My view from MIPTV:  Traveling to another country is always an interesting thing.  And what people  feel they cannot travel without, gives some unique insight as well.  For instance, I  cannot travel anywhere without at least two laptops.  You know, just in case.  Just in case something goes awry with one of them – and it always seems to – that I have a second one to make sure you get these daily missives!  And sure enough, this trip the 2nd machine came in handy!  But for others, and I’ve talked to a few people about this, the relevance and importance of that must-have item isn’t so obvious.  For instance, what about these — fuzzy slippers, Berocca (some mysterious effervescent vitamin drink), eyeliner and lipgloss (naturally) or for some it’s a bone stimulator.  Try explaining that one to the customs agent!  Meanwhile for others it’s all about the traditions of what you do once you arrive in Cannes — a Seaweed wrap and a personal hose down at a local spa (really?!), lunch with the all the girls at Cafe Romma, or a glass of Rose on the patio at The Grand. Whichever way you roll, and no matter what you packed or forgot and left at home, traveling to this particular part of the world is a pretty sweet deal.

~ PRODUCTION & DEVELOPMENT ~

CBS approved an unscripted quiz show pilot titled Secret Fortune and American Idol executive producer Nigel Lythgoe and his Big Red 2 Entertainment and Wild Rover Productions are behind the project.  The premise has pairs of competing contestants answer questions pertaining to various amounts of money contained in 24 envelopes.  International distributor DRG is selling the Secret Fortune format to other European territories such as BBC1 in the UK.  Lythgoe will serve as executive producer of Secret Fortune along with Wild Rover’s Phil Morrow.

A reality show based on the documentary film Catfish is being developed by MTV and production company RelativityReal, reports Variety.  Catfish drew attention at last year’s Sundance Film Festival about a New York photographer who travels to Michigan to meet a woman he met on Facebook.  The photographer discovers the woman is not who she claims to be.  The TV pilot project is in infancy stages though would likely focus on social networks users who purposely misidentify themselves and the results that happen.  The creative talent behind the documentary film would be involved in the MTV project.

After finalizing negotiations, Jeff Daniels now officially cast in Aaron Sorkin’s HBO drama pilot about a political talk show host.  Daniels’ starring role is apparently inspired by Keith Olbermann and Chris Matthews.  So far, no other roles have been cast.
