Good morning. It’s Monday, August 19, 2013, and this is your first early morning briefing.

Tonight’s Premieres:
Food Network: Bubba-Q at 10:30p
REELZ: Delete at 8p

Tonight’s Finales:
ABC Family: Switched at Birth at 8p

Fox Television Studios is out of the running to produce NBC‘s miniseries about Hillary Clinton, but it’s not because the Republican National Committee voted unanimously on Friday to ban NBC from hosting GOP primary debates in 2016 unless the net kills the Clinton project (CNN is out, too, thanks to a planned documentary about the possible candidate). An executive involved in the negotiations told the New York Times it was a failure to agree on financial terms, rather than Republican threats, that prompted Fox to pull out. As for NBC, “The Hillary Clinton movie has not been ordered to production,” said NBC Entertainment Chairman Bob Greenblatt in a statement. “It is ‘in development’, the first stage of any television series or movie, many of which never go to production.”

~ MORE GOOD STUFF ~

Talking to a panel of Emmy voters, The Big Bang Theory‘s Chuck Lorre spoke about the show’s eight Emmy noms and becoming TV’s top sitcom in its sixth season (18.6 million viewers), a point at which most shows are fading. “The last couple of years have been beyond our wildest dreams,” said Lorre. “We’ve grown up and the show has matured, and we’re doing a much better job of putting on the show every week.” He credited syndicated repeats on TBS with helping to increase viewership, and characters that haven’t grown stale. “For us to have a sustained relationship with an audience over time, we have to make a great show every week,” said Lorre. “If you go into a restaurant and you get a bad meal, you don’t go back. That’s how we feel about The Big Bang Theory. Every week has to be a show that we’re proud of.”

FOX sitcom Dads isn’t so funny to the Media Action Network for Asian Americans, which is demanding the net re-shoot “racially insensitive jokes.” Given the reaction of critics to the pilot episode, and the acknowledgement of Fox chairman Kevin Reilly at the TCA that the show needed retooling, tweaking the ep “sounds like a no-brainer,” said the MANAA in a letter to Fox. Dads is scheduled to premiere Tuesday, September 17 at 8p.

Comcast‘s Steve Burke isn’t going anywhere. NBCUni extended the president and CEO’s contract well ahead of its late 2014 expiration, through August 2018.

Usually Oprah Winfrey is the one coaxing people to open up, but lately she’s been the one offering surprising revelations. Making the press rounds to promote her film, Lee Daniels’ The Butler, Winfrey told People magazine that as she dealt with the disappointing launch of OWN, she had symptoms of a nervous breakdown. “After 25 years of being number one, I had become accustomed to success,” she admitted. “I didn’t expect failure… I thought, what have I gotten myself into?” On Bravo‘s Watch What Happens Live, Winfrey said to Andy Cohen, “All these years I’ve been telling people to hang in there, to hold onto their dreams… and I went, ‘Oh, now I get to walk that walk.'” She went on to say OWN is now “making money – and let me tell you, it’s so much more fun to make money than to lose it.”

MTV has ordered 10 eps of Jerks With Cameras, featuring comedians on the street pranking people. The series, from Jersey Shore EP Sally Ann Salsano‘s 495 Productions, launches in 2014.

What will Mom say? Sony Pictures Television, producer of AMC hit Breaking Bad, has made a deal with Rasta Imposta to produce a costume based on the show’s lead, a hazmat-suited high school chemistry teacher in the meth business. Series is in its fifth and final season, Sundays at 10p.

Katie Couric was put on the defense after In Touch magazine quoted her saying of the Kardashian family, “I don’t understand – why are they so famous?” Reality star Kim Kardashian, who had received a baby gift from Couric after giving birth in June, posted to Twitter, “#IHateFakeMediaFriends  MayIHumblySuggestYouNotSendGiftsThenTalkSht.” Forcing Couric to issue a statement: “I was responding to a reporter’s question, and explaining how I’m intrigued by the public’s fascination with her family. I didn’t mean to hurt her feelings.”

Investigation Discovery‘s On the Case with Paula Zahn aired its 100th episode on Sunday, the first ID show to hit that mark. Exec producer Scott Sternberg recalls for Cynopsis how the journalism show got its name: As he, exec producer Scott Weinberger and Zahn “walked into the ID offices in the freezing cold without a title,” Sternberg recalls, “Paula was window shopping and saw a case on display in a bakery. And that was the icing.” Larry Israel is another of the team’s EPs.

