Lifetime Television announced a fifth season renewal for its scripted series Army Wives and a third season reupping of Drop Dead Diva. Both series will be back next year with 13 total episodes each. Army Wives is produced by ABC Studios and Drop Dead Diva is from Sony Pictures Television.
Turner Classic Movies (TCM) is readying its original documentary series Moguls & Movie Stars: A History of Hollywood to premiere on November 1 at 8p. The seven-part docu-series will explore the history of the American movie industry each week beginning with the debut episode, “Peepshow Pioneers” chronicling work by Thomas Edison, D.W. Griffith and Georges Melies. Each episode of Moguls & Movie Stars will be followed by films from or about the eras discussed that week. TCM will air encores of Moguls & Movie Stars on Wednesdays at 10p that include a short panel discussion with TCM host Robert Osborne and other film commentators and historians featured in the docu-series. Moguls & Movies Stars is narrated by Christopher Plummer and is produced by TCM in association with Ostar Productions and Turner Entertainment Co.
After just 3 weeks on the air, The CW has put in an order for six more scripts for the Wednesday night 9p series Hellcats. So far this season, Hellcats has averaged an 0.9/3 A18-49, following the first 3 episodes of America’s Next Top Model averaging a 1.3/4 among A18-49.
Wedding Central, the 24/7 network highlighting wedding-themed content introduces new branded programming strands for different nights targeting a different aspect of weddings, relationships and dating. The nightly programming blocks air from 8-10p and include by night:
- Mondays: Bride on a Budget Monday – Features such series as Rich Bride Poor Bride and other programming pertaining to wedding budgets and brides saving money for their weddings.
- Tuesdays: Platinum Tuesday – Includes shows about over-the-top extravagant weddings with series and specials such as Super Secret Celebrity Wedding and Bling on the Bride.
- Wednesdays: For Better or Worse Wednesdays – Relation-themed programming will be the focus including the interior design intervention show, She’s Moving In.
- Thursdays: Wedding Central Presents – A collection of the network’s top wedding shows like Wedding Gown Secrets Revealed, Katrina Weddings and Funniest Wedding Outtakes.
- Fridays: Mr. Right Night – This night’s theme is all about finding the perfect guy including dating and reality series such as Girl Meets Cowboy and Momma’s Boys.
- Saturdays: Royal Wedding Saturdays – Previously announced showcase of royal specials and series including Kate: The New Diana and Royal Honeymoon Getaways.
- Sundays: Movie of the Month – Each Sunday night Wedding Central will present a wedding, relationship or dating-themed film including titles like Fools Rush In and Bridget Jones’s Diary.
NBC Sports’ Sunday Night Football game this weekend between the New York Jets and Miami Dolphins will be broadcast on the NFL, Telemundo and NBC networks in both English and Spanish. This Sunday marks Telemundo’s first regular season game airing of Sunday Night Football to its stations in New York, Los Angeles, Chicago, Dallas and Miami. Furthermore, NBC Sports’ Sunday Night Football production crew will team with Deportes Telemundo to broadcast the game from Miami in two languages with Deportes Telemundo providing its own Spanish-speaking commentators, Jessi Losada, Rene Giraldo and Edgar Lopez.
On Monday at 5p, MTV kicks off The Seven, a daily, 30m live studio show that will count down the seven top pop culture stories of the day. The show will include live interviews and performances hosted by former Chicago radio personality Kevin Manno and former Mets Weekly host Julie Alexandria. Production for The Seven will take place live in front of a studio audience located in New York’s Times Square. For its first show, The Seven will feature hi-hop artist Drake and the cast of the film The Social Network including Jesse Eisenberg, Andrew Garfield and Justin Timberlake.
When Bravo debuts Top Chef All-Stars on December 1 at 10p, the show’s eighth season will add a new celebrity judge as author/chef Anthony Bourdain joins host Padma Lakshmi and head judge Tom Colicchio and judge Gail Simmons. Top Chef All-Stars is produced by Magical Elves.
Canada’s TELETOON at Night will premiere the animated comedy series The Dating Guy beginning October 17 at 1030p. The series will air as part of TELETOON at Night, the after 9p programming block targeting young adults. The 26-episode half-hour series will feature a cadre of Canadian voice actors along with guest appearances by Canadian comics Russell Peters and Howie Mandel. The series is from marblemedia and eOne Entertainment for TELETOON Canada Inc.

