Bravo set the premiere date of its new creative competition series Work of Art: The Next Great Artist for June 9 at 11p. The series, produced by Magical Elves and Sarah Jessica Parker’s production company, Pretty Matches, showcases fourteen up-and-coming artists in New York as they battle for a solo show at the Brooklyn Museum and a cash prize of $100,000.

Planet Green approved a new six-episode series, The John Patrick Show, produced by Honest Engine Productions. The half-hour series takes an inside look at eco-friendly fashion designer John Patrick who creates sustainable haute couture under his line, John Patrick Organic. Planet Green will debut the new show during first quarter 2011 as part of VERGE, the network’s new primetime programming block.

ESPN’s live coverage of the 2010 Masters Tournament last Thursday from 4-738p tallied an average of 4.9 million viewers, which marks the most-viewed golf telecast in cable history. This 4.9 million viewership figure also represents a +47% increase over last year’s comparable Thursday coverage of nearly 3.4 million viewers.

Horse TV’s H-Span at www.horsetv.com opened the new series, State of the Games in association with the World Games 2010 Foundation. The series was created to allow top officials of the 2010 Alltech FEI World Equestrian Games the chance to virtually interact with the public in addition to providing updates and interviews about the games scheduled for the first time in the US at Kentucky Horse Park in Lexington, KY from September 25-October 10. Each 60m episode is filmed in different locations using both a town hall and a round table style setting with guests encompassing officials and celebrities.

Actress Dixie Carter, 70, remembered for her Southern charm, elegant beauty and her role as the quick-tongued Julia Sugarbaker on the TV series Designing Women, died on Saturday morning. Information about the cause of her death and place were not released. In addition to starring in the CBS sitcom Designing Women which ran from 1986 to 1993, Dixie was nominated for an Emmy Award in 2007 for her seven-episode arc on ABC’s Desperate Housewives. She also appeared on the series Family Law and Different Strokes. A native of Tennessee, Dixie had been married to fellow actor Hal Holbrook since 1984.

Ben Silverman’s new multimedia studio, Electus announced its development slate of TV and digital programming. Electus Distribution, the studio’s international distribution unit established this year with Shine International will manage sales of the international TV and digital programming.

  • Munch Madness: The National Food Tournament – National food competition series where competitors compete in different food categories in a tournament bracket format. Produced in partnership with Sharp Entertainment.
  • Big Time Spender – Based on the popular Chinese game show where contestants from different backgrounds battle to become the nation’s smartest shopper. Co-produced by Electus Distribution, Mark Burnett Productions and Swedish-based multi-platform TV developers Bringiton.
  • Hiccups – Electus Distribution acquired the international and US rights to this Canadian TV series.
  • Ready, Set, Dance – Dance competition series combining the web and TV.
  • Abbott Reif Hameiri Production Company – Electus Distribution made an agreement with Israel-based Abbot Reif Hameiri Production Co. to develop its programming in the US for all platforms.
  • Cuckoo’s Nest – Electus Distribution picked up the international and US rights to this Israeli format, an interactive game show produced by the Abbott Reif Hameiri Production Co.
  • TLV – Electus Distribution acquired the international and US rights to this docu-drama from Abbott Reif Hameiri Production Co.
  • Stylized with Patricia Field – Electus is partnering with actress Vanessa Williams and her producing partner Michael Gruber to co-produce this online series featuring famous stylist Patricia Field, behind Sex and the City, The Devil Wears Prada and Ugly Betty.

Warner Bros. International Television Production is offering local production format rights to the new reality project One Mass Dance. The series is produced by Stone & Company Entertainment, executive producer Scott A. Stone and Warner Horizon Television.

Globo TV International has sold the Latin American telenovela Paradise City to ten countries in three months. The countries picking up the series’ broadcast rights include Argentina, Chile, Costa Rica, Bolivia, Cuba, El Salvador, Ecuador, Paraguay, Peru and Uruguay.

Picture Box Distribution has sold its lifestyle series Anna and Kristina’s Grocery Bag (39 eps, 30m) to Beep Omnimedia in Italy. The series is produced by Worldwide Bag Media for Canada’s W Network. Additionally, the series was sold to Zeste! (French Canada); MTV Oy (Finland); TV Paprika/Chello (Hungary); Ananey (Israel); Canal Plus (Poland); and LiTV (Singapore, Thailand and Indonesia).

Comcast International Media Group (CIMG) sold the format rights for E! Entertainment Television’s series Reality Hell in Italy, France, Germany, Sweden and Denmark.

Metan Development Group made a deal with Tianjin TV in China to produce and distribute its series Icons throughout China.

