American Idol fans set a record for call-ins and text messages during last week’s two-night charity telecast Idol Gives Back. The April 24th episode generated more than 70 million toll-free and AT&T SMS votes cast for the remaining 6 contestants, topping the previous record of 65.4 million votes cast during season 3. For a limited time, the audio and video performances of both the contestants and celebrity guests will be available for purchase on iTunes, with proceeds going to help fight poverty in the U.S. and Africa.
~ MULTIPLATFORM CONTENT NEWS ~
Disney.com will stream a 9-minute trailer of the latest Pixar/Disney feature Ratatouille from tomorrow. The video playlist on the site will exclusively feature content from the film during the first 24 hours of May, PST. The stunt is part of an on air cross promotion that includes a 90-second commercial during American Idol, designed to drive viewers to the site. Disney.com visitors can also link to the interactive Ratatouille XD Channel, which includes animated customer widgets and a chat room designed to teach kids select French phrases. The movie opens in theaters June 29.
AOL began testing a newly designed web portal, which includes more “preview panels” and allows for more personalization by users. Preview panels provide one-click links to information about local weather, daily horoscopes, email and AOL radio stations. A local search engine allows users to search for traffic information and other locally targeted goodies such as gas prices. AOL has invited about 5% of its users to test the new site, but click here if you didn’t get an invite.

Santa Clara, CA-based Vudu, Inc. plans to deliver a device later this summer for around $300 that will allow internet-connected televisions to access over 5,000 films instantly, without a PC or a cable subscription. Vudu has output deals signed with every major studio except for Sony, according to The New York Times. The service features advanced encryption technology and a peer-to-peer delivery system. The company is staffed with several Tivo veterans, including its COO and VP of Engineering. For pictures of the high tech gizmo, check the blog Gizmodo.
A federal jury found that Yahoo‘s online music service Launchcast is not liable to Sony’s BMG Music Entertainment for copyright infringement, according to Billboard.biz. The six-year old case ended when the jury decided the licenses Launchcast obtained from record industry royalty collection service SoundExchange as a “non-interactive” service gave Yahoo sufficient clearances. The sticking point came when deciding what makes a service interactive; while Launchcast users can’t pick a song to play on demand, they can customize playlists by genre and category. Sony BMG plans to appeal the verdict.
Online community and social networking application creator PathConnect is providing an online platform to help people raise money for their pet causes. The company is currently working with Jessica Biel and Make The Difference Network to allow non-profits to solicit donations and recruit potential donors in an online social networking environment. In addition to video clips of Next and her upcoming comedy, Now I Pronounce You Chuck and Larry, Biel’s profile page includes a link to MTDN.com, which she co-founded with her father and cause-marketer Kent McBride.
~ TECHNOLOGY DEALS, MERGERS AND SKIRMISHES ~
The Weather Channel is planning to spend more than $50 million on the launch of its HD channel, which so far has secured carriage on DirecTV beginning September 2007. A new state-of-the-art studio, digital editing software, graphics equipment and digital storage facilities are all on the shopping list. When the studio is up and running, the network will begin to transition to producing all its programming in HD. TWC plans to break ground on the facility May 2, which marks its 25th anniversary.
Motorola will demonstrate two set-top boxes that contain antennas allowing subscribers to pick up over-the-air terrestrial digital signals at the Cable Show later this month. The single-tuner set top boxes are designed to give cable operators leverage during ongoing retransmission agreement talks, according to Multichannel News, as they would allow cable subscribers to pick up local stations even if they are blacked out through the headend.

Competition to draw more click-throughs to big news stories is driving up search marketing costs for major media sites, according to The Wall Street Journal. News sites and portals pay companies such as Google and Yahoo a per-click fee to make sure their sites turn up in keyword searches. Demand was so high following the Virginia Tech Shooting that media companies paid as much as $5 per-click for relevant search terms.
Fox filed a patent to develop proprietary technology with Tivo to allow advertisers and agencies to swap their own ads out within a commercial pod with updated, timely spots. President of Sales for Fox Broadcasting Jon Nesvig discussed the device at a MediaPost-sponsored event last week. Fox and other networks are currently negotiating with advertisers about including DVR live plus ratings during this year’s upfront deals, and the ability to swap out stale commercials with relevant ones would go a long way to tip the scales in the networks’ favor.
The proposed merger between Google and DoubleClick may cause internal strife at the company due to conflict of interest, according to The New York Times. DoubleClick’s Performics division is designed to help clients achieve better search results by providing organic rankings, which includes sometimes recommending other search engines besides Google. One scenario is that Google will sell off Performics before the deal goes through.

Nielsen will begin identifying the number of HDTV homes in its national sample for Local People Meter markets beginning in November. Nielsen defines HD homes alternatively as a home equipped with an HDTV and a tuner or as a home equipped with both set and tuner that receives at least one exclusively HD network. The company plans to discuss which definition to use going forward with clients.

The Sopranos Ultimate Hits is an interactive scavenger hunt that tests fans’ knowledge of HBO‘s hit show, currently winding down to its series finale. The Flash-based game challenges Comcast.net users to race against the clock and rummage through a city dump for metaphoric clues that relate back to infamous hits from the series. Players have to find and properly identify clues that represent the killer, weapon, location and victim from 6 memorable “hits”. Play the game before June 10 and you can register for a chance to win $5,000.
