Cynopsis: Sports
09/30/11

Good morning. It’s Friday, September 30, 2011, and this is your first early morning Sports briefing.

Wednesday night’s ESPN MLB telecast that saw Baltimore take down Boston’s postseason hopes score as the network’s most-viewed Wednesday night telecast since 1998, according to Nielsen. The game (which wasn’t shown in the local markets of the teams competing) averaged 1.55 million households with 2.1 million viewers. Afterward, the live coverage of Tampa Bay’s extra-inning comeback victory over the Yankees raised the bar even higher, with nearly 2.8 million households and more than 3.8 million viewers. Meanwhile, ESPN2’s Wednesday Night Baseball telecast, in which Philadelphia ended Atlanta’s postseason hopes, posted an additional 904,000 household impressions and almost 1.2 million viewers.

On the Air

With the playoff field now set, TBS takes the reins this weekend and has locked in broadcast plans for its exclusive coverage of the League Division Series starting today with a doubleheader. Beginning at4:30p, the channel will air the TBS MLB on Deck presented by Chrysler pre-game show with Matt Winer hosting along with analysts Dennis Eckersley,Cal Ripken and David Wells.Games begin at 5p with the Rangers hosting the Rays. At 8:30p, the channel will feature the Tigers/Yankees. On Saturday, postseason action continues with three games on TBS and one on TNT. At 1:30p, TBS showcases the Brewers/Diamondbacks before moving to the Phillies/Cardinals game at 5p. TNT will air game two of the Rays/Rangers series at 7p with TBS set for the Tigers/Yankees again at 8p.

Meanwhile, MLB is reporting that the league’s average attendance ended a three year skid and grew this season by half of one percent. NL East Champ Phillies led the sport’s attendance for the first time, to draw over 3.6 million fans. Overall attendance this season scored as the fifth-highest in MLB history with 73,425,568.

FOX NASCAR Sunday is making the most of its bloodlines, inking Michael Waltrip to the pre race team next season to take a seat in the Hollywood Hotel alongside his brother Darrell as well as host Chris Myers (no relation). Meanwhile, analyst Jeff Hammond will shift over to the garages and pit road. In addition, Michael, who already works for FOX’s sister network SPEED as well as SHOWTIME series Inside NASCAR, will offer analysis during the race as time permits.

FX drew a best-ever 1.2/2 to the network’s new college football coverage over the weekend which featured the Missouri/Oklahoma Big 12 game. The contest delivered 1.9 million viewers to the network. The channel will next feature a Texas/Iowa St. game tomorrow at 7p.

The Tampa Bay Buccaneers seem ready to break a streak of their own. After ten consecutive regular season games being blacked out on TV, the team appears poised to sell out Monday night’s game against the Colts, a team spokesman told the Tampa Tribune. Home games must be sold out 72 hours ahead of kickoff to dodge a broadcast blackout within a 75-mile radius of the market.

Bell Media’s TSN has entered a long-term multimedia rights deal with the Canadian Curling Association that will allow the channel to continue as the home of curling across Canada through the 2019-20 season. The new deal also includes French-language coverage on Bell Media’s RDS and RDS2 with a record 250 hours of Season of Champions coverage on those channels. In addition, the deal includes multimedia rights, including broadband, mobile, radio and video-on-demand.

The St. Louis Cardinals/Houston Astros game on Wednesday handed FOX Sports Midwest with the channel’s highest ratings ever. The telecast delivered an 18.0 rating, according to Nielsen, as the Cardinals clinched the NL wild card berth. Postgame coverage on the channel scored a 7.2 rating.

CBS Sports Network released the basketball television schedule for the Patriot League’s 2012 season yesterday with 14 men’s and three women’s contests set to air, including both the Men’s and Women’s Championship Game. The Patriot League Men’s Basketball Championship will run on CBS Sports Network for the first time on March 7 at 7p. Coverage begins on Jan. 14 with an Army/Navy matchup in Annapolis, with the women’s game between the two at noon, followed by the men at 2:30p.

GRAND-AM Road Racing has a new CEO, tapping longtime NASCAR executive Ed Bennett to run the sports car sanctioning body. Bennett will continue as an officer of NASCAR, where he serves as a Vice President and Chief Administrative Officer. Tom Bledsoe will continue as president of GRAND-AM with primary responsibility for day-to-day operations of the organization and providing leadership to the industry from a competition and membership perspective.

BTN will debut two new series following the channel’s first conference game of the season this weekend, in which Minnesota visits Michigan. Series Big Ten Icons will return with a special airing featuring the Big Ten’s iconic coaches, beginning with Bo Schembechler. The series will be followed by BTN Live Big, an eight-episode series encouraging community service. The show is hosted by Dhani Jones, and will profile alumni, students and supporters who are “living big” through their service to others. The special debut will run at 4:30p before shifting to its regularly scheduled time of Monday’s at 7:30p.

Sponsorship & Promotion

Canadian channel Rogers Sportsnet is undergoing a rebrand, and will reveal be a new logo, tagline and media theme across the main Sportsnet properties on Monday. The brand campaign was created in-house by Sportsnet Creative Services with an assist from Troika Design Group.

Coca-Cola is teasing its Olympics campaign early, unveiling music producer Mark Ronson’s new song for the company’s Move to the Beat campaign. The song, which was created with the sounds of athletes training, will serve as the soundtrack for commercials, digital outlets as well as brand events during the Games.

Digital Fields

UFC on Versus 6 will stream the preliminary card for the event on Facebook tomorrow. Six fights are set to run online around 5:40p before the main card, toplined by a featherweight title bout between Dominick Cruz and Demetrious Johnson that will air on the network.