Tricon Films & Television picked up the scripted comedy series The Smart Woman Survival Guide and the comedy docu-series ‘Hick’ Town. The Smart Woman Survival Guide, with 30 half-hour episodes from Magee TV, follows a group of women who become friends over work, life and love. The series originally aired on the W Network. ‘Hick’ Town with six half-hour episodes, produced by Donald Zuckerman is about the mayor of Denver, CO and the running of this fast-growing city.
NBC picked up J.J. Abrams’ next project from his Warner Bros. TV-based Bad Robot company giving a pilot commitment to a new untitled series starring former Lost actors Michael Emerson and Terry O’Quinn. Plot details about the series have not been revealed. Josh Appelbaum and Andre Nemec will write and be counted as executive producers along with Abrams and Bryan Burk.
In other development news, per Variety:
- FOX gave a put pilot commitment to a drama about CIA agents who are sent in to fix operations that have gone awry. 20th Century Fox TV and Alex Kurtzman and Roberto Orci’s K/O Paper Products company will produce. David Guggenheim will write the script and serve as co-executive producer.
- ABC has a series on the docket called Anti-Mafia Squad from Gina Matthews and Grant Scharbo as executive producers. Raul Mateu of Fluent Media will also serve as an executive producer.
- Also for ABC, Coquette, the production banner helmed by Courteney Cox and her husband David Arquette is setting up a procedural drama titled 911 Operators about stories of 911 operators who have to make life-or-death split decisions on a daily basis. Michael Caleo is penning the script and will executive produce along with Cox and Arquette. ABC Studios will produce 911 Operators where Coquette has a first-look deal.
Starz is developing a limited television series set in the world of 1950s-60s auto racing, cites Variety. Filmmakers Wolfgang Petersen and Ron Shelton will develop King of Speed centered on the international auto racing circuit led by Enzo Ferrari as well as the underground car culture of Southern California. The series may have 10 episodes that are written by Shelton who would also manage some of the episodes. Petersen may also direct the project.
Casting Call: A new pilot presentation about real people helping real people is casting for a host who is warm, nurturing and passionate about using their own life experience to help others. The show is not seeking a person with a psychology, MFCC or other degree. The show would consider people who are a life coach, an author who has written a self-help book, a blogger or someone who has started a support group. Wednesday A18-49 Analysis: CBS had a turn in the winner’s seat Wednesday night at 3.6/10 among A18-49, according to final national ratings from Nielsen. CBS won the 8p hour with Survivor: Nicaragua at 4.0/12 while ABC’s comedy premieres of The Middle and the new Better With You averaged a 2.6/8 which tied for second place with the season opener of Hell’s Kitchen on FOX also posting a 2.6/8 (ABC’s Better With You delivered a stand-alone 2.5/7 at 830p). Also this hour, NBC debuted its new spy series Undercovers which tied for third place with UNIV’s Hasta que el Dinero Nos Separe at 2.1/6 each. ABC wrested control during 9p as its sitcoms Modern Family and Cougar Town did best with an average of 4.2/11 followed by CBS’ season premiere of Criminal Minds at 4.0/11, in third a second new episode of Hell’s Kitchen on FOX at 3.1/8 and in fourth the new season start of NBC’s Law & Order: SVU at 2.9/8. NBC shot up to #1 at 10p with the second half of its Law & Order: SVU premiere at 3.5/10 with CBS’ new series The Defenders next at 2.9/8 and the series premiere of ABC’s The Whole Truth in third at 1.5/4.

London-based CAKE added three executives to its roster as part of a recent reorganization of its senior management team:
- Jonathan Dyer becomes Head/Business Affairs in charge of the management of CAKE’s intellectual property rights and oversees the contracts involved with acquisitions for the company’s growing program catalog and the licensing of TV, home entertainment and new media rights for the company’s worldwide partners.
- Emilie Frelon joins as Head/Finance to manage the company’s further expansion and to assist the structure and the financing of upcoming shows currently in the company’s distribution lineup.
- David Furness as Marketing Manager will supervise all facets of CAKE’s marketing and communications efforts involving print and design to advertising, budgets and corporate messaging.
Current TV expanded its affiliate sales team by hiring Kristen Dean Hilbert and Diana Stengel who will both have the title of VP/Distribution. Kristen and Diana will have responsibility over increasing and managing the affiliate sales team in addition to developing cross-platform sales strategies.
Former ABC Studios VP/Production Jason Fisher was appointed SVP/Production with AMC beginning this month. Jason will supervise physical production for AMC’s original programs, overseeing each stage from development to delivery. He will particularly be responsible for AMC’s newest original series The Walking Dead and the future drama series The Killing (wt). Based in New York, Jason will report to Joel Stillerman, SVP/Original Programming, Production and Digital Content, AMC.
