Midseason comedy Best Friends Forever has been canceled by NBC. The series debuted in early April accumulating 4 million viewers and a 1.2 rating in the A18-49 demo though since then the ratings have declined. In its place, NBC will air a new episode of Betty White’s Off Their Rockers in the 830p Wednesday slot. The network has not stated when it will air the two remaining episodes of Best Friends Forever.
NBC also has moved the third season finale of Community up a week to May 17 to air during May sweeps and also added another Community episode to make it a double episode ending, cites Futon Critic. The lineup on May 17 will include Community at 8p; 30 Rock season finale at 830p; followed by back-to-back Community episodes with the season finale at 930p. This shift also moves the first season finale of drama Awake to air on May 24, the night after May sweeps concludes.
Paranormal drama Fringe received a final season order from FOX. Produced by Warner Bros. Television, Fringe will have 13 episodes for its last season taking the series’ library of episodes to 87.
New original scripted drama series Longmire premieres on A&E Network starting June 3 at 10p directly following the third season debut of returning drama The Glades at 9p. Longmire is a crime thriller based on the Walt Longmire Mystery novels by Craig Johnson and Australian actor Robert Taylor stars as the charismatic and dedicated sheriff, Walt Longmire. The series also stars Katee Sackhoff, Lou Diamond Phillips, Bailey Chase, Cassidy Freeman and newcomer Adam Bartley. The first season of Longmire contains ten one-hour episodes produced by The Shephard/Robin Company in association with Warner Horizon Television. The Glades is produced by Fox Television Studios for A&E Network.
The summer primetime schedule for OWN: Oprah Winfrey Network ushers in six new series and new episodes of Oprah’s Next Chapter and the return of docu-series Our America with Lisa Ling. Descriptions of the new series include:
- Are you Normal, America? A new game show hosted by Barry Poznick and comedienne/actress Kim Coles watches as two contestants compete to win more than $100,000 in their quest to learn if they’re normal. Produced by Harpo Studios with Zoo Productions. Premieres June 4 at 9p with a sneak preview airing June 3 at 10p.
- Lives on Fire This series follows four women who risk their lives every day as members of one of the nation’s largest emergency response teams as they manage dangerous disasters in California. The series also delves into the women’s personal lives. Produced by BBC Worldwide Productions. Premieres June 8 at 9p.
- Million Dollar Neighborhood The community of Aldergrove is working together on a million dollar challenge where they attempt to increase their net worth by a million dollars in three months. Produced by Force Four Entertainment. Series premieres June 9 at 9p.
- Real Life: The Musical New weekly reality series that helps tongue-tied people sing the words “I love you” or “marry me” and more as they work with a vocal coach and a choreographer to stage a live “flash musical” that surprises their loved one. Produced by ITV Studios America. Premieres June 9 at 10p.
- Super Saver Showdown A new competition reality series that features two fanatic bargain hunters competing to see which one has the best coupon clipping, DIY skills. Produced by Glassman Media. Series premieres in July.
- Lovetown, USA Following a nationwide search, Oprah Winfrey dubbed Kingsland, GA as Lovetown, USA, a community that is participating in a social experiment led by relationship coaches Paul Carrick Brunson and Kailen Rosenberg. The coaches will attempt to transform the town of Kingsland in 30 days into a community that embraces all kinds of love, where broken relationships are mended and acts of love, kindness and forgiveness become the norm. Produced by BBC Worldwide Productions for OWN. Premieres this August.
- Oprah’s Next Chapter returns with new episodes this summer airing on Sundays at 9p. The series follows Oprah as she conducts in-depth interviews with Neil Patrick Harris and then travels to Brazil to meet a man known as “John of God.” Produced by Harpo Studios.
- Our America with Lisa Ling debuts a new season June 10 at 10p and joins Ling as she reveals an up-close look at the Native American culture, young girls entering convents, arranged marriages and the world of child pageants. Produced by part2 pictures.
