Cynopsis: DIGITAL

08/24/09

Good morning, it’s Monday, August 24, 2009, and this is your first early morning digital briefing.

Apple offered insight into its iPhone app acceptance policy on Friday, responding to the FCC‘s request for more information regarding its rejection of Google‘s Voice app and other iPhone platform hopefuls. Apple (semantically) claims it hasn’t actually rejected the app (it’s still under review,) but the company goes into great detail to explain why it has not been approved. Specifically, it says the app alters the iPhone’s core user experience, replacing Apple’s user interface for calls, texts and voicemail. The company goes on to confirm that AT&T was not involved in the decision, and that the telco has no say into which apps are approved or rejected. Google also made its answer to the FCC public, but redacted the bits regarding Apple’s rejection of the Google Voice app.

This should have the cable and satellite providers worried. Apple is getting ready to launch an update to the Apple TV set-top that enables Netflix-style subscription viewing, according to a report published by Piper Jaffray’s Gene Munster. An iTunes “TV Pass” could leverage the vast iTunes catalogue offering users unlimited rentals of movies and TV shows for a standard monthly fee of $30-$40 month. The company may even release its own Apple-branded television in the next two years set that integrates Apple TV functionality.

Call for votes: Showtime and the Smithsonian Institution’s Smithsonian Networks is looking for input as it considers 3 different new settings to encase the legendary 45-carat Hope Diamond, each symbolizing hope in America. The Hope Diamond will be put on display in its new setting at the National Museum of Natural History, and televised nationally as part of the world premiere of the Smithsonian Channel’s “Mystery of the Hope Diamond” in March of 2010.

~ INNOVATORS & START-UPS ~

Independent video sharing site Metacafe racked up a new audience record in July, attracting more than 12 million U.S. users according to ComScore. The increase represents a 67% jump over July of 2008 and a 10% month-to-month increase.

Sony
is enlisting the help of “Daddy Bloggers” in a new project to get them to try the company’s latest personal electronics used to capture family experiences. Invited to participate are Michael Sheehan from HighTechDad.com, Max Kalehoff from AttentionMax.com, Brad Powel of DadLabs.com, C.C. Chapman from DigitalDads.com and CC-Chapman.com and Jeffrey Sass of DadoMatic.com.

~ DIGITAL ADVERTISING ~

In a play to increase accountability and convince advertisers of the effectiveness of mobile advertising, Microsoft began selling on-deck display inventory across Verizon‘s closed Ad Network on a verifiable cost-per-click basis, reports Mobile Marketer. Atlas DMT and DoubleClick DART will provide third-party verification for advertisers.

~ TECHNOLOGY DEALS, MERGERS AND SKIRMISHES ~

In a rare showing of solidarity, Microsoft, Yahoo and Amazon are uniting under the guise of the Open Book Alliance to take on Google and its ambitious Book Settlement. The three companies oppose an agreement established last fall that clears the way for Google to index all the available copyright-free books in the world. The $125 million agreement, still awaiting approval from a judge overseeing the case, was reached with authors and publishers last fall.

Yahoo
won a U.S. court ruling upholding a previous verdict that specifies that its Launchcast webcasting service is not required to pay broader licensing fees to record labels for use of its content. The three-judge panel claimed the service is only required to pay fees set by the SoundExchange nonprofit, established to collect basic fees on sound recordings.

Online content management platform Platformic introduced a new mobile blogging tool to its CMS platform that enables publishers to add video, photos and text updates to articles that appear on mobile sites optimized for the iPhone, BlackBerry or other devices.

~ GADGETS & APPS ~

The new Qik app enabling video streaming on the iPhone 3GS released a new update that extends functionality beyond just a WiFi connection, enabling users to stream videos via AT&T’s 3G network.

New media pundits are already starting to send the death knell of Facebook, simply because it’s just gotten too mainstream. (Let’s face it – when soccer moms start showing up on a site, younger users don’t want to be caught dead there.) One answer to the “what’s next?” question may be the create-your-own web startpage interface. In a play to give it a leg up on competitors such as Netvibes, Google introduced a new plug-in to the iGoogle customizable homepage that enables live video chat directly from the site. Download the free plug-in and you can chat with anyone who has a webcam and a Google account using the Gtalk interface. (System requirements are Windows XP or later or Intel Mac OS x 10.4 or later.) Combine this with the 19 new social gadgets released last week and the platform begins to work quite well for updating your status, playing games, keeping up on the latest news and sharing content.