Insight Production Company Ltd. is offering two new projects about the origins of Greenpeace. The projects are the dramatic scripted miniseries Greenpeace: Making Waves and the feature documentary Greenpeace: How to Change the World produced in cooperation with Met Film, Daniel Films and Earthstock Films.

To commemorate Discovery Communication’s 25th anniversary, the company’s international program sales team is offering past titles under the umbrella “Discovery Classic’s” at MIPTV. The programming package culls various titles from Discovery’s roster of networks including Discovery Channel, Animal Planet, Discovery Health and Discovery Kids taking titles from many genres including factual entertainment, ancient civilizations, science, history, health and animals. A few of the titles include are Decisions that Shook the World, Science of the Impossible to Curse of Tutankhamun.

And on a side note … some things I love about Cannes … The street musicians who play only iconic French tunes; the beautiful blue waters of the Mediterranean; the number of women “of a certain age” who all seem to own the exact same silky terrier; the little French children who are dressed right out of a fashion magazine; the attitude that a cup of coffee should not be walked down the street in a cardboard cup, but rather lingered over whilst reading the paper or chatting with friends; lunch on the beach in the sun where you are permitted to take as long as you like to enjoy your meal.  And last but not least … the older guard at the press credential registration building who upon my very American “Good Morning” replied with his best French-accented Texas-twanged “Howdy!”  What could be more welcoming? Yes, Cannes is a lovely place.

~ DISTRIBUTION, CLEARANCE & COVERAGE ~

CBS Television Distribution announced Wheel of Fortune and Jeopardy! were renewed through the 2013-2014 season. This renewal marks Wheel of Fortune’s 31st season and Jeopardy’s 30th season. In the midst of the renewal effort, both shows are currently cleared in 35% of the US on the ABC O&Os: WABC/New York, KABC/Los Angeles, WLS/Chicago, WPVI/Philadelphia, KGO/San Francisco, WTVD/Raleigh-Durham and WFSN/Fresno. Additional station groups renewing the shows include Allbritton Communications, Fisher Broadcasting and Meredith Broadcasting Group. Both are produced by Sony Pictures Television.

Syfy acquired the rights to the online series Riese from its distributor Fireworks International, the television and digital distribution unit of ContentFilm plc. Syfy Digital made the deal involving all 10 episodes of Riese (two five-part episode seasons) with the second season premiering exclusively on Syfy.com. Both seasons one and two will launch digitally this fall. Syfy may also develop the web series into a television series, similar to how Syfy’s current series Sanctuary made it on the air.

Beginning next Sunday, Zee TV provider of South Asian entertainment programming is providing a broadcasting bridge between India and the US by offering English subtitles so US viewers can watch their favorite Indian soap operas, dramas and reality shows without having the plot revealed in advance. Zee TV is also introducing several new shows to its line-up including Dance India Dance L’il Masters; Keshav Pandit, a Robin Hood-style story of a man who stands up to injustice in the defense of the ordinary man; and the soap operas Do Saheliyaan, Kismat Ki Kathputaliyaan and Yahaan Mein Ghar Ghar Kheli. Zee TV is available via all major cable service providers in the US.

A new fashion channel, Fashion | One TV is ready to launch across the globe via free-to-air (FTA) and direct-to-home (DTH) satellites. Fashion | One will showcase more than 300 shows and 600 new clips each season focused on glamour, beauty, style and international fashion weeks to fashion tips as well as celebrity gossip and entertainment news. Fashion | One is a division of Los Angeles-based Bigfoot Entertainment, an international entertainment company that produces independent films and TV programs for the US and global markets. Already, Fashion | One has a presence in such fashion capital cities as Paris, Milan, Los Angeles and Hong Kong.

~ PRODUCTION & DEVELOPMENT ~

CBS ordered a pilot for a new version of the classic game show Pyramid from Sony Pictures Television and executive producer Michael Davies (Who Wants to be a Millionaire) who is set to executive produce through his Sony-based Embassy Row. CBS may insert the new Pyramid along with another game show, into the slot soon-to-be-vacated by daytime drama As the World Turns in September. The new Pyramid pilot is currently looking for a host. The original Pyramid began in 1973 with Dick Clark as host and over the years other renditions have been on the air including the recent syndicated version hosted by Donny Osmond in 2002-2004.

Actor Kevin Pollak (Usual Suspects, Cop Out) is making his directorial debut on the new web series Vamped Out going live starting today through web and mobile video content platform, Babelgum via its Comedy Channel at www.babelgum.com/vampedout. The series will have six total episodes with each subsequent episode airing on Mondays over the next five weeks. The series is about a modern-day struggling actor (Jason Antoon) who is also a vampire trying to make a living in L.A. Pollak also co-stars and created the series.

