which were, for the most part, destroyed though Ms. Rice kept several for herself which she later donated to the broadcasting museum (now the Paley Center for Media) for an exhibit in 1985.  Survivors of Ms. Rice include a son and a daughter; a brother; and three grandchildren.

~PRODUCTION & DEVELOPMENT ~

ABC is offering another chance to comedy Kings of Van Nuys helmed by John Leguizamo.  The project, based on a British format titled Only Fools and Horses was passed over last pilot season and is about the misadventures of two street-wise brothers (Leguizamo and Dustin Ybarra) and their grandfather (Christopher Lloyd) as they devise outrageous and morally questionable get-rich quick schemes.  EPs on the pilot include Steven Cragg and Brian Bradley who will also write the script.  ABC Studios is producing.

Producer/director Mark Pellington (Cold Case) signed a one-year development deal with ABC and has a pilot project in the works for the network produced by ABC Studios.  The deal will have Pellington develop projects for ABC Studios and be the EP and also manage any project that is picked up.  Pellington sold his first project to the studio titled Shelter from writer John Hlavin (The Shield).  Shelter is a modern crime drama about an agent with the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms whose working-class Chicago life butts heads with his flashy L.A. cover when his wife exposes him to the criminal world.  3 Arts’ Tom Lassally is also on board as an EP.

A procedural drama was granted approval by The CW.  The network gave a script order to Wrecking Ball, a case-of-the-week drama from Richard Hatem (Grimm).  The plot is about a John F. Kennedy Jr.-type character that teams with a young campaign strategist to solve underdog cases.  Hatem will pen the project and serve as EP along with Ross Fineman.

20th Television inked a one-year talent holding and development deal with Wilmer Valderrama (That ’70s Show).  The deal has Valderrama developing a project where he would star and serve as a producer.  Valderrama recently nabbed a recurring role on FOX’s Raising Hope, also produced by 20th TV, where he will play Ricardo, the boyfriend to Melanie Griffith’s Tamera.

Premium cable network, Showtime is in talks with Marti Noxon (EP on Buffy the Vampire Slayer) to develop a semi-autobiographical half-hour divorce comedy called Guide to Divorce.  The project is about the relief, emotions, freedom and complications that result from divorce after a long-term relationship as told from the perspective of four 40-something women.  Noxon will write and be the EP via her Luckypants production company along with Dawn Olmstead, Meryl Poster and Vicki Iovine.

Production has begun on TLC’s new series Cheer Perfection about the world of competitive cheerleading.  Cheer Perfection aired as a special on July 11 which pulled in 1.1 million total viewers.  TLC has ordered eight one-hour episodes slated to premiere in December.  Authentic Entertainment, behind Toddlers & Tiaras and Here Comes Honey Boo Boo is producing the series.

FOX’s American Idol is close to signing rapper Nicki Minaj and country star Keith Urban as judges for season 12, per THR.  Both Minaj and Urban have been in talks for weeks with American Idol producers and FOX.  Minaj could make a reported $8 million with additional allowances for wardrobe, hair and makeup while Urban could close a deal for $3 to $4 million.  Country star Brad Paisley is apparently not in contention for the third judges’ seat since he was asking for the same salary as Minaj.  Nothing is official from FOX though deals are expected to be signed soon.

NBC’s upcoming series Hannibal cast Hettienne Park in a recurring role as Beverly Katz, a crime scene investigator whose specialty is fibers.

Also for NBC, the potential spin-off of The Office cast Matt Jones (Breaking Bad) to play Rain Wilson’s mysterious cousin Zeke.  The spin-off is titled The Farm and centers on Dwight (Wilson) as a beet farmer running a bed and breakfast inn.  The project is being served up as a potential back-door pilot to run as an episode of The Office this fall. Thomas Middleditch has also been cast as Dwight’s crazy brother, Jeb; Majandra Delfino as Dwight’s younger sister, Frannie; and Blake Garrett as his nephew, Cameron.  If The Farm is ordered to series, Jones would become a series regular.

Former House star Robert Sean Leonard will appear in a five-episode run on TNT’s series Falling Skies.  Leonard will play Roger Kadar, PhD, a talented though obsessive scientist who runs Charleston’s power grid from an underground bunker, living with his pet rats and scientific equipment.  Also, Gloria Reuben will star in a five-episode gig as Tom Mason’s (Noah Wyle) aide.

TV Land’s two new pilots have added more cast members to its rosters.  I’m Not Dead Yet (wt) will star Ben Falcone as Sandy Lazarus, a driving instructor who after learning he has a potentially fatal heart condition begins speaking his mind and living life to the fullest.  Adding to this cast list is Missi Pyle as Sandy’s wife and Elliott Gould as his father.  Production on I’m Not Dead Yet begins next month.  Jay Mohr will star in TV Land’s second pilot, Brothers-in-Law (wt) along with Josh Cooke, Ellen Woglom, Geoff Pierson and Kelen Coleman.  Brothers-in-Law centers on the family dynamic between Neil (Cooke) and his wife Cheska (Coleman) as they adjust to Van (Mohr), the odd fiancé of Cheska’s twin sister Maddie (Woglom).  Pierson plays family patriarch, Tom who forms an instant bond with Van which makes Neil jealous and annoyed.  This pilot will tape at the end of this month.
