MIPTV 2012:

The producer behind several of The Amazing Race franchises outside the US, activeTV is premiering the reality series Food That Rocks! at MIPTV.  The series stars celebrity rock n’ roll chef Aaron Harvie as he travels to such cities as Los Angeles, New York, Seattle and London to visit homes of rock bands including Guns N Roses, Blondie, Nirvana, The Rolling Stones, Cold Play and more to find out why the bands patronize certain restaurants and what makes them rock.  activeTV recently inked an exclusive development deal with Harvie to create this series and will produce 13 one-hour episodes with production beginning this fall.

AMC/Sundance Channel Global has picked up the rights to a variety of programs: Weeds was acquired for Sundance Channel in France and French Benelux via a deal with Lionsgate involving the series rights through season four; Damages was bought for Sundance Channel in Spain and Portugal through a deal with Sony Pictures Television including rights to the series through season five; the crime drama series The Straits was acquired with premiere window rights for Sundance Channel in Eastern Europe, Spain, Portugal, Greece, Turkey, France, Benelux and select territories in Asia through a deal with DCD Rights; and the drama miniseries The Slap was purchased for its premiere window rights to air on Sundance Channel in Dutch Benelux via an agreement with DCD Rights which expands the channel’s previously-acquired rights for the miniseries in Eastern Europe, Spain, Portugal, Greece, Turkey and Asia.

Discovery Enterprise International is also exclusively launching D10, a new short-form series that can be adapted for any client on any platform.  D10 uses Discovery’s archive of more than 10,000 hours of content to offer up one to two minute clips of the best top 10 moments from the company’s roster of global brands including Discovery Channel, TLC, Animal Planet, Science Channel and Investigation Discovery.

Independent distributor DRG picked up the rights to the new format Million Dollar Neighbourhood and has further sold the rights to the first season with 10 one-hour episodes to OWN: Oprah Winfrey Network in the US.  The series is produced by Force Four Entertainment and launched in Canada in January 2012 and was also renewed for a second season after airing five episodes.

The global TV rights to a trio of reality shows, Project Runway All Stars, Project Accessory and Project Runway was granted to FremantleMedia Enterprises (FME).  FME holds the worldwide rights to the three series (excluding US, Canada and the UK) and is presenting the three titles at MIPTV.  Project Runway All Stars with 12 one-hour eps is produced by The Weinstein Company and Bunim/Murray for Lifetime (US); Project Accessory is produced by The Weinstein Company and Good Bye Pictures for Lifetime (US); and Project Runway, back for a ninth season, is produced by The Weinstein Company, FULL PICTURE and Bunim/Murray for Lifetime (US).

Morgan Spurlock has joined FremantleMedia Enterprises (FME) via a new first-look deal with his production company, Warrior Poets.  Additionally, FME has brought the 10-episode one-hour series Morgan Spurlock’s New Britannia to MIPTV.  The series takes a look at the eccentricities of British culture and was originally commissioned by and will soon debut on Sky Atlantic HD.  Furthermore, FME is also premiering Spurlock’s Failure Club with 12 one-hour eps at MIPTV and has picked up the rights to Spurlock’s docu-series A Day in the Life with 16 half-hour eps.

Also from FremantleMedia Enterprises, the new drama series Hit & Miss from producer Paul Abbott and starring Chloe Sevigny was sold to broadcasters ABC2 in Australia; TVNZ in New Zealand; and HOT in Israel.  The series was originally commissioned by Sky Atlantic HD in the UK and is a co-production between AbbottVision and Red Production Company.  Last year, DirecTV picked up the broadcast rights to Hit & Miss for the US.

FremantleMedia has sold the entertainment format The X Factor to 40 territories including Sweden’s TV4 and Rustavi 2 in Georgia.  Simon Cowell’s Syco owns the format which is produced or licensed by FremantleMedia globally.

ohm:TV is serving up the new reality format JobAct at MIPTV.  JobAct, created by German-based independent educational organization Projektfabrik, will prepare unemployed young adults for the job market by using learning techniques through theatrical teaching and personal development.

SevenOne International forged an exclusive multi-year volume distribution deal with Larry Levinson Productions (LLP) for its upcoming production roster.  LLP produces US TV movies and miniseries for major broadcast networks including ABC, NBC and CBS as well as cable channels such as TNT, Lifetime and Hallmark.

Development is underway on a one-hour original drama series titled Treasures by Shaftesbury and The company P in partnership with the European Broadcasting Union.  Treasures is about a group of adventurers who together are participating in a global treasure hunt that could change the course of civilization.  The series will integrate scripted dramatic content, interactive online, mobile and social media content as well as live events.

Cyn’s Notes from MIPTV 2012:  Every city has a rhythm, a cadence, and certainly Cannes is no exception. Even though this is an incredibly busy week, and people are running mad-dash from appointment to appointment, intensely conversing and then quickly moving on again — it behooves us to take a moment between meetings to just breath.  The French are wonderfully skilled at this breathing thing.  Stopping at a cafe, you find the waiters running around like crazy, but the patrons are sitting, sipping, dining, talking, watching, letting the sun catch their face.  Partaking in this is like listening to two concerts at the same time — the high energy pop concert of the service staff and the softer Sunday morning baroque of the patrons.  Quite lovely and refreshing. I vow to do this more in New York City, but I don’t believe the waiters would allow me to linger as long as the French.  Quick sidebar — my passport was not stamped by the agent at Customs when I arrive in France – rather the agent came around the counter and just looked at each of our passports, compared with our face and assuming they matched, let us pass.  I wonder if there will be an issue as I attempt to leave the country later this week.  Tell the kids if I’m not back by Saturday, France wouldn’t let me leave.  Shucks.