MTV renewed its frosh reality series The Buried Life for a sophomore season, per THR. The show follows four friends who go on a road trip to complete their bucket list of 100 things to do before they die. The show is produced by Reveille’s Howard T. Owens and Mark Koops in addition to Adam Paul.

Casting Call: WCBS-TV is hosting an open casting call tomorrow for CBS’ reality show Big Brother. The casting call is from 12-3p at Empire City Casino at Yonkers Raceway, 810 Yonkers Ave., Yonkers, NY 10704. Applicants must be 21 years of age at the time of application. A copy of a passport is required along with a copy of a driver’s license or state issued ID. Also required are two photos (one headshot and one body shot). Camera operators will be on hand to tape applicants for a total of two minutes.

Casting Call: Zee TV is giving US viewers a chance to showcase their vocal skills and talents in the Sa Re Ga Ma Pa Auditions 2010. US viewers who are 16 to 21 years old can enter online at www.zeetvusa.com by sending a DVD of three songs with or without music. The deadline is this Friday. A Zee TV selection committee will choose the singers who will audience for the talent competition show Sa Re Ga Ma Pa in India. Wednesday  A18-49 Analysis: FOX held its Wednesday night lead at 4.4/13 among A18-49, according to final national ratings from Nielsen. FOX opened the night a winner with Human Target at 2.2/7 and a tie occurred for second place between NBC’s Minute To Win It and UNIV’s Hasta que el Dinero Nos Separe at 1.8/6 each. American Idol stole the show for FOX during 9p at 6.7/18 while CBS’ Criminal Minds followed at 3.5/10. NBC nudged into first place at 10p with Law & Order: SVU at 2.5/7 and CBS’ CSI: NY was a mere tenth of a rating point behind at 2.4/7.

Thursday  A18-49 Analysis: CBS led an overall clean sweep Thursday with 3.6/11 A18-49, according to final national ratings from Nielsen. At 8p, Survivor won with 3.8/12 and FOX’s Bones was next in line with 2.8/9. In the 9p hour, CBS moved in CSI which came first with 3.4/10 and FOX played second fiddle again, this time with Fringe at 2.3/7. Then at 10p, CBS’ The Mentalist did best with 3.5/10 while NBC’s The Marriage Ref was #2 at 2.1/6.

~ EXECUTIVE MOVES ~

WE tv and Wedding Central added Marjorie Levy as VP/Development and Megan Lawrence as Director/Development. Both appointments are effective immediately and Marjorie, who reports to John Miller, SVP/Original Productions and Development, and Megan, who reports to Marjorie Levy, will be based in New York City. The pair will supervise the development of original series and specials for the networks. Additionally, WE tv and Wedding Central moved Danielle Ostroske to the development team as Development Producer. Theresa Patiri, VP/Production Management, Operations and Administration will continue to manage current productions as well as business affairs, show and talent contract negotiations, budgets and international and domestic program sales.

Troice Jones was promoted to VP to manage the Dallas Rangers Sales Team at Continental Television Sales, a unit of Katz Television Group. Troice will be based out of Continental’s Dallas office. Troice has been with Continental for 12 years, beginning in the company’s Detroit office then transferring to Atlanta and in 2004, she was appointed Sales Manager of the Dallas Rangers Sales Team in Dallas.

Effective immediately, Mohamed Sayed was upped to CFO with Channel One Network, an Alloy Media + Marketing Company. Most recently, Mohamed was VP/Finance for Channel One Network.

Comcast Interactive Media (CIM) added Cathy Goepfert as National Sales Director of Fancast, the national entertainment destination for watching TV online. Cathy’s role will concentrate on increasing advertising partners and implementing new advertising/sales efforts to benefit the online destination. Fancast will continue to be sold via Comcast Digital Entertainment. Previously, Cathy worked for DailyCandy, a sister company to CIM where she headed entertainment advertising. In her new role, Cathy will report to Scott Schiller, SVP/Advertising Sales, CIM and Comcast Digital Entertainment.

Full-service media agency, RJ Palmer based in New York City tapped Frances Croke Page to head its new RJ Palmer Entertainment Media division as VP/Director. Frances has more than 25 years of experience in communications from media planning and buying to creating opportunities for clients including American Express, Bank of America, Coca-Cola, Kellogg’s and more.

Lee Raftery advanced to SVP/International Marketing with Comcast International Media Group (CIMG). Lee will head all marketing activities for CIMG’s channels including E! Entertainment Television, The Style Network, G4 and Golf Channel as well as supervise the company’s international marketing groups in the US, UK and Hong Kong. In addition, Lee is in charge of CIMG’s international marketing plans for the company’s channel properties, program sales and its digital and new media content outside the US. Based in CIMG’s Los Angeles headquarters, he will also now oversee CIMG’s L.A.-based on-air production team.
