Cynopsis: Kids!

9/28/07

Good morning. It’s Friday, September 28, 2007, and this is your first early morning briefing.

Preschoolers in Europe get another new TV channel, as Chellomedia, the European content unit of Liberty Global Inc., and HIT Entertainment partner in a joint venture to launch the JimJam channel internationally.  Chellomedia recently acquired JimJam, the preschool channel that bowed on Italy’s sky Italia last year, from its founder David Bouchier.  HIT and Chellomedia’s subsidiary, Zonemedia will launch and distribute JimJam first on cable and satellite services in Europe later this year, and rolling out from 1Q 2008 in Africa and the Middle East.  Future plans include debuting JimJam around the world, excluding the US and the UK.  JimJam’s programming line-up will include HIT shows such as Thomas & Friends, Bob the Builder, Fireman Sam, and Pingu among others.  Additionally, the channel will acquire programming from around the world.

Other new kid-targeted channels we have told you about over the last six weeks include:

  • In Canada Astral Media’s Family Channel is set to launch the preschool channel Playhouse Disney Canada channel on November 30, 2007.  The channel bows Initially on ExpressVu Digital TV from Bell, with other Canadian distribution deals to be announced.
  • Earlier this month the KidsCo channel, a multi-platform joint venture of Sparrowhawk Media, DIC Entertainment and Nelvana Enterprises, debuted across Romania, Hungary, Russia, Turkey and Poland.  KidsCo is expected to be available from October in Ukraine, and in early 2008 in Asia Pacific, with plans to be in 40+ territories across Europe and Latin America in the next 18 months.
  • Russian State TV and Radio Company (VGTRK) launched the Bibigon at the end of August, available via NTV+ satellite TV.

The Walt Disney Internet group (WDIG) will shut off its Disney-branded mobile virtual network phone service at the end of this year.  WDIG says that it is exploring a new business model that might include offering its Family Center product through a deal with a US carrier.  The Family Center features the ability to see where a kid’s mobile phone is located on a map, a feature WDIG reports is popular with parents.  This time last year WDIG announced the shuttering of its ESPN MVNO service.

NEW PRODUCTION & DEVELOPMENT

Warner Bros. Pictures, The Weinstein Company and Imagi Animation have worked out the “principal terms” of a deal for the worldwide distribution of the animated movie versions of Gatchaman and AstroBoy, in early and late 2009 respectively.  The three companies worked together earlier this year on Imagi’s feature film, TMNT, which was also distributed by Warner Bros. and TWC.

Actress Cate Blanchett will be in good company in the voice cast for the stop-motion animated adaptation of Roald Dahl’s book, Fantastic Mr. Fox.  Joining the cast is George Clooney, who will play Mr. Fox to Blanchett’s Mrs. Fox, per Writer/Director/Producer Wes Anderson in an interview with MTV.com.  Anderson also revealed that Bill Murray and Jason Schwartzman will lend their voices to the project.  Slated for release in November 2009, Fantastic Mr. Fox will be produced by Blue Sky Studios, the CGi animation studio, and distributed by 20th Century Fox Animation.  Blue Sky is a division of Fox Filmed Entertainment.

MORE KIDS STUFF

VGI Entertainment has been appointed the exclusive international TV distributor the HD motion capture, action series Adventures of Orsum Island (26×30 min).  VGI will launch the series at MIPCOM Junior 2007.  Targeted to Kids/Tweens K7-12, Adventures of Orsum Island is produced by Pineapple Squared.  The first episode of the series is slated for delivery next month.

Nelvana is set to produce second seasons (26 new episodes) of the K6-10 targeted animated series, Grossology and Di-Gata Defenders.  Grossology is produced by Nelvana Studios, while Nelvana Studios and LuxAnimation produce Di-Gata Defenders.  The merchandise program for Grossology is set to launch in 2008.  Spin Master Ltd. developed a line of dice games, which replicates the battles from Di-Gata Defenders, and merchandise that will launch in various markets throughout 2007 and 2008. Game Factory will launch a Nintendo DS Di-Gata Defenders game title this October in Canada and Europe.

Zodiak Television World will present ten new formats to buyers at MIPCOM 2007 including Teen Starz.  The concept is this is sort of like the tribute band Abba Teens (aka A Teens), do you remember them from about 10 years ago?  The teen group was almost a carbon copy of the famed group ABBA, and had success around the world with an album of all ABBA songs (and other albums).  So, that is basically the idea of Teen Starz, ten musical artists will seek out a younger version of themselves and then help shape them, training them in singing, dancing, style and the like.  In the end of the season, the young version of each group will perform and the public will vote on which is the best.

MARKETING/LICENSING

Entertainment Rights has tapped Character Options Ltd. as the master toy licensee for Postman Pat.  Under the terms of the deal, which includes toys, playsets, plush and collectibles, Character Options will develop new product lines for the property, which will rollout in stores from early 2009 to coincide with the debut of the new Postman Pat season on CBeebies and BBC TWO.
