Next week, Nielsen will announce plans to include viewership of linear programming on smartphones and tablets in its TV ratings, likely to take effect by next fall’s TV season. The measurement company also plans to launch a Twitter-related ratings service on Monday, September 30.
To avoid delaying the Emmy broadcast for NFL play, CBS made the call to pre-empt 60 Minutes on Sunday. A 20-million-strong lead-in can only help the awards telecast, which will compete for eyeballs with the second-to-last ep of AMC‘s buzzy Breaking Bad, and the series finale of Showtime‘s Dexter.
There will be a special guest star on the Emmys: The Academy of Television Arts & Sciences has struck a deal with Samsung Electronics America to feature the company’s 85-inch smart TVs on Sunday’s CBS broadcast. Samsung also purchased six 30-second spots to air during the awards show for its product, a device that would serve both streamers and traditional broadcasters.
You can’t rush farewells – especially when so many people are watching. The final two installments of AMC‘s Breaking Bad will run 75 minutes: “Set your DVRs accordingly,” tweeted co-exec producer Peter Gould. Bad’s last ep drew 6.4 million total viewers, a series record; final shows air Sundays, September 22 and September, at 9p.
NBC is planning a mini-series about the life of late-night icon Johnny Carson. Biopic will be based on the upcoming book, Carson the Magnificent: An Intimate Portrait.
Oscar winner Susan Sarandon will guest star on an ep of Mike & Molly, as a famous novelist. M&M returns to the CBS lineup midseason.
Science Channel movie The Challenger Disaster chronicles one man’s efforts to determine the cause of the tragic 1986 explosion of the Space Shuttle Challenger. “This film is the biggest swing in our network’s history,” said Debbie Myers, Science EVP and GM of the net’s first-ever scripted drama, starring William Hurt. Film premieres Saturday, November 16 at 9p.
Oxygen Media launched an Oxygen Now app for iPads, iPhones and Web browsers at www.OxygenNow.com. Authenticated customers can stream shows the day after they bow on TV; anyone else can view eps 30 days after their premiere. Plans for Android are underway.
The star of Macy’s’ new national TV commercials won’t be Donald Trump or Martha Stewart. It will be an app. Starting Sunday, September 22, the retailer will run ads touting the app’s convenience, including its ability to do price checks and summon coupons.
The quirky world of pearl hunters is explored in Discovery‘s Dixie Divers. The one-hour special, focusing on a “comical” but “fiercely competitive” crew in a remote area of Tennessee, airs Saturday, September 28 at 10p.
Fans get a chance for Facebook time with Lifetime stars when the net launches live chats with talent and creative teams from its shows. The audience engagement effort kicks off Sunday, September 22, with stars from Devious Maids.
BBC America‘s Copper won’t see season three. Series finale for the drama, which suffered from stagnant ratings after a promising start, is Sunday, September 22 at 10p.
The NFL jumps to Discovery Channel for a two-part behind-the-scenes special about the football league’s first-ever regular games played in the U.K. Produced by NFL Films, the doc launches Friday, October 4 at 10p.
Columbia Records will release Glee Sings the Beatles two days before the series season five premiere, the first of a two-part tribute to the Fab Four. Tracks are available for streaming now – a promo for the show, and a pre-order opportunity. Glee returns to Fox Thursday, September 26 at 9p.
Animated comedy The Awesomes will be back for a 10-ep sophomore season on Hulu. Since its August launch, the series, co-created by SNL‘s Seth Meyers, has become one of the streaming service’s top 10 most-watched shows.
CMT has renewed Sweet Home Alabama for season four. The dating show, from Glassman Media, premieres Friday, November 8 at 9p.

Talk about a full house: HGTV and DIY have greenlit six new series for production. On HGTV’s slate are Beat the House (from Ardaban); New House, New Life (Orion); Buying Country (Authentic Ent.); Restoring America (Magnetic Prods.) and House Hunters Off the Grid (Leopard Films). DIY is prepping Stone Age (Radiant Media).
Spike TV has optioned Tut, a scripted six-part series about the Egyptian ruler, from MUSE Entertainment.
ABC has acquired Trust, a soap based on the highly-rated Columbian telenovela Pura Sangre, and produced by Eva Longoria‘s UnbeliEVAble Entertainment. Given the ratings victories Univision has notched for its telenovelas, it’s no surprise there’s interest in adapting the format.
Cynthia Nixon (Sex and the City), Amy Sedaris (Strangers with Candy), Wanda Sykes (Curb Your Enthusiasm) and Julie White (Go On) will make guest appearances on Amazon Studios‘ Alpha House. The comedy about four Senators, starring John Goodman, will run on Prime Instant Video later in 2013.
Adam Pally joins Fox‘s The Mindy Project as a series regular. The Happy Endings alum will play a new ob-gyn on the sitcom, airing Tuesdays at 9p.
Starz has put out a casting call for company-level ballet dancers for a new series in development about the underbelly of the dance world. Bunheads can contact www.telseyandco.com/starzballetproject.
Electus International has sold six programs to AXN Black, a new channel from Sony Pictures Television Networks launching next month, for Central Europe. Shows include Dog and Beth: On the Hunt, airing Stateside on CMT, and The Hero, airing on TNT.
The Chinese government and Japanese studio Genco are collaborating for a TV series based on Sun Tzu‘s The Art of War. The show will be shot in China in English, for international distribution.
The Voice UK filled its empty coach slot. Ricky Wilson (The Kaiser Chiefs) will join fellow newcomer Kylie Minogue and returning will.i.am and Tom Jones for the BBC One singing competition’s third season, premiering in January 2014.

CBS‘s The Talk drew its largest-yet weekly audience for its September 9-13 season four premiere. An average 2.8 million total viewers, per Nielsen’s Live + Same Day report, tuned in, within striking distance of ABC rival The View, which drew 3.01 million viewers. Both shows averaged a 1.2 rating/8 share in the W25-54 demo.
The 27th season premiere of CBS‘s Survivor dropped 19 percent from its year-ago premiere, an all-time fall debut low. But with a 2.6 rating/8 share in A18-49 and 9.5 million viewers, it was still the highest-rated show of the night.
Reality finales duked it out Wednesday night, with CBS‘s Big Brother and NBC’s America’s Got Talent both averaging a 2.5 rating/7share in the A18-49 demo. In total viewers Talent came out on top, drawing 6.9/11 to Brother’s 4.1/7.
ABC‘s Jimmy Kimmel Live continues its hot streak, posting its best non-NBA week ratings this summer the week of September 9 – the late-nighter jumped 50 percent in A18-49 versus a year ago (to 815,000 from 543,000). On Monday, Kimmel’s revelation that he was behind the twerk video prank made JKL the most social broadcast late-night series, with 10,451 tweets.