English-language TV network, Mnet, targeting Asian Americans and fans of Asian pop culture in the US, opens a third season of Short Notice on May 9 at 8p, as part of the Asian Pacific American Heritage Month. The show premieres with a Short Notice Film Festival produced from Los Angeles that lets fans pick their favorite short film created by and starring Asian Americans. For the new season, Short Notice also introduces George Wong as the new host who will continue interviewing filmmakers and talent about their perspectives on the industry and what it means to be Asian American.
Bravo’s series premiere of Don’t Be Tardy for the Wedding last Thursday attracted 1.4 million total viewers and 691,000 with A18-49 for its 9p episode and the second new episode at 930p delivered 1.7 million total viewers and 865,000 with A18-49. The series, produced by True Entertainment for Bravo, airs on Thursdays at 930p.
Last Wednesday, Syfy debuted new half-hour unscripted competition series Total Blackout at 10p which averaged 747,000 A25-54, becoming the network’s most watched reality series premiere in the demo. The series launch also delivered 1.33 million total viewers and 678,000 with A18-49. Hosted by Jaleel White, Total Blackout is produced by FremantleMedia North America.
Also on Wednesday, National Geographic Channel premiered the sixth season of Locked Up Abroad at 10p which averaged a 0.5 rating and 420,000 among A25-54 and 672,000 total viewers. Locked Up Abroad airs on Wednesdays at 10p.
GMC will introduce a dozen new original World Premiere Plays including From this Day Forward in May, To Love and to Cherish in June and In Sickness and in Health in September. The three plays are part of a four-part series of wedding vow-themed stage plays that began in April. In addition, GMC is developing two comedy series based on a previously-aired play titled Sugar Mommas and the wedding vow series. These two series will debut in 2013. In addition, GMC has 16 original World Premiere Movies planned with twelve aimed at the general market and four (one per quarter) to the African American audience. A sampling of the movie titles include: Raising Izzie in July; Somebody’s Child in August; Teachers in September; and the December holiday movie The Angel Next Door among other titles. The network emphasizes its GMC World Premiere Movies and GMC World Premiere Plays are part of its World Premiere Programming strategy that will additionally encompass GMC World Premiere Specials and GMC World Premiere Series.
Broadcast veteran Charles A. “Chuck” McFadden Jr. died last Monday at the age of 79. Mr. McFadden had a varied television broadcasting career which began in 1952, while still in college as a floor director at WOW-TV in Omaha. After a stint in the military and from 1966 onwards, Mr. McFadden held various television sales and management posts including working in the early days of syndication on the Phil Donahue Show from Dayton, Ohio. During the ten year period of 1971 to 1981, Mr. McFadden gained higher management positions in television. Then in January 1981, Mr. McFadden joined what later became the TVX Corp., the largest group of independent TV stations in the country at the time becoming an EVP in 1987 and later GM of WTVZ-TV in Norfolk, VA. Mr. McFadden formed his own company and purchased WTVZ-TV in 1989. He also purchased WSYT-TV in Syracuse, NY in 1991 and sold to Sinclair Broadcasting in 1997. Mr. McFadden then became a Senior Partner/Consultant at Max Media II in Virginia Beach, VA, a position he retained until his death. Throughout his life and career, Mr. McFadden was highly involved in philanthropy and was a member of many industry organizations including the Broadcast Pioneers Association. He is survived by his wife of 57 years and several children and grandchildren. NBCUniversal and Ryan Seacrest have made a new two-year multi-platform deal involving on-air, broadcasting and producing projects across the networks NBC and E!. The agreement extends Seacrest’s present on-air duties with E! to now include NBC. Seacrest will become a special correspondent for NBC News’ TODAY and he will contribute to NBC primetime news as well as produce and contribute to NBC entertainment programs. Seacrest will additionally contribute to NBC’s primetime coverage of the Olympics starting with the 2012 Summer Olympics in London. Furthermore, Seacrest will remain with E! as Managing Editor of E! News and will continue to host and produce E!’s Live from the Red Carpet specials.
Season two of Dangerous Waters from Dangerous Waters Productions tapped the production team of Doug and Todd Stanley from Ridgeline Entertainment to manage production. The adventure reality series documents the expedition of five diverse people as they circumnavigate the world on Sea Doo personal watercraft. Dangerous Waters is distributed in the US and Canada by The Television Syndication Company (TVS).
