Cynopsis: Sports
09/23/11
Good morning. It’s Friday, September 23, 2011, and this is your first early morning Sports briefing.
FOX International Channels, with over 1 billion subscribers via 300+ channels around the world, is working with FOX Sports Media Group to create a new sports division called FIC Sports. The division will manage the syndication of FOX Sports content worldwide and is designed to centralize the company’s international sports under one umbrella in an effort to drive revenues through syndication as well as support the company’s sports strategies. To run the new venture, the company tapped Peter Hutton to the position of Senior Vice President, FIC Sports. Hutton was previously a partner and director at Broadreach Media, a consultancy firm that advised clients such as FIC, Sportsband Media Group and Willow Cricket.
Labor talks between NBA owners and players once again proved unable to strike an accord after new meetings wrapped up yesterday. NBA Commissioner David Stern told reporters that the league had no announcements to make regarding game cancellations, although ESPN reports that the NBA will announce today that they will postpone training camp and early exhibition games. The regular season is scheduled to open Nov. 1.
Through two weeks of the NFL season, FOX is on pace to set a few ratings records, according to Nielsen Media Research. The NFL ON FOX is averaging a 12.2/25 household rating/share with an average audience of 20.5 million viewers, besting last year’s two-week record setting mark of 11.7/25, 19.6 million by 4% in rating and 5% in audience. New two-week ratings records were also set all key demographics. FOX NFL SUNDAY is averaging a 3.6/9 with 5.6 million viewers, to score as the channel’s top opening two-week rating and audience since 2001.
FOX reports that Sunday’s taped-delayed Barclays Premier League match between Manchester United and Chelsea drew a combined audience of 2,486,000 viewers on the company’s trio of networks airing the game: FOX Sports, FOX Soccer and FOX Deportes. Sunday’s match on FOX posted a 1.0 household rating with 1.6 million viewers, FOX Soccer scored a .4 with 456,000 viewers for the live match and FOX Deportes saw a 4.2 with 430,000 watching the live Spanish-language telecast.
The FCC ruled Thursday that the Madison Square Garden Company must make its MSG and MSG+ high-definition regional sports channels available to Verizon’s FiOS TV service. The decision stems from a July 2009 complaint with the FCC against MSG, claiming that the company refused to sell Verizon the platforms in the greater New York region.
- Big 12 commissioner Dan Beebe has left the troubled conference following a near collapse for the second time in a year. In a statement, the Big 12 said yesterday that its board of directors and Beebe reached a mutual agreement for Beebe’s departure. Former Big Eight commissioner Chuck Neinas will step in on an interim basis.
- With all the media criticism in recent months, the NCAA scored a victory this week, when it won a court battle with Aloha Sports, Inc. in a Hawaii state court regarding an alleged deal to sell the Seattle Bowl in 2003. The case, which began in 2004, alleged antitrust, contract and unfair competition before a jury ruled in favor of the NCAA.
- In another case, the Supreme Court of Ohio ordered Ohio St. to submit documents to the court that are the subject of a lawsuit filed by ESPN in July. ESPN sued OSU for withholding records that the sports network viewed as public documents. The court ordered both parties to file evidence by Oct. 11, with ESPN mandated to file a brief within 10 days after filing evidence while OSU will then have 20 days to respond.
- The Big East is talking with Navy and Air Force about joining the conference as football-only members in an effort to rebuild the conference. Navy Athletic Director Chet Gladchuk told ESPN that there is no timetable for a move.
MLB Network is set to offer 1941: Summer of Legends on Saturday at 5p, and tapped actor and director Edward Burns to narrate the story of how New York Yankees’Joe DiMaggio and the Boston Red Sox’s Ted Williams captivated sports fans as DiMaggio pursued a 56-game hitting streak and Williams sought to hit .400 for the season. The special includes archive interviews with DiMaggio, Williams and former teammates Phil Rizzuto, Tommy Henrich and Bobby Doerr, as well as new clips from Tommy Lasorda, Red Schoendien stand Jerry Coleman.
Wednesday night’s Rays-Yankees game scored as the second-highest-rated Yankees telecast of the year on the YES Network, as well as the channel’s highest-rated Yankees telecast not involving the Red Sox in almost four seasons. The game drew a 7.01 average household rating in the New York DMA, to score an average of 640,000 total viewers. The post-game show did a 3.4 household rating.
American Forces Network is prepping a new sports channel for overseas personnel, launching AFN Sports HD in both Europe and the Pacific this weekend.
Sirius XM Radio is set to debut an expanded weekday lineup on its College Sports Nation channel on Monday. As part of the changes, the channel’s live broadcast day will kick off an hour earlier, starting at 6:00a with 247 Sports Radio’s On Campus and the schedule will now feature anew daily college sports talk show SiriusXM’s College Sports Today, hosted by Eddie George and Mark Packer at 9a.
Sponsorship & Promotion
The NHL is on deck to celebrate the opening of the 2011-12 NHL season as well as the league’s return to Winnipeg with the 2011 Molson Canadian NHL Face-Off festival in Winnipeg on Oct. 6. As part of the festivities, the league will offer fans live musical performances, interactive hockey attractions, and a live broadcast of the opening night game between the Montreal Canadiens and Toronto Maple Leafs from the Air Canada Centre in Toronto. VERSUS, NHL Network and CBC will broadcast portions of the festival.
BP is extending its sponsorship with the U.S. Olympic Committee through the 2016 Games, with the deal estimated to be worth between $12-$15 million. In 2010, nearly a third of the USOC’s $250 million in revenues were generated from sponsorships.
