Fighting words: Dish Network chief Charlie Ergen said in an earnings call that the satellite service provider is prepared to drop Disney/ABC and ESPN if they can’t find a deal “that makes sense for our customers… If we don’t get that deal, we’ll part ways – simple as that.” He added, “Disney’s not going to go out of business without the Dish Network and vice versa.” Dish’s agreement with Disney for ABC-owned stations, ESPN and other cable networks expires September 30.

~ MORE GOOD STUFF ~

Fox is digging deep when it comes to original programming this season. During 21st Century Fox‘s Investor Day on Thursday, Fox chairman Kevin Reilly said, “Our programming spend, including a sizable lift in development, will increase by more than 10%. And our marketing investment will grow more than 25%… The series we’ve ordered for this coming season represent the biggest investment in programming and marketing in the history of our network.” (In May, Fox ordered 11 new scripted series, compared to five in May 2012.) “This season we’ll be within striking distance of one of our primary long-term goals,” said Reilly, “virtually year-round original programming.”

Piracy rates have climbed in areas where Time Warner Cable‘s three million plus customers can’t access CBS shows, reported TorrentFreak. The weblog says unauthorized downloads and streaming for Under the Dome rose by 34% as the companies remain in a standoff in their carriage contract dispute. While TorrentFreak said there was no way to ascertain how many downloaders were TWC subscribers, the results “do suggest that the blackout resulted in a piracy surge.” The first week of the blackout, by the way, had a negligible impact on CBS, reports the net: overall ratings were down 0.2% in total viewers and unchanged A18-49. However, Under the Dome was down 7% A18-49, but up in top 10 markets not affected by the dispute.

Odd couple: Fox Television Studios, sib to conservative Fox News, is in the early stages of talks to produce the announced NBC mini-series about Hillary Clinton, reports the New York Times. If a deal is struck, FTVS would distribute the program internationally. Reince Priebus, chairman of the Republican National Committee, has threatened to keep the upcoming election debates off NBC and MSNBC if the net aired the mini-series, set to star Diane Lane.

Alec Baldwin is getting a soapbox at MSNBC, in the form of a weekly television show, reports Medialite. Source says the show would air Fridays at 10p, current slot of Lockup prison doc.

Jay Leno‘s last day as host of the Tonight Show is February 6, reports Variety, adding that Leno’s contract with NBC runs through September 2014, and show’s staff will be paid until then. Jimmy Fallon will take over following the net’s February 7-23 Olympics coverage.

No more Mr. nice guys: According to Forbes Magazine, the two highest earners between June 2012 and June 2013 in radio/TV are Simon Cowell and Howard Stern, each raking in about $95 million; in third place was right wing radio host Glenn Beck. Without her syndicated show gone, Oprah Winfrey‘s $77 million take dropped her to fourth place. Forbes’ estimates of stars’ earnings from entertainment-related work was based on intel from industry insiders.

Just when you thought it was safe to turn on TV again… Syfy has announced the result of a social media campaign to name the sequel to Sharknado, the TV movie that had freak tornadoes dumping man-eating sharks all over LA. After 5000+ suggestions were submitted via Twitter, the net reveals that Sharknado 2: The Second One will wreak havoc, this time in Gotham, in July 2014.

There will be changes at Fox News Channel, said Roger Ailes at an investor conference, though the FNC president didn’t offer specifics. “One of my jobs is to get the best audience flow between shows and that’s one of the reasons I’m making a few changes right now,” he said. As for reports that Megyn Kelly is replacing Sean Hannity, Ailes offered, “I don’t confirm or deny any rumors, and that is a rumor at the moment.” But he added, “All of our stars will be back. Hannity is a brand that many of our viewers love and want to see, and as you know, is one of the nicest guys in the building.”

On the heels of its deal to broadcast select NASCAR races through 2024, Fox Sports has struck a five-year deal for United Sports Car Racing events. The agreement beefs up content for Fox Sports One, launching Saturday, August 17.

