Pre-MIPCOM 2011 News:

Rights management company Target Entertainment based in the UK and independent production firm Back2back Productions are continuing their relationship by co-producing the docu-series, The Changing Face Of … with nine one-hour episodes.  The factual series, available in hi-def, is a collection of specials delving into the images and wardrobes over time of some of the biggest stars.  Target holds all international rights to the series and is taking the series along with Back2back to MIPCOM.  The two companies also co-produced the specials In Search of Pippa Middleton and Kate and The Real Housewives of Anglesey.

Worldwide distribution company, Off The Fence (OTF) forged a deal with Sundance Selects/IFC Films, the film distribution unit of AMC Networks, Inc. The deal allows OTF to distribute the TV and other select rights of 140 titles from Sundance Selects/IFC Films’ catalog to territories globally, excluding the US.

Chris Carter, the creator of The X-Files is coming back to television with a police mystery thriller titled Unique sporting a female character as the lead.  Unique will have a supernatural focus and Carter will write and serve as executive producer.  Media Rights Capital will produce.

ABC picked up a drama titled Turner Loose from ABC Studios about character Bobby Turner, a disgraced Wall Street banker in prison who becomes a lawyer for his fellow inmates.  He eventually finds a way out for himself and a chance for redemption working for the female prosecutor who sent him to prison.

NBC okayed a project from Universal Cable Productions from the co-creators of Numb3rs, Nicolas Falacci and Cheryl Heuton based on the short story When the Women Come Out to Dance by Elmore Leonard, per THR.  FX’s current drama Justified is also based on a short story from the same anthology by Leonard.  NBC’s project is about a Colombian mail-order bride who arrives in Miami and struggles to move on from her past.

Going back and forth between TV and film projects, Seth Gordon just signed a two-year overall deal with Sony Pictures Television (SPT).  Gordon currently is working with SPT as the co-creator and EP of Breaking In, the FOX comedy that is being brought back after it was canceled last May.  Gordon also is an EP on the new SPT comedy in development at FOX with Adam F. Goldberg, who also is a co-creator of Breaking In.  Gordon’s new deal will have him develop new projects for SPT.

The CW’s Nikita promoted Dillon Casey who plays Agent Sean Pierce, from a recurring cast member to a series regular.  Casey’s character was introduced in the season two premiere episode.

A new reality show is set to feature the grandchildren of former South African President Nelson Mandela.  The proposed program will center on Mandela’s granddaughters Dorothy Adjoa Amuah, Zaziwe Dlamini-Manaway and her younger sister Swati Dlamini.  All three were raised in the US and have now returned to South Africa to be near family and their business affairs.  The women’s parents and grandparents will not be part of the show that is scheduled to premiere in early 2012.
