New afternoon entertainment and celebrity news show Tombola debuts on TeleFutura Network beginning October 10 at 5p. Tombola is hosted by a quintet including Marisa del Portillo, Tanya Charry and Carolina Sandoval along with actor/model Andres Garcia Jr. and actress/TV host Alexandra Rodriguez. Tombola offers breaking news, entertainment celebrity gossip, exclusive interviews and more.
Docu-series I Used To Be Fat is back on MTV with a new season starting October 11 at 10p. The premiere episode airs right before a one-hour episode of MTV’s new series Chelsea Settles at 11p. I Used To Be Fat documents ten teenagers who desperately want to lose weight the summer before they begin college. Created by 3 Ball Productions/Eyeworks USA, I Used To Be Fat will also launch on MTV channels globally beginning February 2012.
Also from MTV, the recent season debut of The Real World: San Diego posted the best season premiere in five editions of The Real World. The opening episode delivered a 2.1 rating with P12-34 and close to 2.0 million total viewers.
SPEED handed orders to three new lifestyle series:
- Pumped! is billed as an ambush-style quiz show set at gas stations where customers compete for a cash prize by answering correctly automotive and pop culture questions. The show will have 20 half-hour episodes and premieres in November.
- Hard Parts: South Bronx is a docu-series about a business owner and his team as they search for rare auto parts. SPEED ordered 13 episodes. Production begins in October for a planned second quarter 2012 debut.
- Whipped is a one-hour game show where contestants can test their driving skills on an extreme obstacle course. Production also begins in October for a second quarter 2012 premiere.
- SPEED further gave My Ride Rules an additional 13 episodes for the show’s first season.
- The network also gave second season renewal orders to three series: Dumbest Stuff on Wheels, Car Warriors and Stuntbusters.
- Furthermore, SPEED’s series Pass Time and the weekend morning block consisting of Stacey David’s Gearz, Truck U, Chop Cut Rebuild, Hot Rod TV, Car Crazy, Two Guys Garage and My Classic Car were all granted additional episode orders.
Next Monday, Tr3s: MTV, Musica y Mas debuts a new daily scripted series Popland at 6p centering on Carla (Sara Cobo) and her rise from small town girl to a job in the big city working for the hottest celebrity gossip fan site at Popland.us. Carla finds herself in a paparazzi world of celebrities, parties and a major love affair. Popland has 70 one-hour episodes and features various celebrity guest appearances during the season. Popland airs Monday-Friday at 6p.
KFTY-TV in Santa Rosa, CA was sold to Una Vez Mas, LP based in Dallas by Kansas-based Newport Television, LLC and Oklahoma-based High Plains Broadcasting License Company, LLC. Una Vez Mas owns 40 other TV stations across the country. KFTY-TV is now an Azteca affiliate.
Rights management company Target Entertainment based in the UK and independent production firm Back2back Productions are continuing their relationship by co-producing the docu-series, The Changing Face Of … with nine one-hour episodes. The factual series, available in hi-def, is a collection of specials delving into the images and wardrobes over time of some of the biggest stars. Target holds all international rights to the series and is taking the series along with Back2back to MIPCOM. The two companies also co-produced the specials In Search of Pippa Middleton and Kate and The Real Housewives of Anglesey.
Worldwide distribution company, Off The Fence (OTF) forged a deal with Sundance Selects/IFC Films, the film distribution unit of AMC Networks, Inc. The deal allows OTF to distribute the TV and other select rights of 140 titles from Sundance Selects/IFC Films’ catalog to territories globally, excluding the US.
Chris Carter, the creator of The X-Files is coming back to television with a police mystery thriller titled Unique sporting a female character as the lead. Unique will have a supernatural focus and Carter will write and serve as executive producer. Media Rights Capital will produce.
ABC picked up a drama titled Turner Loose from ABC Studios about character Bobby Turner, a disgraced Wall Street banker in prison who becomes a lawyer for his fellow inmates. He eventually finds a way out for himself and a chance for redemption working for the female prosecutor who sent him to prison.
NBC okayed a project from Universal Cable Productions from the co-creators of Numb3rs, Nicolas Falacci and Cheryl Heuton based on the short story When the Women Come Out to Dance by Elmore Leonard, per THR. FX’s current drama Justified is also based on a short story from the same anthology by Leonard. NBC’s project is about a Colombian mail-order bride who arrives in Miami and struggles to move on from her past.
Going back and forth between TV and film projects, Seth Gordon just signed a two-year overall deal with Sony Pictures Television (SPT). Gordon currently is working with SPT as the co-creator and EP of Breaking In, the FOX comedy that is being brought back after it was canceled last May. Gordon also is an EP on the new SPT comedy in development at FOX with Adam F. Goldberg, who also is a co-creator of Breaking In. Gordon’s new deal will have him develop new projects for SPT.
The CW’s Nikita promoted Dillon Casey who plays Agent Sean Pierce, from a recurring cast member to a series regular. Casey’s character was introduced in the season two premiere episode.
A new reality show is set to feature the grandchildren of former South African President Nelson Mandela. The proposed program will center on Mandela’s granddaughters Dorothy Adjoa Amuah, Zaziwe Dlamini-Manaway and her younger sister Swati Dlamini. All three were raised in the US and have now returned to South Africa to be near family and their business affairs. The women’s parents and grandparents will not be part of the show that is scheduled to premiere in early 2012.

Wednesday A18-49 Analysis: FOX held its ground winning Wednesday with a 4.1/11 A18-49, according to final national ratings from Nielsen. At 8p, FOX’s The X Factor did best at 3.7/11 followed by CBS’ Survivor: South Pacific at 3.2/9 and ABC came in third with the average of The Middle and the series premiere of Suburgatory at 3.0/9 (The Middle delivered a 2.7/8 at 8p while Suburgatory bumped to a 3.3/9 at 830p). During the 9p hour, a tie for #1 happened between the average of ABC’s comedies Modern Family and the season debut of Happy Endings and FOX’s The X Factor at 4.4/11 each and CBS’ Criminal Minds was #2 at 3.6/9. CBS ended up in first place at 10p with CSI at 3.1/8 and ABC’s Revenge was next at 2.7/7.