MTV.com has hooked up with Bedsider.org, an online birth control support network, for a series of webisodes that show what happened to four of the teens who were featured on MTV’s 16 and Pregnant. In the videos, the girls discuss the difficulties they face as young moms, and talk candidly about teen pregnancy and contraception. Eps are on http://on.mtv.com/16pKUcz.

Trophies for the 28th annual Imagen Awards were handed out Friday night, honoring positive portrayals of Latinos and Latino culture. Monica Raymund (Chicago Fire) and Jon Huertas (Castle) won for lead actor and actress. Castle won for best primetime TV show.

Is Jennifer Lopez returning to the American Idol judging panel? Yes, JLo’s boyfriend Casper Smart told E! News. No comment, said Fox, which has confirmed Keith Urban will be back for a second season. Lopez was a judge in the singing competition’s tenth and eleventh seasons; show returns for lucky season thirteen in January 2014.

Someone didn’t do his homework. After fundamentalist, gay-condemning evangelist Doug Sehorne searched the Internet for a cover image for his e-book, Bible Principles of Child Discipline, he decided on a wholesome-looking photo of a mom, a dad and three smiling children. Except it turned out to be a publicity photo for ABC’s gay-friendly sitcom Modern Family. Sehorne was quick to pledge to remove the picture. “Anyone who knows me knows I would never condone such wickedness as sodomy,” he said, “or even TV.”

~ PRODUCTION & DEVELOPMENT ~

Darren Star (Sex and the City) has signed with TV Land for Younger, based on the novel by Pamela Redmond Satran, about a housewife in her 40s who lies about her age to get a glamorous job in publishing.

Lauren Graham (Parenthood) is adapting her best-selling novel, Someday, Someday, Maybe for The CW as an hour-long drama. Ellen Degeneres will exec produce the project, from her A Very Good Production, about an actress trying to make it in the Big Apple before the three years she allowed herself to find success runs out.

Fox came out the winner in a bidding war for a Tina Fey/Matt Hubbard/Robert Carlock sitcom about a women’s college that just started admitting men. Hubbard will write; he, Fey, Carlock and 3 ArtsDavid Miner will exec produce.

NBC beat competitors to nab drama The Mysteries of Laura, about a female homicide detective, based on the Spanish series Los Misterios De Laura.

CBS may be out of the NBC/Hillary/GOP fray, but the net is putting into development Madame Secretary, a drama about a fictional female Secretary of State. Barbara Hall (Joan of Arcadia) will write.

Southern California residents A18-35 who love ink are being recruited by Doron Ofir Casting for a tattoo and piercing TV project. Contact: [email protected].

~ CASTING NEWS ~

SNL alum Rachel Dratch has been cast as Brick’s middle school principal on The Middle. She’ll appear early in season five of the ABC sitcom, returning Wednesday, September 25 at 8p.

JoAnna Garcia (Reba) will make a splash as Once Upon a Time‘s Little Mermaid. Season three of the series returns Sunday, September 29 at 8p.

Fox psychological thriller The Following welcomes Valerie Cruz (Homeland) as tough NYPD detective Gina Mendez. Series returns for season two in January, 2014.

~ DISTRIBUTION ~

Bounce TV has struck a deal with Gannett Broadcasting‘s KSDK-TV to carry the net in St. Louis, MO, and the evp of distribution couldn’t be happier. “The network is red-hot right now,” Jeffrey Wolf tells Cynopsis. “St. Louis closes out the top 25 African American markets for us and further accelerates our momentum. Our initial ratings have been strong, advertiser response exceptional and our original programming ramps up in the fall – and we’re not even two years old yet.”

~ INTERNATIONAL HAPPENINGS ~

A U.K. soap star is in hot water over violent, offensive lyrics he posted in a rap video on YouTube. Chris Fountain has been suspended from Coronation Street as ITV investigates the issue. “I would like to sincerely apologize for any offense I have caused,” said Fountain in a statement. “I am deeply ashamed by the lyrics and very much regret my behavior.”

Certification to receive a hefty 25% production tax break has been handed to several BBC projects, per new regulations aimed at shows the British Film Institute considers culturally British or British co-productions. Showtime‘s Penny Dreadful, from Sam Mendes, is expected to qualify for the tax relief.
