Cynopsis: Sports
09/02/11
Good morning. It’s Friday, September 2, 2011, and this is your first early morning Sports briefing.
Fans watching the PGA Tour on NBC and CBS won’t have to change their Tivos anytime soon, with Commissioner Tim Finchem announcing a nine-year extension with both networks to continue coverage of the sport through the 2021 season. The deal coincides with the remaining years of the PGA Tour’s exclusive 15-year cable television agreement with Golf Channel that began in 2007. As part of the agreement, CBS will continue its current broadcast television package, which showcases an average of 20 tournaments annually, while NBC will continue to televise an average of 10 events per year.
The new agreements also will broaden exposure on digital platforms and include simulcast coverage of live tournament action on various PGA Tour digital platforms including PGATour.com, CBSports.com, NBCSports.com and GolfChannel.com; additional digital carriage of a number of tournaments with coverage from marquee holes, competition highlights and regular news updates from tournament sites; as well as live complementary tournament coverage on Golf Channel, which will air along with NBC’s coverage.
FOX Sports continued adding to its college roster, signing The Insider’s Kevin Frazier and former Super Bowl MVP Marcus Allen to FOX College Football’s studio team where the duo will handle pregame, halftime and postgame coverage. The pair will be anchoring more than 60 college football games this season, featuring games from the Pac-12, Big 12 and Conference USA airing nationally on FX and FOX Sports Networks and will debut on Saturday, Sept. 3 at noon ahead of FSN’s coverage of the University of Miami (Ohio) at Missouri.
Over at MLB Network, Sam Ryan has officially joined the crew where she will serve as a studio host and reporter for the channel. Ryan is slated to make her debut on Sept. 6 and most recently served as sports anchor and reporter for WCBS-TV in New York, NY and as a contributor to CBS Sports’ coverage of The NFL on CBS and the NCAA Men’s Basketball Championship.
Panasonic has confirmed that next year’s London Olympics will be known in the record books as the first live 3D Games for the event with more than 200 hours of 3D coverage during the Games. The Opening and Closing Ceremonies will get the treatment as well sports ranging from gymnastics to diving.
YES Network is set to premiere a one-hour tribute to the 10th anniversary of 9/11 with the special 9/11 Remembered. The show will look at how New York sports, and the New York Yankees in particular, played a role in bringing the New York community together in the face of the tragedy.
Multiple reports state that Frank McCourt has been offered $1.2 billion to sell the Los Angeles Dodgers. The bid is spearheaded by Los Angeles Marathon founder Bill Burke with Chinese investors helping to fund the bid. That dollar figure would be good enough to set a MLB record for a team.
Asian sports provider One World Sports has nabbed an exclusive agreement for the North American rights to soccer matches from the third round of qualification for the 2014 FIFA World Cup from World Sport Group (WSG). The first series of games will be broadcast through OWS on Sept. 2 featuring China versus Singapore, Australia versus Thailand and Tajikistan versus Uzbekistan. Four days later, on Sept. 6, OWS will broadcast series two games including Uzbekistan versus Japan and Indonesia versus Bahrain.
SPEED is adding reporter Marianela Pereyra to the mix, where she will join the NASCAR Trackside broadcast team for the next four weeks. Her credits include NBC’s Poker After Dark, ESPNU’s college football series Road Trip and VH1’s Dance Cam Slam. In addition, SPEED is shifting its post-race show NASCAR Victory Lane to immediately after post-race coverage ends for the broadcast partner. The show no longer will air Sundays at 8p.
HRTV is adding a new Sunday weekend wrap-up show to the channel’s weekly “Fasig-Tipton Pursuit of the Cup, Presented by Twinspires.com” series. The Sunday wrap will begin Sept. 4 at 8p with Scott Hazelton hosting and Gary Stevens providing analysis.
SureWest Communications is signed on with NFL Network to provide NFL RedZone for its subscribers in Sacramento, California and Kansas City, Kansas and Missouri areas. Coverage begins Sept. 8, ahead of the first weekend in the schedule.
FOX Sports Ohio has inked Xavier University to a three-year television rights agreement. The deal will allow FOX Sports Ohio to produce and televise a minimum of eight men’s basketball games each season.
The NFL is scheduling special tributes in stadium, on the field and on television in remembrance of 9/11. First the first Sunday of the NFL regular season falling on the 10thanniversary of the tragedy, the games and broadcasts on that day featuring pregame salutes during the Sunday afternoon CBS and FOX telecasts, as well as a special Sunday night presentation from MetLife Stadium in East Rutherford, NJ on NBC. All games in each of the broadcast windows will feature a special video introduction followed by performances of “Taps” from near the sites of the attacks, and moments of silence. In addition, players, coaches and sideline personnel will wear a special NFL 9/11 ribbon as a patch or pin on their uniforms and sideline apparel and all stadiums hosting games will feature the ribbon logo on the field.
NBC Sports is again set to feature Faith Hill performing the opening theme for NBC Sunday Night Football. The song, Waiting All Day for Sunday Night, debuts this season on Sunday, Sept. 11.
Tennis Channel is set to ring the NASDAQ Opening Bell remotely from the US Open at Arthur Ashe Stadium in Flushing Meadows this morning with the network’s Chairman and CEO Ken Solomon and on-air talent set to ring the bell.
The ACC and Raycom Sports are expanding of the ACC Vault, allowing online users to watch full-length ACC regular season and Championship Football games from all 12 ACC members, as well as original video content and social sharing features. The ACC Vault, which is integrated into the conference’s official website, serves as the primary means for the ACC Network to showcase the history of ACC Football and Men’s Basketball.
StarStreet has announced the launch of the first-ever real money NFL stock market allowing fans to buy and sell shares of their favorite NFL players. The site is designed to put a new spin into fantasy statistics, with investors owning virtual shares of players and make money based on the player’s performance during the season. Players are valued based on their statistical performance with values rising and falling in conjunction with their on-field performance. At the end of the season, every dollar that has been invested in the market by the traders is then paid out to the shareholders.
The Main Event
Two potential BCS champions go at it early in the season as Oregon and LSU square off at 8p on ABC.
