Good Morning, it’s Friday, September 21, 2007 and this is your first early morning digital briefing. 

MTV is out to get its demographic to do the right thing launching a causes-driven social network dubbed Think MTV.com. Partnering with some powerhouse charities including the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation and the Case Foundation, the site seeks to educate and spur young web surfers to action awarding grants totaling $500,000 to select activists under the age of 25. Members of the “Think Community” can create profiles and try to recruit new friends by sharing content within MTV’s new open platform Flux Network.
 

~ MULTIPLATFORM CONTENT NEWS ~

 
More on the ABC/AOL deal announced yesterday in Cynopsis: ABC’s shows are viewable via a co-branded version of ABC.com’s broadband player on AOL.com, the first time ABC shows or the player have been made available on another portal. Local ABC affiliates will also benefit from the deal, as their logos will appear based on the DMA each user connects from. Stations will receive one interactive local ad spot within each program, as they do on their own sites, with ABC and AOL sharing the revenue from the other three single-sponsor spots.
 
NBC.com will debut a new season of Late Night with Conan O’Brien animated spinoff Pale Force on September 24 and launch its first made-for-broadband original series Coastal Dreams on October 2. The latter, a twenty-something mystery yarn, will run for 24 episodes and take advantage of NBC.com social network myNBC, providing users with text-message updates, phone calls and emails from its characters.
 
Turner‘s comedy broadband site SuperDeluxe.com launched two new original web series. Layers features Nick Kroll (Best Week Ever) as a deal making Hollywood Agent. Maximus Puss Suicidal Cat is an animated short featuring a wisecracking cat driven to multiple suicide attempts.
 
Yahoo! TV is streaming a few full episodes of its own including the premieres of CBS’ The Big Bang Theory and NBC’s Chuck.

The Weather Channel relaunched its Epic Broadband site powered by Brightcove to coincide with the second season of Epic Conditions premiering October 1. The site features original video content of some of the lesser-known adventure sports including slacklining and wingsuit flying.
 
AccuWeather introduced a customizable iGoogle Gadget that provides users with 15 days of weather forecasts as well as current radar readings and conditions. It is the service’s second Google-based widget, joining the Hurricane Watch gadget.
 

~ INNOVATORS & START-UPS ~
 

Even Nielsen is getting into the social networking craze. Hey Nielsen is a new online community launching in beta form on Monday combining social networking with buzz tracking, allowing users to share opinions on TV shows, movies, music and internet sites. A la YouTube or Digg, sites and shows will be numbered based on popularity and rankings.
 
Video and social networking start-up PeopleJam.com announced two new partnerships. More than 500 episodes of programming from Stream4 Media will be available exclusively to PeopleJam members and syndication partners, including offerings from Harvard Health Publications, Top Chef star Andrea Beaman and popular fitness website CrossFit. Additionally life improvement publisher Nightingale-Conant Corporation will provide short form video and audio segments from self improvement gurus including Tony Robbins, Dale Carnegie and Jack Canfield.
 
Online video network Dailymotion has been added to eBay’s list of global approved video hosting services that can now be embedded in members’ sales listings. Dailymotion also announced a new strategic partnership with online video distribution and analytics company TubeMogul, enabling users to track their videos’ visitor statistics on a regional basis. (Dailymotion powers Cynopsis’ daily video podcast).
 

~ TECHNOLOGY DEALS, MERGERS AND SKIRMISHES ~

 
Microsoft added some IPTV and SlingBox functionality to the newest version of its PC-based DVR Media Center. Internet TV offers access to IPTV-based content found on the net such as old movies and cartoons. WebGuide allows users to schedule TV recordings, access music collections and view stored programming remotely from any web browser.
 

~ DIGITAL ADVERTISING ~

 
Sony Pictures Digital Entertainment announced a standalone interactive agency to take on both in house and outside projects. Sony Pictures Imageworks will offer a full range of web and mobile marketing services including online research, customer relationship management, product development and website design and development.
 
Hearst Holdings division White Directory Publishers signed a deal to act as exclusive sales agents for set-top application provider BIAP‘s new Yellow Pages on TV tool. The interactive application enables viewers to access Yellow Pages listings through their digital remotes, taking the viewer to a microsite containing current promotional information. The application is currently being tested in two Time Warner Cable markets and will roll out across the MSO’s entire digital footprint.
 

~ TRENDS, RESEARCH, ETC.  ~

 
Internet ad spending was one of the only bright spots in Nielsen Monitor-Plus‘ ad spending report for the first half of 2007, increasing 23.2% over the same period last year. National Magazines (8.4%), National Sunday Supplements (6.5%), Outdoor (5.1%) and Spot TV Markets 101-210 (3.2%) were the only other categories to show an increase. Overall ad spending declined .5%.
Nielsen announced it would bring electronic Local People Meters (LPMs) to 38 additional markets by 2011, bringing coverage to a total of 56 markets representing 70% of U.S. TV households. LPMs enable passive measurement of TV viewing, mobile video devices, console games, DVRs and VOD.
 

~ EXECUTIVE MOVES ~

 
MSN veteran Cameron Death was picked as NBC Digital Entertainment‘s new VP/Digital Content, reporting directly to Vivi Zigler, EVP/NBC Digital Entertainment. Cameron will oversee digital production and work with NBCU’s ad clients to create ad-funded online programming.
 
Emmanuelle Borde was upped to SVP of Sony’s new standalone marketing firm Imageworks Interactive, managing day-to-day operations and overseeing creative, marketing, production, technology and product development.
 
Legendary shlockmeister Lloyd Kaufman, founder of Troma Entertainment, was elected Chairman of the Independent Film & Television Alliance (IFTA), serving for a two-year term. Lloyd most recently served as IFTA’s General Vice Chairman and continues to chair its New Technologies Opportunities Committee.

Bravo Digital’s Television Without Pity launched TVBigshot.com, a season long fantasy game that allows users to create their own line-ups of shows and awards would-be programming execs with prizes based on how the shows fare in terms of ratings, press and prizes. Each player starts out with a budget of $300 million to set their line-ups, using new and returning series from the five broadcast networks. Grand prize is $100,000 in real moolah, not to mention bragging rights over the rest of the site’s TV addicts.
