Good morning. It’s Monday, August 21, 2006 and this is your first early morning Kids! briefing.
NEW PRODUCTION & DEVELOPMENT
Daniel Craig has joined the cast of New Line Cinema’s movie adaptation of The Golden Compass, the first chapter in author Philip Pullman’s His Dark Materials book trilogy. Slated to being production this September 4, 2006, Craig will play Lord Asriel, a callous adventurer with an enigmatic past. Craig’s name no doubt rings a bell – he is also James Bond in the new version of Casino Royale. The Golden Compass will be directed by Chris Weitz (About a Boy, Antz), who also wrote the screenplay for the movie, and produced by Scholastic’s Deborah Forte. Weitz and Andrew Miano of Depth of Field (In Good Company) are executive producers on the film. Bill Carraro will also serve as a producer on the film. The Golden Compass is currently scheduled for a November 16, 2007 release.
During a webcast on Yahoo! Movies on Friday, Transformers fans were let in on character information when the movie’s two screenwriters, Robert Orci and Alex Krutzman, revealed just which Transformers will be in the movie. And without further ado … The Autobots included in the movie are: Optimus Prime; Bublebee; Jazz; Ratchet; and Ironhide. And the Decepticons include: Megatron; Starscream; Brawl; Bonecrusher; Barricade; Scorponok; Frenzy; and Blackout.
Ann Peacock has been tapped to pen the screenplay for Walden Media’s American Girl feature film, according to The Hollywood Reporter. Previously Peacock adapted the recent big screen version of The Chronicles of Narnia: The Lion, The Witch and The Wardrobe for Walden Media. The American Girl movie is being produced by Goldsmith-Thomas Productions and Julia Roberts’ Red Om Films. American Girl is a subsidiary of Mattel.

The end of August means only one thing … back-to-school, which of course leads directly to parent/kid tussles over homework (not at my house of course — ahem). AOL has launched StudyBuddy.com, a new 24/7, free search engine designed specifically to offer help with homework doled out in kindergarten through high school. The information is broken down into age appropriate groupings and is searchable key words or phrases. Search results range can include websites, books, journals, articles, newspapers, encyclopedias, multimedia video, audio clips, maps and so on from content providers including World Book Encyclopedia, The Columbia Encyclopedia, National Wildlife Federation, Time for Kids.com, The Princeton Review, Night Sky, Sky & Telescope and blinkx, as well as from CIA World Fact Book and sources from Thomson Gale. The site offers the new AOL Algebra 1 Review, and provides all users with Backpacks (read: online folders) where searches and content can be stored and shared, in addition to parent monitoring abilities.
