Good morning. It’s Friday, September 29, 2006 and this is your first early morning Kids! briefing. 

AT&T Inc. has inked a distribution agreement with Anime Network, which will deliver its on-demand programming as part of the AT&T U-verse TV channel lineup.  Under the agreement, AT&T U-verse TV customers will have access to Anime Network On Demand, and will offer free, subscription and transactional video-on-demand (VOD) options.  Financial terms of the deal were not disclosed.
 
Corus Entertainment Inc. has teamed with Quebec-based Frima Studio Inc. to develop a network of massive multiplayer online games (MMOGs) specifically for K8-12.  Code-named Constellation, the MMOGs are designed to introduce players to a virtual community where they can explore, play mini-games, chat and customize characters in a safe online environment.  Constellation is slated to launch later this year.

Spanish producer BRB Internacional:

  • BRB and Red Kite, the UK movie producer, will launch The Imp (65 x 90 second), a 3D black and white animated short-form series at Mipcom Jr.  Hell-bent on creating and spreading evil where he can, The Imp, who lives with his brother Bob, just isn’t that good at it.  Created by Andy Fielding The Imp is produced by Red Kite and Screen 21, the latter a creative unit of BRB.  Distributed worldwide by BRB, the first season is set to be available in 2007 and has been acquired by Cartoon Network UK and Disney Channel Japan.  FYI, The Imp has been selected as on of the six finalists in the Mipcom Jr. Licensing Challenge; winners will be announced in Cannes on October 8.
  • BRB will also introduce Angus & Cheryl (104 x 90 second), an HD 3D animated skit-like format.  Targeted to teens, Angus & Cheryl uses only visuals to take a humorous look at the ongoing battle between gals and guys through its stars Angus and Cheryl, who happen to be total opposites and totally interdependent upon one another.  Slated to be available by late 2007, Angus & Cheryl is produced by Screen 21 in collaboration with Tuba Entertainment.

AG Properties (AGP), the intellectual property/licensing unit of American Greetings, makes its first appearance at Mipcom with a slate of multiplatform properties including the new animated properties Maryoku Yummy and Sushi Pack, as well as Twisted Whiskers, and new updated CGI animated versions of the Care Bears and Holly Hobbie & Friends.

  • Maryoku Yummy (26 x 22′) currently in production this preschool series follows Maryoku, a creature who lives in a world where kid’s wishes are processed so they can come true.  The property is being developed for TV with Barbara Herndon and Jill Gorey.
  • Sushi Pack is a comedy about five crime fighting adolescent pieces of sushi that came to life through a series of unique events.  Targeted to K5-8 the treatment for the series is being written by Tom Ruegger and Nicholas Hollander, the writers/producers behind Animaniacs, Tiny Toon Adventures and Pinky and the Brain.
  • Twisted Whiskers began life as a greeting card line, which AGP is now developing into a series of CGI animated shorts with animator Bill Kopp.  As of now 30 x 1′ shorts are available.
  • Care Bears  a group of specials is currently in development and will be produced by SD Entertainment.  One of the new characters, Oopsy Bear, will be featured in Oopsy Does It, a special slated for a fall 2007 theatrical and home video release in the US from Fox Home Entertainment, the exclusive US distributor of new Care Bears content. Three additional releases are planned for 2007 and 2008.
  • Holly Hobbie & Friends the new entertainment series follows Holly and her friends who all spend the summers together doing the things that 10-yr-old girls enjoy.  Billed as the great-granddaughter of the first Holly, the new Holly dons boots and is a little more funky.  The new animated special, Holly Hobbie & Friends: Christmas Wishes will bow in the US, airing on Nick Jr. this holiday 2006. Three additional specials are available and four more titles are currently in production.

MARKETING/LICENSING

Advanced Micro Devices, Kohl’s Department Stores and Sara Lee Food & Beverage have all signed on as sponsors for The Flushed Away Underground Adventure, the new online game set to launch exclusively on AOL.com on October 5.  Based on the upcoming DreamWorks Animation/Aardman Features movie Flushed Away, the game is being produced by Mark Burnett Productions.  Each sponsor will receive customized online promotion including pre-roll videos and ad banners.  Additionally, during the initial weeks the 3D game is available the sponsors will also receive advertising exclusivity on KOL, AOL’s website for kids.  Flushed Away opens nationwide November 4, 2006.  See here for more info: http://movies.aol.com/flushed-away-game

India’s Disney Channel will launch its first, of a group of five, original Hindi-language productions, a live-action series titled Vicky Aur Vetaal (26 episodes), on October 8.  Based on an ancient Indian folktale and set in modern times, the Cinevista-produced show follows a 300-year old ghost and his rescuer.  The Sunday morning comedy series’ launch will be supported by a campaign which includes TV, radio, internet and outdoor marketing, as well as in-store marketing efforts.

The virtual pet owner who thought they had, um, virtually everything, Bandai America Inc. has created the Golden Tamagotchi, a special limited edition toy.  There are only 2,000 Golden Tamagotchi, which are individually, set to be available here in the US, and they won’t be sold in stores.  So, for those who want to get one they’ll have to log onto Tamagotchi.com October 2-31, aka Golden Month, where each day there will be different trivia question.  After correctly answering the question of the day, fans will qualify for a daily random drawing.  By the end of the month a total of 300 Golden Tamagotchis will have been given out.  The remainder of the limited edition virtual pets will be given out via contests through the end of the year on Radio Disney.