~ RETURNING SERIES ~

Bring on the pom-poms! TLC‘s Cheer Perfection is back for second season, as coach Alisha Dunlap puts the Youth Silver Squad cheerleaders through their paces. “The girls are working hard and their confidence is high,” Dunlap tells Cynopsis. “They go into the second half of the season being undefeated and with a bid to win the finals.” Does the coach worry that sometimes her team gets too competitive? Hardly. “Sometimes the girls forget to be competitive and slack off,” she says. “Another team with more drive could walk in and take it all. It comes down to which team wants it more.” Series returns August 28 at 9:30p.

Discovery Channel‘s Amish Mafia, a reality show about an unlikely crew of enforcers for the peace-loving community, comes back with a bang. “Look for lots of shakeups and betrayals,” series exec producer Matthew Kelly tells. “Alliances and relationships that you thought were solid prove to be anything but, and people you would never think would, join forces.” Out of commission for a while will be AM star Alan Beiler, who was sentenced on Thursday to 23 months in prison, after pleading guilty in May to charges of attempting to elude police, drug possession and driving with a suspended license. Premiere date is Tuesday, August 13 at 9p; catch-up special airs tonight at 9p.

~ PRODUCTION & DEVELOPMENT ~

Fox has put into development a procedural set in San Francisco. Noone, featuring a female police detective, comes from Hart Hanson (Bones) and Jason Horwitch (Medical Investigation).

Katherine Heigl (Grey’s Anatomy) is hoping to return to primetime as the lead in a gritty procedural, reports Deadline, which says the drama, written by Alexi Hawley (Following), has drawn interest from numerous nets, including NBC. It appears the actress will exec produce, with her mother/manager Nancy Heigl.

Material based on a trilogy of erotic novels is headed for the small screen. Anonymous Content has licensed author Kyra Davis‘ popular e-book series, Just One Night, to be published in a single hardcover volume, and developed for television.

Top Dog Productions is sniffing around for three men and three women (late teens/early twenties) for the pilot episode of a scripted doc about feuding Appalachian mountain families, production to be based in Orlando FL. For info: [email protected].

~ CASTING NEWS ~

Juliette Lewis has signed onto Fox‘s upcoming M. Night Shyamalan event series Wayward Pines, a thriller about a secret service agent. Greta Lee (Girls) has also been added, joining Matt Dillon and Carla Gugino.

Molly Sims will guest star on at least two episodes of The Carrie Diaries‘ season two as Vicky, a rival for Carrie. CW series returns Friday, October 25 at 8p.

~ INTERNATIONAL HAPPENINGS ~

Canada’s City has acquired NBC‘s The Million Second Quiz Show, a live 12-day competition in which contestants are put to the trivia test – over and over. The Ryan Seacrest-hosted series premieres Monday, September 9 at 8p.

~ EMMY Q & A ~

Leading up to the primetime Emmys on September 22, Cynopsis is checking in with some of the nominees. First up: Jason Silva, host of Brain Games, speaking on behalf of National Geographic Channel‘s nom for Outstanding Informational Series or Special. Silva, a self-proclaimed “wonder junkie,” is known for his impassioned takes on scientific and technological advancements. Brain Games airs on Friday at 9p.

Were you surprised by your nomination?
Yes, and incredibly humbled. It’s thrilling to know that a show aiming to inform and inspire people to think differently about their brains is getting this kind of recognition.

How did you celebrate?
I enjoyed some epic Venezuelan food in NYC with friends.

How did you get your start in television?
When I was finishing film school at University of Miami in 2005, I submitted a short film to Al Gore‘s Current TV network and was delighted that it inspired the head of programming David Neuman to offer me a job hosting a show on the network. From there I began producing my own web content focusing on the co-evolution of brains and technology and then Nat Geo came knocking for Brain Games.

What might an Emmy mean for your show?
I think it will solidify the appeal of content that not only entertains, but informs and inspires. It’s such a complex show to produce and the team we have working on it is just incredible.

The singer and her husband starred on NBC’s The Steve Lawrence and Eydie Gorme Show in 1958; Gorme also made numerous television appearances over the years, on shows like Password, What’s My Line and the Carol Burnett Show. She won a primetime Emmy in 1979 for Steve & Eydie Celebrate Irving Berlin. “Eydie has been my partner on stage and in life for more than 55 years,” said Lawrence in a statement. “I fell in love with her the moment I saw her and even more the first time I heard her sing.
