Good morning. It’s Friday, September 24, 2004, and this is your first early morning briefing.
While each of the Big 3 networks bit off a time period winning piece of Wednesday night, it was CBS who ultimately came out on top with a 5.4/14, while ABC and NBC tied at 4.7/13, according to Nielsen Media Research.
ABC won the 8pm hour with a whomping 6.5/19 for the premiere of Lost, well ahead of Dr. Phil’s first hour on CBS (3.8/11) and an original episode of Hawaii on NBC (2.2/7). Elsewhere, WB’s Smallville also debuted at 8pm with a 2.7/8 A18-49, ranking #3 for the hour ahead of NBC, and pulling a 3.0/11 among M18-34. UPN’s Top Model premiered with a 1.8/5 A18-49, with a stronger 3.6/11 among W18-34.
At 9pm NBC’s debut of this season’s Law & Order led with a 6.2/16 A18-49, again ahead of CBS’ second hour of Dr. Phil (5.5/14), and the first hour of ABC’s 2-hour premiere of The Bachelor (3.9/10). CBS’ two hour average for Dr. Phil was a 4.6/13, climbing to a 6.5/16 W18-49. The Bachelor’s 2-hour 9-11p premiere for ABC drew a 3.8/10, with a 5.2/12 W18-49. WB’s The Mountain debuted at 9p with a 1.8/5 A18-49, adn averaged a 6 share across the key female demos. Veronica Mars on UPN delivered a 1.1/3 A18-49 and found its strongest audience among the younger Teens (1.5/5) and W18-34 (1.9/5).
At 10p CBS’ CSI: New York whomped the competition with a 6.9/18 A18-49, ahead of Law & Order’s 10p hour (5.6/14). CSI also climbed among women viewers to a 8.5/20 among W18-49.
Tonight’s Premieres: ABC: 8 Simple Rules [p], Complete Savages [p], Hope Faith [p], Less than Perfect [p] CBS: Joan of Arcadia [p], Jag [p], Dr. Vegas [p]
Sunday’s Premieres: ABC: Extreme Makeover at 8pm, Wife Swap at 10p CBS: Clubhouse at 8pm NBC: American Dreams at 8pm, Law & Order: CI at 9p
Casting / Development / Production:
The team of Rob Burnett/Jon Beckerman (“Ed”) and NBC Universal Television/Worldwide Pants are developing a sitcom pilot and have cast Chazz Palminteri in the starring role – a father returns to rekindle or in fact create a relationship with his son, whom he left shortly after his birth.
Elsewhere at NBC Universal Television, conversations abound with Vanessa Williams for a development deal that could potentially lead to a syndicated talk show, or something else. Rumors about on that front as well, but we’ll have to wait and listen.
NBC has given a script commitment with penalty to Shawn Ryan (The Shield) for his new political drama project produced by 20th. The project is about a young Congressman from Connecticut. keen on all the things – good and bad – political office can get him.
Shawn Ryan has also received a script commitment from CBS for another drama project – this one set in the world of the armed forces, being produced together with David Mamet.
This can be a good thing or a bad thing – but change at the top is always difficult. Woody Frasier, Exec Prod of CNBC’s evening chat program McEnroe, has left the building – a decision both parties agreed to. Stepping up as Interim EP will be supervising producer Andrew Meyer. According to Hollywood Reporter, CNBC is still committed to McEnroe’s show.
A program change from CBS: the network has scheduled a rebroadcast of CSI to air on Wednesday, 9/29 at 9pm. That will push back the season debut of King of Queens and series Premiere of Center of the Universe back to October 6, 9-10p.
A program change for NBC: Realty show Loser (NBC Universal TV/Reveille/3 Ball Prods) is about a group of people looking to lose a certain amount of weight over a certain period of time. You’ll recall hearing about this several weeks ago. In any case, the show’s 8 episodes have now been scheduled to kick off on Tuesday nights, beginning October 19 at 8pm, filling the time period that will have been recently vacated following the conclusion of Last Comic Standing. This scheduling move puts into question when will The Contender begin – since it was scheduled to be in this time period beginning in November. Of course, that doesn’t mean the network can’t move things around a little.

Maybe it’s just me, and maybe it’s because I’m not a die hard Honeymooners fan (I know, it’s anti-American of me), but doesn’t it seem that every couple of years, just before a station airs a marathon or a new cable nets gets the rights, someone has once again found the Lost Episodes? If you are a die hard fan, you’ll be happy to know, a new lost episode have been found yet again – this time at the University of Georgia in the Peabody Archive. Titled The Love Letter, originally airing on October 16, 1954, the episode is about a letter Ralph finds and believes was intended for his wife. The kinescope for this episode was purportedly never seen again (until now), and in fact the cast recreated the sketch during the1956-57 season. The kinny for the original airing was discovered at the University during a review of the University’s preservation efforts and inventory. It will be turned over to Gleason Enterprises for preservation and will then be made available on home video.
What do you think? So many celebrities are positioning themselves as potential great syndicated talk show hosts, and the question is – who would you like to see as a talk show host? Sounds like an easy question, but I suspect tougher than I think. Wanting to see someone as a talk show host and believing they may actually be good at it, is a tough combination (remember Whoopi?). Check back here Monday for your top choices.

The History Channelpresents This Day in History: 1927: Toronto, Ontario’s Irish heritage suffers a symbolic setback when the city’s hockey team, the Toronto St. Patricks, is purchased and renamed the Maple Leafs. The new name has sparked countless grammatical arguments over whether the team’s jerseys should read “Toronto Maple Leaves.”
Answer to Yesterday’s Trivia Question:In the early 1980’s, the famous line from Saturday Night Live, “Live from New York, it’s Saturday night!” was changed by producer Jean Doumanian, who was with the show for just one season. During Jean’s brief tenure, what was this line changed to? “LIVE FROM STUDIO 8H, IT’S SATURDAY NIGHT.” The following year, under the guidance of Dick Ebersol, an announcer opened the show with “From New York, the most dangerous city in the world, it’s Saturday Night Live.” Sadly, no kudos today.
Today’s Trivia Question: On Monty Python’s Flying Circus, what was the name of the clever sheep who attempted to fly? Remember, “they don’t fly so much, as they plummet.” (click to respond to the trivia question and please be sure to include with your answer your name, company, city and time zone. Only the second four correct responses from each time zone will be listed in tomorrow’s kudo list.)
