CYNTHIA TURNER’S
Cynopsis

04/25/05

Good morning.  It’s Monday, April 25, 2005, and this is your first early morning briefing.

Nielsen Media Research issued the following statement in response to the disclosure about the relationships among Don’t Count Us Out, News Corp., and the Glover Park Group political lobbying firm:

         “The Glover Park Group is admitting for the first time that it created, organized and directed the activities of the Don’t Count Us Out organization at the behest of News Corp.  Don’t Count Us Out has always maintained that it was an independent group of community activists.  However, this admission, which is found on Glover Park’s own website as a “case study” to attract more clients, clearly shows that it was always acting to advance the corporate interests of News Corp. and its TV stations, which experienced lower ratings after Nielsen replaced papers diaries with more accurate electronic Local People Meters in major television markets.
         “Glover Park Group also admitted directing a campaign to disrupt Nielsen’s operations in which ‘calls and e-mails were targeted at Nielsen executives, shutting down their corporate switchboard.’
         “Glover Park does not describe what incentives were used to ‘enlist’ members to the Don’t Count Us Out coalition.
         “Glover Park does admit, however, to implementing a ‘legislative strategy … targeting key Senators and Congressmen.’  Glover Park also maintains that the Senate Commerce Committee is considering legislation that would regulate the ratings business when, in fact, no such legislation is pending.”

At the Glover Park Group website, the company describes itself as “offering comprehensive client service from the earliest strategic planning to the final execution of advocacy and image advertising campaigns.”  Here is the full text of what is included in the Glover Park Group website, also available at http://www.gloverparkgroup.com/content/casestudies/casestudies_count.shtml

         “Nielsen Media Research was set to launch a controversial new television rating system. Strong evidence suggested that the new system could undercount African Americans and Hispanics, as well as younger viewers – and in doing so, severely penalize networks like FOX and UPN that tailor their content to these audiences. FOX parent-company Newscorp turned to the Glover Park Group to devise a campaign to fight back. GPG enlisted community activists and organizations across the country in the Don’t Count Us Out coalition. The coalition launched a grassroots campaign, including public protests and rallies; television, radio and print ads were run in both in affected markets and inside the Beltway; calls and e-mails were targeted at Nielsen executives, shutting down their corporate switchboard; and a legislative strategy was implemented targeting key Senators and Congressmen. As a result, Nielsen was forced to delay the roll out of the new system in New York City and currently the Senate Commerce Committee is considering legislation that would, for the first time, mandate government regulation of the Nielsen monopoly.”

Don’t Count Us Out describes itself in all of its press releases as “Don’t Count Us Out, (DCUO) – a group of grassroots, labor and media industry representatives raising public awareness about the under-counting of minority consumers by Nielsen and its Local People Meters (LPM) system.”  In a statement from DCUO, the coalition says it has never hidden the fact that News Corp. has helped it financially, and that at this point Nielsen is just trying to “… change the topic from the plain fact that right now Nielsen’s monopoly ratings service is not fully accredited in any market in the United States except one. Nielsen should spend more time fixing its broken ratings system and less time slinging mud at community activists.”  Certainly more will be heard from these groups in the days ahead.

* NEW ORDERS / DEVELOPMENT / PRODUCTION *

NBC Universal has signed playwright Julianne Grossman to a development deal to turn her one woman stage show, From Bonkers to Botox, into a series for television.  According to Hollywood Reporter, Grossman will develop the show as a 30m comedy for next year’s development cycle.

MTV has ordered 20 eps of a new series called Score, with host Ryan Cabrera.  The idea is two contestants, both vying for the attention of a potential date, will write and perform an original song.  Cabrera will also work with both contestants on their music, lyrics and performances.  The songs will also be made available on MTV’s website. Casting begins this summer and the show is looking at a fall launch.

* CASTING UPDATES *

NBC:

  • Four Kings (Warner Bros. TV/KoMut) has added Shane McRae as the fourth king after Seth Green, Josh Cooke, and Todd Grinnell.  Kiele Sanchez also stars.  The concept is about four friends, all guys, who grew up together and now are living together in NYC.

* MORE GOOD STUFF *

Put the speculation aside, the deal is done – Will & Grace will be back for an 8th season, which may well be their last season. NBC has ordered 24 eps and a clip show.  There was some speculation NBC and the cast would not come to terms after expected salary cuts for each of the players, but all has been ironed out, and the cast in fact will get salary increases.  NBC will pay less, however, in the license fee for the show to an estimated $4 million/ep, down by a million from the current season.

Music cable network Fuse will try to appeal to its core 12-34 audience with two new series debuting in May and June and four new projects currently in development for 2005:

  • Metal Asylum:  With VJ host Juliya, this series offers a wide range of metal videos, from newcomers to Judas Priest and Black Sabbath. Fans will also have an opportunity to send in requests online and through text messaging. Premieres May 9;
  • Hip Hop Confidential: VJ Marianela introduces both emerging hip-hop artists and multi-platinum favorites in this video flow show that provides the inside scoop on today’s acts. Premieres June 1;

In Development for Q4 2005 – 2006

  • Fuse Video Remix provides viewers an online opportunity to edit their own video remixes of today’s biggest songs, and the best will make it on the show;
  • Loose Lips is a game show where contestants are invited to show off their knowledge about their favorite artists and lyrics;
  • Love Shuffle attempts to play matchmaker based on two individuals’ mp3 playlists.  The contestants also learn about each other via music based Q&As; and
  • Mad Dash to the Music Stash is an a-viewer scavenger hunt through New York City.  Guided by music-based clues, viewers hunt for rock memorabilia, and once they decipher the video and song lyric clues, they’ll use their wireless devices and email to announce their finds.
