Netflix wants to add its streaming service to U.S. cable systems, said CFO David Wells at an investment conference Wednesday. “We would love… to be available via the existing device in the home, which is the set-top box,” said Wells. Netflix has already struck a deal with U.K.’s Virgin Media, and Sweden’s Com Hem.
The latest player to set up shop on the corner of Twitter and TV is the NFL. The football league will present tweeters with news, analysis and real-time highlights from Thursday night games on the NFL Network, as well as clips from games on other nets after they’ve aired. As part of Twitter’s Amplify program, the partners have pre-sold ad inventory; the deal comes ahead of Twitter’s public stock offering.
A new study, Nielsen Global Survey of Trust in Advertising, reports that of 29,000 people polled, 68 percent say they take action at least some of the time based on TV advertising. Recommendations from people they know was most likely to influence respondents (84 percent); consumer opinions posted online was second (70 percent).
60 Minutes makes its 46th season debut on Sunday with an interview with Secretary of State John Kerry. The news show also unveiled a redesigned app, which includes more classic segments, a “browse by decade” section and bookmarking feature. Season premiere is 7p on CBS.
Fox and Comcast are testing a technology that would keep ads in VOD content current – and grab revenue for viewing not currently measured by Nielsen, reports Variety. “Dynamic ad insertion,” a concept also being explored by CBS and NBC, means ads could be updated to ensure relevancy, so nets would be paid for viewing beyond the current three-day limit.
Hyundai continues its robust marketing partnership with AMC‘s Walking Dead by sponsoring three new webisodes of the zombie drama. The car company’s kiwi-green Tucson is prominently featured on the TV show.
Where better? Oprah Winfrey‘s OWN net signed a deal for the broadcast bow of Lee Daniels’ The Butler, the hit Weinstein Company film starring Winfrey as the wife of a White House butler. Movie will air in 2017.
Dumped after just one day on the air, conservative Fox Sports Southwest commentator Craig James has now lawyered up, claiming his firing was a “severe violation” of his religious liberty. Fox said James’ anti-gay marriage stance wasn’t the reason he was terminated – he just “was not a good fit.”
There’s a YouTube channel with thousands of Saturday Night Live clips – but try to access it from the U.S. and you’ll get a “Sorry about that” smiley face instead of Tina Fey (http://www.youtube.com/SaturdayNightLive). The channel was created to boost viewership of the NBC series overseas; in the States, SNL clips are licensed to Yahoo.
Gabrielle Carteris (Beverly Hills, 90210) was elected SAG-AFTRA’s EVP on Thursday. Union president Ken Howard had backed Carteris’s opponent, Mike Hodge.
A&E docuseries The Governor’s Wife follows Trina, the 35-year-old spouse of 86-year-old former Louisiana governor Edwin Edwards (they were pen pals while he was in prison), as she attempts to win over skeptics and fit into Southern high society. Series from Leftfield Pictures and SSS Entertainment premieres Sunday, October 27 at 10p.
Discovery Channel takes a look at the dark side of controversial daredevil Evel Knievel in True Evel, from Kowalski TV. One-hour special airs Monday, October 14 at 10p.
Military Channel‘s What If…? Armageddon 1962 suggests what might have happened if an earlier attempt on President John F. Kennedy’s life had been successful, putting Lyndon B. Johnson in charge of the Cuban Missile Crisis. The Peacock Productions special airs Tuesday, October 22 at 10p.
EPIX kicks off its “All Hallows’ Evil” Halloween marathon October 30-31 with an original documentary about ghoulish special effects. Nightmare Factory (to be followed by such fare as Pumpkinhead and Cheerleader Massacre) airs Wednesday, October 30 at 8p.
Joey Lawrence will host the third annual American Humane Association Hero Dog Awards, joining a pack of canine-loving celebs including Betty White, Ryan O’Neal and Marlee Matlin. The Hallmark special from MRB Productions tapes at the Beverly Hilton October 5, to air Wednesday, October 30.
They’re ba-a-a-ck. Jersey Shore’s Snooki and her BFF launch the third season of Snooki & JWoww on Tuesday, October 22 at 10p.
Tricked-out bunkers and survival machines return in season three of NatGeo’s Doomsday Preppers on Tuesday, October 29 at 9p. Aptly enough, the net’s new series, How to Survive the End of the World, follows at 10p.
More Mistresses: ABC is bringing back the froth for a sophomore summer run. The soapy drama from ABC Studios, starring Alyssa Milano, was the number two summer scripted series A18-49, after CBS powerhouse Under the Dome.
It hasn’t even left yet, but HBO‘s Boardwalk Empire is back. The drama, which is three eps into season four, has been renewed for season five.
Velocity’s Overhaulin’ has a new driver. Ultimate Fighting Championship’s Octagon Girl, Arianny Celeste, joins Chip Foose and Chris Jacobs on the auto makeover show, premiering season seven Tuesday, October 1 at 9p.

NBC‘s Revolution drew a 1.8/6 A18-49 and 6.8 million total viewers in its new time slot, about what it delivered in the demo with its The Voice lead-in during May sweeps (though down from the 4.1 ratings splash it made a year ago). But the net’s Law & Order: SVU isn’t showing signs of age, bouncing 29 percent from a year ago with a 2.7/8 in A18-49..
Wednesday A18-49 Analysis: ABC led Wednesday night among A18-49 viewers with 2.9/8, according to final primetime national ratings from Nielsen. ABC’s Modern Family coasted to the top spot at 9p, with 4.2/12 versus 2.8/8 for CBS’s Criminal Minds. A 2.9/8 for NBC’s Law & Order: SVU at 10p topped the 2.0/6 earned by both ABC’s Nashville and CBS’s CSI.
