09.20.13
Good morning. It’s Friday, September 20, 2013, and this is your first early morning Sports briefing.
A spin of the wheel and NAPA is out. NAPA Auto Parts announced that it is terminating its multimillion-dollar sponsorship of Michael Waltrip Racing at the end of the year, marking another hit for the team that is accused of attempting to manipulate a race to alter the point standings after teammate Clint Boyer spun out. NAPA serves as the primary sponsor of Martin Truex Jr. and is in the first year of a three-year extension the company announced last August estimated to be worth at least $15 million a year.
Floyd Mayweather Jr.’s win over Canelo Alvarez delivered the richest fight of all time, according to Showtime, with at least 2.2 million homes signing on for the PPV. The bout brought in nearly $150 million in the US alone, to rank as the highest-grossing PPV of all time. The current number of buys marks the second most of all-time, behind only Mayweather’s victory over Oscar De La Hoya in 2007, which brought in 2.5 million.
Meanwhile, the boxing event also reportedly gave Mexican local broadcaster Televisa a record rating. Canelo Alvarez’s peeps at Golden Boy Promotions said that nearly eight of out 10 households in Mexico were watching the country’s free-to-air fight, for a national rating of 41.5 and a 77 share of the viewing audience, or 22.1 million viewers. The full telecast, including undercard bouts, delivered a 30.1 rating.
FOX Sports is reporting that the NFL on FOX posted a 12.8/27 household rating/share and 21.9 million viewers for a Week 2 single header schedule with Redskins/Packers as the lead game. That is up 7% over last year’s NFL on FOX single header and marks the second week in a row in which the NFL on FOX has grown over the previous year. So two weeks into the schedule, the NFL on FOX is averaging a 12.8/26 and 21.8 million viewers, to mark the NFL on FOX’s best start ever. FOX NFL Sunday brought in a 3.3/9 average with 5.1 million viewers on Sunday, rising 14% over last year.
Discovery Channel will hit the road with the NFL for a two-part special that will chronicle the Steelers, Vikings, 49ers and Jaguars as they prepare for the NFL International Series in London. The series, NFL in Season, will showcase each team’s week of preparation and kick off with Steelers vs. Vikings on Friday, Oct. 4 at 10p while 49ers vs. Jaguars will air Nov. 1 at 10p.
The UFC is teaming with FOX Sports 1 for UFC Fight for the Troops, a special three-hour event on Wednesday, Nov. 6 at 7p designed to raise funds for the Intrepid Fallen Heroes Fund, supporting men and women serving in the United States Armed Forces. The fights will be attended by thousands of soldiers from Fort Campbell, home to the only Air Assault Division in the world, the 101st Airborne Division. The UFC previously hosted two UFC Fight For The Troop events that helped raise $4 million for the Intrepid Fallen Heroes Fund and The National Intrepid Center of Excellence.
Deportes Telemundo is reeling in former Mexican soccer player Manuel Sol to join the network’s sports division as an expert soccer analyst and contributor for the network’s platforms. Sol was introduced last night on Titulares y Mas.
ESPN’s Baseball Tonight is digging in at the MLB Fan Cave in New York on Tuesday, Sept. 24 at 10p on ESPN2. Karl Ravech hosts with ESPN analysts Barry Larkin and Manny Acta.
FOX Sports 1 locked in a one-hour special, Driven: A Race Without Boundaries, for Sunday at 5p. Tiff Needell hosts with the competition slated to take place at four venues: Utah’s Bonneville Salt Flats, Nevada’s Mint 400 Desert Course, Colorado’s Pikes Peak Hill Climb and Daytona International Speedway
The U.S. Ski and Snowboard Association entered a partnership with Alli Sports, a division of the NBC Sports Group, to make the company’s Dec. 12-15 Dew Tour iON Mountain Championships at Breckenridge, CO as a USSA event. The event will help determine the athletes that will be nominated by the USSA for the U.S. Olympic freeskiing and snowboarding team. The five competitions will be used to nominate the team for halfpipe snowboarding plus the new events of slopestyle skiing and snowboarding along with halfpipe skiing. All of the events will be broadcast on either NBC or NBCSN.
Universal Sports Network announced a distribution agreement with Cox Communications making the channel available to Cox Advanced TV subscribers around the country. In addition, the multi-year deal gives Cox full comprehensive TV Everywhere rights. Cox will roll out Universal Sports Network in HD as part of their new Sports Pak 2 tier over the next several months, and is currently accessible in Cox markets serving Oklahoma, Ohio, Rhode Island, Connecticut, Omaha, Sun Valley and Kansas.
Bo Jackson’s current passion? Bows. Sportsman Channel will bring Bo Jackson on a whitetail deer hunt in Fulton County, Illinois on Relentless Pursuit on Friday, September 20 at 8p. Host Tim Wells guides Bo on a typical fall deer hunt with the episode featuring a recap of their 2012 hunt along with behind-the-scenes footage.
