Good morning, it’s Monday, April 2, 2007 and this is your first early morning briefing.

According to the most recent news reports, Tribune Co. may be close to a decision, and seems to be leaning toward the bid from Sam Zell.  You’ll recall both the Zell bid and the 11th hour sweetened bid from Ron Burkle and Eli Broad, offered employee stock ownership plans.  Reports indicate Tribune went back to both sets of bids and requested a little bit more.  From Mr. Zell, the request was to raise the per share offer from $33/share to $34, thereby matching the Burkle/Broad offer.  After some back and forth, The New York Times reports Zell did raise his bid to $34/share.  From Burkle and Broad, Tribune had requested better contractual terms.  However, at the end of the weekend, all reports seem to indicate Zell is the frontrunner.

~ MORE GOOD STUFF ~

BBC America has renewed its “cold case” crime-solving drama Waking the Dead for a sixth season starting April 23 at 9p. In the six two-hour episodes, Trevor Eve is back as Chief Inspector Boyd along with a new pathologist played by Tara FitzGerald.

At its recent annual owners meeting in Phoenix, the NFL has lifted its ban on local stations sideline cameras during games, which limited coverage to pool coverage by two stations, one from each team’s local market. The Radio-Television News Directors Association complained to the league when the ban went into effect a year ago, saying it was a “discriminatory and unprecedented policy” that was “subverting the American tradition of free press.” Now the NFL will allow up to 10 station crews on the sidelines, five from the home city and five from the local market of the visiting team. The stations will also provide pool coverage for other stations. Originally, the NFL said the limitation on station sideline cameras was to protect exclusive NFL video from unauthorized use elsewhere, particularly on the internet.

CBS Corporation has sold seven radio stations in Fresno to Fresno-based Peak Broadcasting, LLC for $90 million. The stations include KMJ-AM, KFPT-AM, KWYE-FM, KSKS-FM, KFJK-FM, KOQO-FM and KMGV-FM. Currently, Peak Broadcasting has another application pending approval from the FCC to purchase six stations in Boise from Clear Channel Communications.

Oh, and by the way, do you know what today is?  It’s Cynopsis’ 10th Anniversary!  10 years ago today the very first Cynopsis was distributed – then called News of the Day, and distributed by hand and by fax to all six subscribers.  Two of those six are, remarkably, still subscribers – Jack Oken, currently the GM/Strategic Measurement Initiatives at Nielsen Media Research, and then the President of MMT Sales, and my boss; and Christina Cygan of Donavan Data Systems who 10 years ago worked in the MMT Sales Research Department.  Talk about reader loyalty!  It’s been quite an adventure these ten years, from a half dozen subscribers to more than 55,000 and a currently daily readership with passalong of more than 144,000 worldwide. Later on this morning check your inbox for another Cynopsis email which will give you a little more detail on our ten years and how we’re all going to celebrate this year!

A news conference scheduled to take place in midtown NYC today will announce Clay Jackson, a 6’6″ real estate agent from Richmond, Virginia, is the new Ol’ Lonely Repairman.  He steps into pretty big shoes – previous Repairmen have been Jesse White, Gordon Jump and most recently Hardy Rawls.  Jackson has no acting experience, but they say he truly embodies the traits of the Repairman – reliable and dependable.
