Cynopsis: Kids!

4/02/07

Good morning. It’s Monday, April 2, 2007 and this is your first early morning briefing.

DIC Entertainment, Geffen Records and Poets Road have teamed up to launch KEWL, a new tweentargeted brand, with a celebrity music-driven branded magazine, a website and a TV review series, currently in development and tentatively called Everything KEWL.  The first issue of KEWL magazine, including a printing of 500,000+ copies, will be available nationwide in retail outlets including Claire’s, FYE, Sam Goody, Skechers, Suncoast, Toys ‘R Us among others.  KEWL will also feature fashion, quizzes, advice, horoscopes and posters.  The second issue of KEWL will be published in June 2007.  In conjunction with the debut of the magazine, a corresponding website, www.kewlmag.com , has been launched and will be updated daily and will feature user submitted content and contests.  The TV series, Everything KEWL, is expected to feature information about new tween-targeted movies/TV shows/games/music/gadgets/style and will be hosted by SPG: The Slumber Party Girls.  Poets Road is a new media design and brand development company.

MORE KIDS STUFF

In addition to replays of the full 20th Annual Kids Choice Awards show, Nickelodeon plans to televise Kids Choice Awards: Best of the Mess, a 30-minute special featuring highlights of the program, which will air first tomorrow, Tuesday, April 3 at 5p, and several times thereafter.  Viewers can also watch the 30-minute version of the show beginning next week on TurboNick, Nick.com’s broadband video service.  (check out KCA winners further below)

Foothill Entertainment, Inc. has acquired the worldwide distribution rights to Planet Bizzaro, The World According to Zoomer (52×11′, 26×25′), outside of Asia and Australasia, from Singapore-based Studio Bizzaro.  Targeted to tweens, the series is a mix of live-action and high-tech puppetry, featuring miniature backgrounds, that revolves around the online friendship between an Earthling named Amber and Zoomer, an alien.  Unaware that Zoomer is an alien who lives on Boomer, a dust-ball planet about 317 light years away, Amber relates her frustrations and concerns about things that are wrong in her world to him.  In response, Zoomer regales Amber with stories about the ways that he and his friends deal with things like peer pressure, each episode presenting a different issue and solutions.  Created by puppeteer Brian Zimmerman and co-produced by Brad Bowyer, Planet Bizzaro was originally designed as a series of public service announcements.  The project went on to be produced as a series of 12 shorts called What Planet Are You From, eventually evolving into Planet Bizzaro, The World According To Zoomer.

PBS KIDS Sprout dances into spring with Sprout’s Dance Party, a week-long event that will run Friday, April 20-Friday, April 27, 6a-6p each day.  Coinciding with National Dance Week, Sprout’s Dance Party will feature the world TV movie premiere of Angelina Ballerina’s All Dancers On Deck on Friday, April 20 at 5p, as well as a special presentation of Angelina Ballerina’s Princess Dance on Saturday, April 21 at 9a.  Additionally, dance-themed episodes of series including Bob The Builder, Sesame Street, Teletubbies, Jay Jay the Jet Plane, Dragon Tale and Angelina Ballerina, will air each day during the event, as will viewer submitted videos featuring preschoolers dancing.  Viewer submitted videos will also be available on SproutOnline.com and Sprout On Demand.

4Kids Entertainment will offer its new animated action series Chaotic (40×30′ Hi Def) to buyers later this month at MIPTV, April 16-20 in France.  Chaotic premiered in the US in January 2007 on 4Kids TV, and in Canada this March on Teletoon.  The Chaotic multi-platform trading card game is set to bow this May.  Vancouver’s Bardel Entertainment is the hi-def animator for the series. 4Kids has exclusive rights to represent Chaotic worldwide across broadcast, home video, music and merchandise licensing

MARKETING/LICENSING

Cartoon Network plans to showcase The Secret Saturdays and Santo, El Enmascarado de Plata (the silver masked man) two new animated properties, both currently in production, at the Licensing 2007 International.  The Secret Saturdays is a comedy/action series about Doc, Drew and Zak Saturday, a family of scientists who live in a hidden base and work as part of a network of scientists to protect the world from unexplained and terrifying things.  Santo is based on the legend of the wrestling hero, Santo, El Enmascarado de Plata, who uses his mask’s mystical powers to fight evildoers both inside and outside the ring.  Additionally, the network will continue to build programs around existing properties including The Grim Adventures of Billy & Mandy, Camp Lazlo, My Gym Partner’s A Monkey, and Ed, Edd n Eddy.  Licensing 2007 International will be held June 19-21, 2007, at the Javitz Convention Center, NYC.

STONE SOUP

Nickelodeon handed out orange blimps at its 20th Annual Kids Choice Awards (KCA) on Saturday, March 31.  Hosted by Justin Timberlake, the 2007 KCA show was originally slated as a 90-minute special (8-9:30p), but the show ultimately ran for an additional 20-minutes with credits rolling at 9:50p.  This year’s scream-fest featured the sliming of lost of celebrities, not to mention kids/parents/celebrities in the audience, over the course of the evening including Jackie Chan, Chris Tucker, Tobey Maguire, Timberlake, Steve Carell, and Vince Vaughn.  Kids voted in droves, 40+ million cast votes last month, 13+ million more votes than last year, via Nick.com, Nicktropolis and TurboNick as well as through texts on their mobile phones.  While Timberlake won for top male singer, he surrendered his crown as the two-time winner for the best burp to the entire audience of kids, who together created a burp extraordinaire.  Kids selected Ben Stiller as the celebrity they’d ‘most want to be’ for this year’s Wannabe Award.  Produced by Nickelodeon Productions in association with bob Bain Productions, the show was seen in upwards of 205 million households across Nickelodeon’s 34 channels around the world.  This year’s KCA Winners include favorites in:

Oh, and by the way, do you know what today is?  It’s Cynopsis’ 10th Anniversary!  10 years ago today the very first Cynopsis was distributed – then called News of the Day, and distributed by hand and by fax to all six subscribers.  Two of those six are, remarkably, still subscribers – Jack Oken, currently the GM/Strategic Measurement Initiatives at Nielsen Media Research, and then the President of MMT Sales, and my boss; and Christina Cygan of Donavan Data Systems who 10 years ago worked in the MMT Sales Research Department.  Talk about reader loyalty!  It’s been quite an adventure these ten years, from a half dozen subscribers to more than 55,000 and a currently daily readership with passalong of more than 144,000 worldwide. Later on this morning check your inbox for another Cynopsis email which will give you a little more detail on our ten years and how we’re all going to celebrate this year!
